Negan's Bat Lucille (First Prop Replica Attempt)

So I am beginning my journey into the prop replica building world. I am nervous but also very excited. So I am assuming what I am about to do will be a nice easy first try however I am also very much aware that things will undoubtedly get hard as soon as I actually start. I plan on chronicling each step of this build and I am looking for as much guidance from the community as I can because I am certainly gonna need it. I am making this replica for my cousin who plans on cosplaying as Negan for a Walking Dead premiere party on October 23rd so I have some time. I have ordered the most important part and that is the Bat.

As you can see I am really starting from scratch and I am looking forward to that being part of the process. So the first questions I have for the community are...

What gauge barbed wire should I use? I am thinking of going with this http://www.ebay.com/itm/20-FEET-ROL...508442?hash=item2804a3631a:g:aREAAOSwGWNUXQvT

What color stain/paint matches closest to screen version Lucille? Unfortunately the only screen shots I can get are from at night. We have not seen Lucille during the day or in better light yet. I am looking for the closest color match I can get.

Edit: The color I used was Minwax Polyshades American Chestnut.

The bat is a 34 inch bat Rock Maple. The link is above. It is a perfect match. Barbed wire link above. That is all! This was a lot of fun.

Lucille is finished! A little blood, a lot of sweat, gladly no tears. Overall I am really happy with this considering it was my first build. I am very proud and excited about how it turned out.

I actually just completed mine last week, must be popular?? I used 3/4" fence staples from Home Depot that I predrilled the holes for. This way nothing split, the staples didn't bend, it was perfect!

Beautiful! I drilled pilot hole too. No real other way to do it. You will crack the wood, split the wood, or ben the staples. Also the wood is so hard even if you tried to nail them in you would spend about 10 minutes on each nail.

Awesome job by the way. I love the way yours came out! Is that actual barbed wire? If it’s real barbed wire you worked it really well. I didn’t anticipate how hard it was to work the barbed wire.

I’m glad you could work off of what I did. It looks like you exceeded mine and made a really great version of your own.

I appreciate the kind words! Yes it's actually barbed wire! The method I used, now looking back on it, was rather dangerous? I clamped 10' at a time of the barbed wire (my clamping surface left a lot to be desired and a few times I nearly sent the entire roll of barbed wire flying at my face...) and rolled it along the bat, drilling and stapling along the way. My only regret was not using a little bit more barbed wire, but I'm sure I'll make another one sometime! Again, thanks for the compliments and beautiful write up!

Awesome! Yea I used a very similar method and I had someone helping me. They turned I wrapped, drilled, and nailed the fencing staples in. I cut the hell out of my arms and hands. I didn’t safely approach applying the barbed wire either. If I do another one I am more likely to use proper hand protection and figure out how to clamp down the wire without it springing all over the place. I also want to figure out how make a mold of the bat and cast it in foam rubber or plastic so I can either sell them to be con safe replicas. Because all of the ones people make “safe for cons” there is a lot of hard work put into them but they look sad. And obviously it’s not ok to bring a real barbed wire bat to a con.

That looks great!! Matter of fact, yours looks nearly perfect. Just checked out 2 of the "stunt" bats! The barbed wire looked so real, I couldn't keep from being "gentle" with 'em! I kept thinking I was gonna get gashed!! And your display is awesome!! I am envious!
