NECA Releasing Prop Portal Gun

I'm not understanding your grip with the switch setup?
Set it to one colour... fire a portal... Set it to the other colour, fire the other portal.
Seems fine to me!

What should be solid but isn't?

It should be two buttons and an on/off switch. One button fires orange and plays a sound, the other fires blue and plays a sound. The current set up is not only unlike how it is playing the game, but it would be impractical for real-world portal-ing.

Looks like the blue stripe version is coming out along with a few new goodies. My favorite is the stand for the portal gun actually. Looks pretty cool and that it may work with fan build guns:

As seen on bigbadtoystore.com for $50

Now that I may have to pick up!

I don't see how it would be impractical IRL - Or how massive a difference it makes!
It's not exactly the same as having left-mouse / right-mouse, but it's a split second to change from one colour to the other... It's not like you can fire two portals simulaneously anyway, is it?

I just ordered my Atlas gun today. ;u;
I've only been able to find a couple stores that still have it in stock. One totaled up to $180 with shipping, and one totaled up to $151 with shipping. oAo

If I weren't now quite broke, I'd get the stand, as well. But, I really need to save my remaining money to go towards the functional long-fall boots I've been working on for PAX. >u>;;
(The only bummer is that Atlas is technically the male while P-body is the female, I just totally missed my chance with P-body's gun or the original gun. Ah... But I suppose a little genderbending wouldn't hurt anyone, right? ;; )

Yea, if I wasn't getting screwed at work, I'd be all over the atlas version and the stand. Figure I could get the stand sooner though

Okay, lets put it this way. Imagine you are playing the game, let's say for PC -

As is, the left mouse is the blue portal, right mouse is the orange portal. This is a streamlined way of playing. You always know a left click is blue and a right click is orange, and because of this you can glide through the levels with ease. You can, in mid air, shoot one portal at a wall then another portal below you before hitting the pavement.

Now imagine if they changed the right mouse button to the "pick up" command, and made the left mouse a general fire button. To pick your portal color, you have to use the scroll on your mouse. You scroll up for blue, scroll down for orange. Now it is the same scenario, you are falling, you need to place two portals before you hit the ground. Only now, you have to scroll up or down on your mouse to change the color, and you have to keep track of what color you are set on, on top of what color you need to switch to next. Nobody would want to play like this. It would be tedious, and in 20 years we'd be seeing an episode of AVGN about Portal with the Nerd asking "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!?".

I am sure they did it to save money, fair enough, but check out the Portal Gun light and sound kit from Crix; that's how it should be. I don't have the Crix kit, though mine is the same principle, and the in-hand function feels as smooth as it does in the game. It's as simple as moving your thumb from one portal button to the other, just as simple as moving your index finger from left mouse to right mouse.

If you really wanted to, I don't think it would be too difficult to modify. Take some very fine wet sand paper to the blue stripe and eventually it will come off and leave just the white. You can reapply the Aperture decal after that. Assuming my pre-order is legit, that's my plan. Changing the light might take a little more work, but probably not a huge deal either. You're an RPFer, you can do it!

Wow, and here I thoguht my idea on its funtionality was simple!

What I meant was rather then make people use two buttons at once for the effect, you have an on/off switch AND a trigger.
All you should have to do is pull the trigger and it switches between the two options of lights and activates the sound.

Its a simple thing that even dollar store items do, and I'm shocked they were cheap on this simple addition that would've improved the product.

I have to admit however, that ThrowingChickens comment on the "On/Off and two button" setup is better for real life effect.

Dagnie:

I thought of them more like a comedy duo then guy and girl; sort of like the old black and white characters Abbott and Costello.

I agree with TC on recoloring it: I plan to make mine Glow in the dark!

I'm leery on taking it apart to change the light color though; I'd like to see pics of someone else do it first. ;)

Oh, I'd mess it up terribly. I'm very much so a beginner in prop making. ;u;
Besides, while it'd be mega awesome to have an "original" portal gun, it seems like everyone is making one anyways. It's a bit more rare to see P-Body or Atlas's gun, so to see them is actually a bit.... refreshing. c:

@TheAtomicSoul:
They completely are, but at the same time they were designed to have genders - P-body being the female, and Atlas the male. C:
Luckily it's nothing romantic, because I personally enjoy their wacky interactions. LOL~
Also, a glow in the dark Portal gun sounds sweet! I'll have to keep an eye out to see if you make a thread doing it, because I'd love to see photos of that~!

I managed to snag two of the p-Body guns from a couple of Newburyport Comics stores. I was gonna put one up on eBay, but I'd be willing to trade one for an Atlas gun if anyone's interested.

I'd love to get one of the originals, but I just can't justify the $400-$500 they're going for on eBay.:cry

So apparently now NECA is releasing a "customizable" gun that allows you to have all three guns in one.
Price on ToyWiz? $95 or so.

Not seeing anything about it being limited edition, just about it having limited pre-orders.

NECA is dragging this out a bit in my opinion. But that could be just me.

Opinions??

I saw that and was going to post something up on it actually. Mentions that preorders would ship in November, yet oddly no news from it anywhere with Neca, surprised there was not even a rumor on it. I have to wonder if quality went down as the price is cheaper and how it may differ with the "limited" versions.

I'm honestly a bit bothered personally that I didn't expect such a thing, since having all three guns would be quite nice, but considering the stripes are raised because they're magnetic, I'm also a bit glad I have the stripes painted on instead of stuck on.

It is odd that NECA hasn't mentioned it, I agree. I wonder how many other sites it's on and if it is limited edition or not.

It looks like its on bigbadtoystore now so it seems like this will be pretty easily acquired.

I hope so. I'd be really excited to get this one, as I wanted one of the originals, but now the only way I can get one of those is through Ebay, and I don't feel like paying $500+

I'm just a little suspicious of the lower price though. I hope it's just as good of quality as the others. If so, I'm in.

It's not limited, either.

As cool as the concept is, NECA has ****ed over the people who bought any of the first 3 guns.
