My very first Sculpt..Ever!! Finally an Update on page 10

Well, I'd have to say a couple of the Members on this board and another really peaked
My interest when it comes to Sculpting.. Their Talent is without words and
I can only wish to be as good.. This is My very first Sculpt and while I should
have picked something a little easier, I figured what the Hell :)

I've never seen anyone do a Vader Sculpt and by Vader Sculpt I mean one
that closely resembles the original screen used Helmet. I tried as best I
could to add all the little wonky features that the original has.. I started this
Project over the weekend and just finished tonight (monday)...
Actually I do still have some touchups (cleanup) and some things to add, but for
the most part the Face is done.. Next the Dome :)!!!

The first picture is normal and very distracting because of the color of the Clay
( I should have done it in black ) So The second picture is the same
as the first only I darkened it up a little to bring out more of the details..

Thanks a lot I appreciate it.. Everyone:)

Yeah this is My first attempt at sculpting.. I've always loved art, but sketching
is way different then sculpting.. Patients is key and I swore, Pissed and Moaned a lot :D
lol especially when I screwed up.. I also learned that making tools is the only way to fully
appreciate the art and realize that the store bought crap sometimes just doesn't cut the mustard..

Re: My very first Sculpt.. Ever!!

Oh yeah lol:)
Something I forgot to mention is the Vader Sculpt is only the size of Your
Palm.. I've enclosed an early progress pic of it on a piece of wood.. The
orange thing in the background is the cover for an exacto knife.. I might
do a full 1:1 in the near future.. I tell you what though.. This thing was a
b*tch to sculpt being so small :)

Fantastic first sculpt! Saw this over at The Prop Den earier.

Yes to do things right you NEED to make your own tools. I was taught tool making by the guy who taught me how to restore old furniture, and now I make my own tools for everything else I do. Its extremely satisfying :)

Re: My very first Sculpt.. Ever!!

Any tool-making tips for the rest of us? Or good links to websites relating to such?

Re: My very first Sculpt.. Ever!!

Wow even for being that small thats an fantastic sculpt! I would love to see what king of tools you used:)

Actually I'm an extreme newbie at this with only about 5 days under my belt..
and as I realized while I was sculpting.. I used all of about 4 of the 24 tools
I bought, partly because I don't know any better and I just happened to buy
the worst set of tools thinking because they look cool that they'll work great..
WRONG!!!
I really felt like I was sculpting with a handicap... After looking on
Ebay I notice there are a lot of the kind of tools I could have used
while making My Vader sculpt..

but, the best advice on tools is, make as you go to gather your tool arsenal..
I realized working on such a small sculpt that I had to think of ways to remove material
from tight areas and to later smooth those same spots, so using
some dowels I had in the garage.. I shaped and cut them to size, drilled a hole
in the top and found varying pieces of steel like guitar strings.. I shaped them
to the demension I needed and then hot glued them in the dowel.. All in all it
took between 5 to 10 minutes to make each tool as I needed it.. Their nothing
fancy. Just something to get the Job done.. :)

Re: My very first Sculpt.. Ever!!

nice work m8, especially for first time and it looked full size to me till i read down lol

a mini anh would sell well, a m8s done one about the same size but with armour and so on too.

Re: My very first Sculpt.. Ever!!

Funny to see this in contrast to the human-sized Ymir. When I saw that, I thought it as tiny, when I saw this, I thought it was full-scale.

Excellent job on it. Hard to believe it's your first attempt!

You may have found your calling! :)

Re: My very first Sculpt.. Ever!!

Wow for a first time andright off the bat you produce something like this ? You have a talent that you were unaware of me thinks. What are you going to be producing in like a year from now????

Hats off my friend, please keep us up dated.

Thanks :)
I'm not sure what's next, but I want it to be good..;)

If the Vader Helmet comes out good, I think I'm gonna do the rest of his Body
Or at least attempt it. lol

Re: My very first Sculpt.. Ever!! UPDATE!! 12/14/07 :)

Alrighty, I've finished working on the Facemask.. I wish I had more time
to work on it :(

I've got the Helmet ready for casting and just waiting on the materials to
come in.. Tic, Toc, Tic, Toc :)

The reason I'm doing a cast first is because I want the Proportions to be
Accurate. I'm actually gonna use the Facemask cast as the base for
which to put clay on to Sculpt the helmet. This way the helmet won't
look oversized or undersized..

Here's the Facemask Ready to go for Molding.. I really Hope this will be
the most Accurate Mini Vader Helmet around (fingers Crossed)..

Re: My very first Sculpt.. Ever!! UPDATE!! 12/14/07 :)

I've had requests for Me to take a picture of a Coke Can next to it
so Everyone can see the Scale the Facemask..
I don't have a Coke Can so I hope the Pepsi Can is Ok ;)

I'm going to make this little Vader helmet as though I was finishing
a full scale version.. I'm gonna make Lenses, The grill, sensors, Ect. Ect,
I think it should add more to the final look of it..

Here's the Pic
