Re: Sith Acolyte (SWTOR) and Darth Nihilus Masks

Chest plate finally done. Lots of mistakes and trial and error making this, but it is finally done!

Initially, built the model out of foam, then progressed through two casts in resin to get the master to this form. Anyway, full production notes are now posted on my website, What's New | MYNOCK'S DEN

Will post progress on other parts as they are made.

Re: Sith Acolyte (SWTOR) and Darth Nihilus Masks

Hi, I just want to say WOW those masks look amazing. Im new and first time making costumes. But a tip I picked up doing plastic models, is for your white and red mask, I think it will always be easier just to use masking tape (painter's tape) and spray it. It comes out even, with a more "pro" and smooth finish. Lines will always be straight. Best part, you can also buy flat/gloss/pearl/etc sprays, to protect the paint and finish it with any look you want. Cheers.

Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, I have tried the spray method, and have used it before on other projects. But on these masks I find I like the hand painted look better for both the Acolyte and Revan masks. Somehow, I think the characters would have added their own "war paint" onto their masks in the field between battles, which would result in a more raw and therefore sloppy look. For the smooth look, a trick I use on my revan masks (though you can't really tell from the photos) is after I paint the red on, I use steel wood to smooth it down. Then, I add a slightly brighter shade of red here and there, and once again use steel wool to smooth it. Finally, I use darker red to paint the damaged areas, once again giving it a rub with steel wool, allowing some of the cold cast aluminum to come through. This gives the red paint a really old, beat up look that you can't get with paint.

Re: Sith Acolyte (SWTOR) and Darth Nihilus Masks

Sith Acolyte thumb armour completed. Initially drawn on paper, traced onto an ABS sheet, cut out and folded to the correct shape, and finally cast in resin.

Working on the fingers now. I have them cast in resin, but I think I will vacuum form them instead to decrease weight and bulk.

Here are some photos of the thumbs. These are cold cast in ONYX using aluminum power.

Re: Sith Acolyte (SWTOR) and Darth Nihilus Masks

I am in awe , master Minock...for a drunken one you do amazing craft my friend!!!
I just started to play with foam and pepakura....it still looks impressing for me and I am not sure I will be able to create what I have in my mind.....But I ll give it my best !!

On another note.....I am doing a full Acolyte cosplay too and I have the pep for it but I would tottaly order your mask V4 to add to the costume, it s absolutely perfectly similar than the one in the Hope movie!!!
If you dont have time to paint it, no worries, I can tottaly do it well, I suck at many crafty things but 3D and painting , I can do well as well as for leather crafting.

I know you aare on your projects and still a lot to do with the legs and costume itself, but could you let me know in PM if it could be possible to have a cast of this epic and superb mask please?
I need one , also for the collectible part since it s so good looking!!

I can paypal u the moment we agree for one, unfinished or finished, I ll take the less time consuming for you.

Thanks

Y

Re: Sith Acolyte (SWTOR) and Darth Nihilus Masks

I am really considering this. Will you be offering a complete set at any point?

Re: Sith Acolyte (SWTOR) and Darth Nihilus Masks

I would also be interested in seeing a complete set.

Re: Sith Acolyte (SWTOR) and Darth Nihilus Masks

Hand armour fully done!

Hand plate was modified a bit from my first prototype to be more accurate; claws are now accurate shape as well, and are thinner and more flexible to prevent injury (seriously, my initial claws were deadly!). Also, now cold cast in aluminum as opposed to being painted.

Thumb armour cold cast in aluminum as well, while the finger/knuckle pieces are vacuum formed from .04 gauge ABS plastic and painted to match the rest.

Both hand and thumb plates are strapped to the hand using two elastic straps each, while the finger pieces are glued onto the glove using hot glue.

Lightsaber in the photos is by Jedi Master of the store Holocron on Etsy.com, modified with Makoto Tsai's V3 Super Plus red LED string blade and electronics. You need sunglasses for this thing!

I anticipate this project will take some time to complete yet, but I will be able to offer the full set once it's done. In the meantime, I can offer each piece I make separately to those that are interested.

Re: Sith Acolyte (SWTOR) and Darth Nihilus Masks

Top half forearm armour master prototype nearly completed. I should be able to cast this week once my new shipment of silicone comes in. This will be cast in two pieces: the main forearm, and the little rocket/bullet assembly. Funny story: I was actually thinking "what should I use to make the little bullet thingy?", when it dawned on me "duh! the answer is in the question!" So I raided my SKS ammo crate and used a live 7.62x39 round to make it! lol.

There are also two little cables that come out of the front of the rocket in the reference material, which i will do post casting, using 16 gauge wires wrapped in heat shrink tubing.

Re: Sith Acolyte (SWTOR) and Darth Nihilus Masks

Once again, instead of cross posting a ton of data, all production notes on my website What's New | MYNOCK'S DEN

Elbows done. Initially thought about vacuum forming them, but decided to cast to retain sharpness of center ridge.

img_5298_med.jpeg

Dorsal forearm done. Cold cast (like everything else in this build), with the little bullet assembly being cast as a separate piece. This piece took me forever to build, and now that it's done, I don't like it because it's not sharp enough. I will rebuild it from scratch using slightly different methods; in the mean time however, this is the forearm.

img_5306_med-2.jpeg

Chest plate shortened from the bottom a bit, weathered to an even darker colour.

img_5304_med-2.jpeg

Overall, the build is proceeding nicely. I'm away for work next week, so the build will resume after I get back.
