Mylar. (where do you get the stuff?)

Ok you know that stuff that's real shiny, and reflective, like a mirror, and you can cut it out, peel the backing off, and stick it on stuff? It is called Mylar, right?

Here's the real question WHERE DO YOU GET IT?! I've been looking every were. Art shops, hobby stores, Meijer, Wal*mart, lowes, home depot etc. Every where I go, I say "Hi, do you carry Mylar?" And they answer is ALWAYS a very clear "NO!" But, I know this stuff is out there, and there has to be some place locally I can buy some. Right?

Any help would be great. Thanks
Jason

Re: Mylar

I can't think of the name brand off hand right now, but most non-chain hobby shops that deal with r/c model planes should carry both the type of heat/shrink mylar linked in the previous message, AND 6"x24" sheets of self adhesive mylar.

EDIT: The product name is Monocote. I haven't used the type that requires heat, but the self adhesive strips are great. I've "chromed" saber bodies and Obi pommels, and used it for the strip on Graflex clamps.

Re: Mylar

What's the purpose of this? Calling it MYLAR is a little vague.

When I hear mylar, I think of the archival clear plastic used for documents, comic books, etc. that protects them for YEARS

Re: Mylar

Thanks for the info gang. I am looking for this, for a number of projects, but right now, I need it for a droid, and a few lightsabers.

Sorry if my title for this thread isn't spasiffic enough, but I wanted to premote free discution, about what it is, how it's used, etc, and not just where to get it. Plus, I wanted to make sure I had the right name, because in photo school (way back when) that's what we always called it, but like I mentioned before, no-one in the stores these days, seem to know what it is.

I'll check the high, end model car/plain shops then, I actually know a few of those.

Re: Mylar

REL was using it on a build up of the Naboo Royal Starship. It looked like simple peel and stick. I'd like to find some too, for model cars and other such things.

EDIT: I was wrong, it was heat applied. See Here.

Re: Mylar

You can get the mirrored mylar at most sign supply companies. "High Gloss Intermediate Metallic Vinyl" is the name Oracal (1 mfger) uses for theirs.
