Nifty little prop that would go well with my meerschaum (sp?) pipe.

As for tinting glass, you could do what we do in model making. Take some food color and mix it in to future floor wax. Because future is a crystal clear acrylic, it has no negative effects on the optical quality of the glass. Plus, you can dip the lass as many times as you need to darken the tint. And if you're not completely happy, soak it in windex for 20 minutes, rinse off and start again.

Cool info! Thanks!

Come to think of it, where IS RelicMaker anyway? I would have thought he'd be all over this. :lol He does some great stuff!

Does anyone know if there are cheaper alternatives to the glasses? I'd love to make a pair of these, but $60 for 2 pairs of glasses (especially shelf sitters) is a bit much.

Not sure about the glasses- I "think" Townsend has them made themselves. I've never seen them available anywhere else.

Ok, I got mine today... boy was that fast!

Me too! These guys are really on the ball! They were in the mailbox when we left for the madness that is the monthly grocery run. :lol

Have you tried swapping your earpieces yet? I was thinking about it when we got home, but I'm drained from the grocery run, and all those little, near microscopic screws are looking pretty intimidating right now.:wacko

I was surprised how little everything is! I guess I was subconsiously expecting something more "goggle-like".

The only minor bummer is that they sent me silver loupes instead of the gold, but after watching the movie the other night, the real ones look like faded tarnished brass all over anyway, so no problem there, just break out the Rub n' Buff. :thumbsup

Re: National Treasure- Ocular Device/ 3D Glasses

Not much. I'm thinking about $7 per lens.

Wow, that IS a good price! :thumbsup I was thinking "professionally made", "Optical grade" and got the shivers wondering what the price would be. :lol

They really are on the ball, no doubt about that.

I did not trade out the earpieces yet for pretty much the same reason. I did pull out the loops and clipped them on just to look at it all together. Looks great.

So how exactly are we going to drill into these to put in the loop assembly? The reason why I ask is that the screws for the glasses seem to be centered, which gives us very little room for making a hole. Any thoughts?

I think the best bet is to drill on the inside of the screw closest to the lense, that seems to have the most room... not positive. I am going back to the pics now to see if I can figure out what they did for the film.

-Bryan

Never mind... looks like the replica picture has them towards the inside like I described. I think that is the better route.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking earlier. I got my 2nd wind a couple hours ago and started fiddling with them.

First hitch with the earpieces- They don't swap as easily as I'd hoped. You can swap them, "but" you'll need to dremel off some of the earpiece at the hinge, so it will open all the way. No biggie got one done and the 2nd one mostly there. :)

Second hitch with the earpieces- They're going to need some tiny little washers put in the hinge so they're snug. They go right together, but they're way loose. I have no idea where to get washers that small, so I think I'll hit up the optician at WalMart or Meijer to put some in for me next time I go to town. :lol

Jumping back to drilling the hole for the loupe shaft in the main frame- Heh, I'm going to have to go to a hobby shop and get a smaller bit. The smallest one I've got on hand is still twice as thick as it needs to be.:$

Can anyone who actually has the glasses post close-up pics of the areas where work needs to be done (i.e. where the hole needs to be drilled or where the eyepieces get swapped out)?

I figure if more people can see them, more people might be able to come up with a solution.

-Fred

i think the best way to drill the holes is with a hand drill not power. you can get a small set from a welding supply with the holder and about 10 drills for cleaning a torch tip. start small then work up to the correct size .
if you use a power drill and the bit gets stuck you will bend the glasses beyond use.
i know about drilling in small stuff, believe me. :rolleyes.
john :cool

here is another tip from Reaper :lol

Don't those little glasses repair kits come with rubber washers to snugify glasses?

I'm thinking of maybe picking up one of those next time I go out, but with my luck, the included washer will probably be "just" too thick or something. :lol Also, I noticed last night that I'm having trouble getting my eyes to focus that small anymore- I'm going to have to get myself one of those swing arm flourescent magnifiers one of these days. :confused

Bryan- I don't have access to a camera till my wife figures out how to use hers or Sector7G comes by w/ his Mavica. Can you take some shots of your parts?
