My very first Van Halen Frankenstrat project - WIP

It's been many, many years since I first toyed with the idea of building a Frankie replica (or something that looks like a Frankie, for that matter). Why now? Well, I got accepted at Law School and will be starting in August. I'll be SO damn busy that I had to start this right away or wait 4 years to do it!!! So I finally took the plunge.

Although I would have loved to make a 100% die hard replica, I had to cut some corners here and there due to lack of funds. I got an alder body from ebay to start with. I'll be fitting my guitar with the following:

Gotoh Floyd
OFR would have been great, but I decided to go with Gotoh for mainly 2 reasons:
1. These suckers are very, very well made and work awesome!
2. Sadly, some of the new OFR are lacking a bit on the quality department. Money was not an object here, it was just a matter of taste.

EVH humbucker
After thinking over and over and over and over again I decided to go with the EVH Frankenstrat pickup. I was between the EVH, SD custom custom, and a SD '78. The more info I read on them the more confused I got. I read so many contradictory things that I got to a point where I was totally lost, so I decided to go with my gut and went with the EVH. I still haven't got it, but a got a nice deal with free shipping on ebay so I went for it.
EDIT: I just received the humbucker! Nice! I was thinking about relicing, but it looks so pretty! LOL!
I also ordered a pickup base and some black and white cable from Stewmac which, by the way, it has just arrived!

Gotoh tunners
This was due to a budget cut. I wish I could go with Schallers, but these Gotoh's are pretty good and get the job done. I'll sand them a bit to get rid of the brand new finish. Had to replace the posts because they were to big and might have cracked the pickup wall.

Neck
I got one of those Mighty Mite's Fender licensed MM2928 maple Strat neck with jumbo frets. It has a skunk stripe but what the hell. Gets the job done. Might not be as accurate but it was a nice fit. I'd like to sand it a bit and weather it. Still not sure how to accomplish that, so I'm looking for some more info on that.

Pickguard/Pot/Knob
I decided to go with Divebomb on this one. They look dead on and saved me the hassle of getting all those separate parts. Besides, it's ready to go. I still haven't got it, but I've heard many good things about it.

I also like to add that I am no wood worker and I've NEVER used a router in my life, so I got one of those Dremel Router attachments, read as much as I could on the web and prayed for the best. I think I pulled it through, tho. Only two finger cuts! :)

Now my guitar, just like Steve Vai's will have some of my DNA in it. :lol

Thanks for the idea Sc0rch!

I messed a bit in some of the taping, specially the ripped section on the front bottom. It should have been a little more angled to the bottom.

019.jpg

Ready for some white. I applied one ultra light black and 2 white dustcoats. After that I went with 4 or 5 thin coats until white was achieved.

020.jpg

021.jpg

Peeling the tape off. In some threads I read to wait a day, in others to wait an hour. I waited about 7 minutes after the last coat and everything came out pretty good.

022.jpg

023.jpg

Relicing and weathering
I went with some dremel, X-acto, sanding and dry brushing technique to achieve a little dirt on some white spots, specially on the bottom of the guitar. Doesn't look like much now but if my calculations are correct, once the red is applied it'll look much better. For the tuners scuffed them with sanding paper. I believe it was 220 grit.

Well, that's it for know. I've already shoot 2 light coats and one medium coat of clear on the guitar, to prevent the pinkish color. I also began the process of taping for the red. I'll be posting pics soon. So far I've only applied the thick ones.

Your tips, constructive criticism and suggestions are welcome! :)

Re: My very first Frankenstrat project - WIP

Wow, not even a: "Dude, that sucks" post?

Meh.

Doesn't matter. Update!

Weather has been awful lately, so I haven't been able to work much on the guitar. I did some taping on Thursday and Friday night. On Saturday I had the chance to finally start spraying red. After some thought I decided to get one of divebomb's body and if possible, sell this one. In the meantime, I'll be putting it together and play a bit, then move the parts to the new one, when the time comes.

I still need to do some 0000 sanding, make more dings, nicks, scratches, weathering, quarter drilling and relic'ing the neck. Now that I've figured out some things, for the next build I'll be using a different approach on the black and white.

Re: My very first Frankenstrat project - WIP

I'm still waiting on the pickguard, so I'm kinda stuck, so I decided to give the graphite powder a test drive on the neck. I got it at Home Depot for 2.50. Since I am not sure whether to sand off the finish (Puerto Rico is awfully humid all year long), I'll probably stick with graphite for a while. Please don't mind the nut. Still haven't installed the locking nut, yet :)

I'm waiting on a magnet to raise the phenolic pup, so it's there for position only. Would someone be so king and share son tips on how to rig the black and white cables? I'm not sure if both black and white should be soldered, or two whites, and if there's a "specific" way to tangle them. I got some thicker cables lying around. Should I use both the pup and the thicker ones?

Here are some progress shots:

build002.jpg

build003.jpg

A little weathering on the eye hooks.

build004.jpg

Graphite powder. I applied some on the neck and tried using a brush, but it didn't work. I rubbed it with my fingers and removed some of the excess with a damp cloth.

build006.jpg

I tried not use the flash, as it washes the details. The photos don't catch too much, but it actually looks a little bit darker. I didn't want to go too crazy on it.

Some relic'ing on the selector. I went a little overboard, but I don't mind :) What I DO mind is that I lost the little spring :(

Re: My very first Frankenstrat project - WIP

I don't know crap about guitars, but I do know what looks cool, and man... that looks cool :)

I really dig the paint job. I always like seeing the masked off vs finished pics so you can see what the artist had in mind when they started. I imagine cutting out the masking tape with that exacto knife had to be OH SO MUCH fun :lol

Looking good man!

Re: My very first Frankenstrat project - WIP

Hey Chris!

How ya doin' brother? Thanks for the feedback!

:lol I know! It took me about 4 hours to get the tape right for the Black and White version alone!!! Thing is, Eddie probably just slapped the tape in about 10 minutes :lol

Woah! Didn't expect to see a guitar here :lol ! I had to double check and make sure I wasn't on the guitar forum I belong to!

Normally, I don't have very nice things to say about relic'ing - but the fact that you didn't sacrifice an existing guitar gets kudos! :thumbsup

Nice work! And considering what the Custom Shop versions cost, you saved almost enough to put yourself through school :lol

Two questions: how does she play, and what in blazes is that contraption in back of the guitar in the "Neck and tremolo set" pic? It looks like some kind of jet pack... :eek

Hehehe, thanks a lot!!!

Actually, the money I am saving, will be going straight to law school! I'm starting in August. Maybe I can skip one year and get the Fender custom! Second thought, my wife will definitely, absolutely kill me :lol

Regarding sound, at the moment I haven't tried it, yet. The initial set up was made by a guitar tech I trust with my eyes closed. He mounted the trem at the right distance, so I won't have problems with intonation, but I didn't have the pickup at the time, so I couldn't give it a test ride. The pickup is the EVH Humbucker, and if my calculations are right, it'll have a 1984 vibe on it, hopefully. That's the tone I am looking for :) I might not even try it at all! I have a friend interested in buying it, so I already got another body. I went with Divebomb's this time Divebomb, Inc. Hopefully the new body will be getting here soon! Once I start law school, I won't be able to touch this project for 4 years!

And, that on the back of the pic is my Ghostbusters Proton Pack.

Although I don't hang out that much in the movie props area (I'm mostly in the OT), I've done a little bit of prop building every now and then, mostly like 8 years ago. I kinda drift away, but about a year ago I started working on the pack for Halloween.

Here's the Proton Pack build up link: http://www.therpf.com/f9/wip-proton-pack-wand-tutorials-tips-weathering-update-10-17-a-63180/

Ghostbusters stunt trap and holster built from scratch: http://www.therpf.com/f9/building-stunt-trap-trap-holder-wip-update-9-13-09-a-69729/

Low budget belt gizmo, which I finished but never updated the thread http://www.therpf.com/f9/wip-my-low-budget-ghostbusters-gizmo-holster-70686/

Ecto goggles: http://www.therpf.com/f9/my-gb_dan-ecto-goggles-build-up-thread-tutorial-72281/

Although not much, I did a little bit more working tonight. :) I messed a little with the pup wires and worked with the 1971 coin. I added some black wash to the cables as well.

Looking good so far!!

Great progress pics showing all the hard work you put into her!!

Very nice!!!! Love your work so far!

I like your approach to weathering, especially dirtying up the neck. I've always done my necks by working on my car a little then actually playing the guitar, to get my real finger wear patterns on there. But the graphite powder looks good and fast to make it happen!!

Here are my EVH replica guitar build threads, have done (documented) two so far...
my favs are the 5150 guitars so I stick with those.

btw I have the EVH Frankie pickup in my 5150's... very very high output pup. Also very midrangey, compared to the Schaller pups that came in the 80s Kramers. I kept my Schaller and may go back to using it eventually. The EVH does give that crunchy raw sound of the early VH records, no doubt. But it's almost over the top in usability... another option might be to wire in a resistor to the volume pot to give it more range.
Just a thought. See what you think once you play yours. :)

Hey I think I know you! LOL

-Mrbond5150
Yes you do! :lol Had no idea you were at the RPF! Awesome!

@Stormy: Well, I only wish I could play like him! I play some bits and pieces here and there, still trying to nail Panama, but gotta keep practicing those scales!!! Thing is when I started playing I never took lessons, so went the rhythm guitar path and didn't pay much attention to lead guitar. Then the acoustic boom came during the 90's and I began playing acoustic guitar jams for Jack Daniels on pubs. I didn't get to much into solos. Now I'm back to basics and getting that pentatonic and blues scales played correctly and practicing with a metronome. But someday, I'll nail Eruption! Having problems at some part from the beginning, but I believe it's mostly because my fingers haven't build muscle memory, and they they aren't that fast, yet. :lol

Brendan: First of all, your guitar kick serious ass!!! It looks fantastic! Awesome attention to detail and love how pristine it looks! I'd also like to build a 5150, but I just can't find a way to justify it to my wifey! :lol

I was really in between the EVH and a SD custom custom. I kept reading and reading, and hearing so much different stuff that I got REALLY confused :lol I read that you could get a similar 1984 tone with it so I bit the bullet. Hey, thanks for the resistor idea! That might really do the trick! The guitar is at the guitar tech right now having the neck route done and the final setup. I just can't wait to play it and pull those harmonics squeals!

BTW, I will be starting another build maybe this weekend. I got a Divebomb body on the way! :) I'll be playing this one for much as I could, tho! And thanks for the props on the neck! I didn't feel like removing the finish, so I went with a quick workaround. If I ever get a Musikraft neck, I'll get it unfinished and use gun stock oil.

I only have a Marshall MG250. Wish I could have an amp head, tho... but I got at a nice price. Even tho, I could get a 5150 and suck anyways! :lol

I really, really appreciate your posts a lot! This thread felt a bit lonely! Hehehe

Thanks!!! :D

Sorry for the late reply, I got drifted by your KITT conversion!!! DAMN! Now THAT looks awesome!

I likes. The only thing I can see is weathering the exposed wood to smooth it out when you are done. Loving this buildup.
