Hello Everyone,
New to painting props here, but I received Resin duplicates from a Basilisk Fang used in Harry Potter TCOS, and a duplicate hermione Noble Wand.

The replicas are cast in white derlin? I think..
Heres the video.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c86Fm0bYO84&feature=channel

Now my question is, how could I paint them (what paints and techniques and such) and what to use.

Here is the link to the Hermione wand. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SknvjKKl6o&feature=channel

And another to the Basilisk fang.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3_HH1hr_PY&feature=channel

Thanks a lot everyone!!!

I don't think it's delrin, that's not a resin and doesn't sound like the fangs did in the video. I'm guessing it might be something like Smoothcast 300 urethane resin from Smooth-on (it's a dead on match for color and for the sound when you tap a casting on the table), if you've cleaned the mold release off of it then you can prime and paint it with almost anything you could use for auto body work over body filler, so almost any primer you would use on a car should work for a first layer, then build up your color coats over that.

(it might not be Smoothcast 300, but it's a nice resin to use for something like that since it's strong, easy to use, and hardens fully in just minutes - if I was making them I'd probably use it for a first try at least)

Thanks.. Now the fangs are easy, the wand is what I'm worried about. I'm going to go for a cream colored paint to go for the weathering on that aged fang. Thanks

Hi, the white wands are cast in a poly style resin, In another video I show a delrin or delron wand I made but I actually made it in a lathe and not cast as delrin is very hard and impossible to carve with a knife. Delrin is used to make bushings in cars and stuff so its tough.

The fang I cast in the same resin as the wands and sounds a bit different due to the mass since its so thick the harmonics change a bit and the wands sound more like plastic.

The original fang I have was cast in something different that leaves it more rubbery feel to it the prop department made that one for the basilisk model in the movie.

Cool to see my videos posted on here (haha) Im famous!! sorta... well not really but still cool.

I always use self-etching primer first so that the paint has something to bite on to.

Funky Jedi your avatar is crazy funny!!
I personally have not painted any of the fangs but I have sprayed a few wands with a stove paint and it seemed to work and stay on but then again I dont know much about painting. the self etching does sound like the way to go.

I always recommend a scrub down in Dawn dish soap and warm/hot water for all resin parts, followed by a clean fresh water rinse... The reason I specify Dawn by name is that it's a very aggressive dish soap (much more so than most generics) and will strip the heck out of and wax or oil contaminant on the resins surface...

As for how to paint, well there are 1001 different techniques and 1001 different ways to go about it depending on what works for you and your skill level...
