My summer project- wooden Harry Potter wands

So due to lots of hard work and some very nice people, it appears as though I'm going to have from the 17th June to September off from work. Yay! However, this means that I'll have lots of time to kill. So being on a recent Potter-binge, I thought what better way to spend 12 weeks than making a Display board and replicating most of the wands from the Noble Collection. So. Here's the plan: 12 weeks, 40 wands, one guy, one dremel, and a crap-ton of dowels, hopefully resulting in something that I can be proud of. I'll probably throw in a few custom, one-offs as well if I have time.

So, see you all in about two weeks time!

Having bought a few dowels myself to dig into a few, I am very interested to see how this turns out. Good luck!

Hey so can any one provide me with an accurate list of wand lengths from the movies- the ones in Nobles catalogue? (NOT THE BOOK LENGTHS!) For all the wands listed above not labeled "custom", because the noble site is "approximately" and some may be longer or shorter than the lengths provided.

Thanks. One week 'till carving begins!

I only have 4 wands in my collection, but here are the measurements:
Severus Snape: 13 and 1/4 inches
Lord Voldemort: 14 and 1/8 inches
Albus Dumbledore: 15 and 3/4 inches
Luna Lovegood: 13 and 1/4 inches

Hope that helps you get started! Looking forward to seeing your progress!

Hi guys, me again.
Work on this project has STARTED! Harry's wand is now in progress... problem is that my dremel overheats VERY quickly, so I'm limited right now to about an hour day (it is battery powered as well (0_0) )

Pics to come on Monday, tomorrow is yet another family get together. Yipee.

Cheers,
CCC

I have got approximately 1/2 of the beggining shaping of the dowel done so far. The pics aren't going to be spectacular!
(May end up remaking Harry's later on, I didn't get one of the bumps on the handle right before I thinned it down too much. Teaches me never to start carving when I'm pissed off with something!)

P.S. This is the piece of wood I started with, an old curtain pole I think...

I think I'll only do the WIP pictures for this one, cause you guys probably don't want to see what is basically the same thing over and over again.

Unexpected update: managed to get an hour of carving this morning, here's Harry's so far:

It's not often I say this about power tools, but I DESPERATELY need a corded dremel. I can't be doing only an hour of work each day, or the project won't get done, and we're running close to the mark already.

So Harry's wand is almost done, but I wish the weather would start behaving and stop being so bloody British- flooding, in the middle of June. Typical. This has somewhat hindered my progress, along with the untimely death of our beloved Newfoundland dog. This has really put a stop to my motivation to work over the last few days. However, I'm back now, weather permitting, and I should be done with Harry's soon.

I still have some thinning of the shaft and shaping of the handle before I move onto the bark texturing (of which I have no clue how to achieve). But here it is in it's current state.

The one down side is that the shaft has a slight bend in it, which is now irritating me immensley. Anyone have any tips on how to straighten it without thinning the shaft down even more?

depending on the wood type, you can heat it carefully with a torch and bend it the other way.

this is what I do when I make bellatrix's wand. but most of the time I just heat the shaft on our stove while I'm heating water for my coffee.
