My quest for a Tennant 10th Doctor suit

Like a few people I've seen post here on the RPF, I've desperately wanted a 10th Doctor suit, but the choices out there are either costume-y, or fantastic but expensive (i.e. Magnoli). So I resigned myself to just be vigilant on sites like Etsy or Ebay to find a suit that could be a "close enough" suit. I think today I may have "the one".

My first suit I got on Etsy in 2014. It's not great.

Its only connection to a 10th suit is that its brown. And a suit. It has two buttons, the pin striping is way off, and it was clearly made in the 70's. When I had the pants taken it, I also had the pocket flaps cut in half, they were massive. The tie is a Magnoli Shakespeare tie that was made with alternate colors. The glasses I picked up at Zenni optical, a website that I found in the Tennant glasses thread. They were also less that I had hoped for.

The next suit I picked up two weeks ago off Ebay.

Its a nicer suit than the previous one ( it's Banana Republic), and it had three buttons. However, its much too light, and the pin striping is tan. So I think I'll just put this suit in rotation with my regular suits.

While I was waiting for that suit to get back from the tailors, I happened across the same Banana Republic suit jacket on Ebay, except this one was a dark brown. And it had a blue pin striping. I was ecstatic. Except...there were no pants to go along with it, just the jacket. I looked and I looked, and almost a week later, I found it: Someone selling Banana Republic pants, brown with blue pin striping. I asked both sellers to sen me pictures of the labels, to try and match them up:

On the one hand, every word on the labels matched, country of origin, material makeup, the logos were from the same time period. But the colors were different. I said screw it, and ordered them both. They both arrived today.

They're a perfect match. The suit looks fantastic for an off the shelf look-a-like, the colors are pretty good, the pin striping is blue and doesn't look costume-y or too bold. The labels are the exact same color under normal lighting conditions, they were only made different colors by the sellers different camera flashes and lighting conditions. The only problem was the pants size. The seller listed it as a 32 x 36, which I took as 32 waist 36 length, and since I am a 32 waist, getting the pants shortened is no problem. However, the pants are a 36 waist, and a 32 length. They are massive. So, right after trying the suit on and snapping those pictures, I hauled butt over to my tailor/dry cleaning lady to have the pants taken in ASAP. So, in about a week, I'll be able to unveil my 10th Doctor suit in all its glory.

And, my version 2.0 Zenni optical glasses should arrive by then. They introduced a new pair of frames that look much closer than the ones I have. And this time around, I ordered lenses with their version of Transition lenses, so I'll be able to wear them indoors and outside.

Two packages arrived today...

The glasses are much more to my liking. I'll have to wait until sun actually decides to come back to see how well the transition lenses work.

Nice find! If you don't mind me asking, how much were the suit pieces? I've always wanted that suit myself, and I'm curious about what price to expect if I found one.

The jacket was $18, and the pants were $30, for a total of $48. It'll end up costing me about $80 to have the tailoring done, but that's just because the pants were so much larger than I anticipated. I saw the same suit put up on eBay later, and I think they asked about $70 for the whole thing.

Wow, that's a great price, even with the tailoring! Congratulations on a great find! I'll definitely keep an eye out for one.

Well, I wasn't planning on buying a 10th Doctors coat anytime soon, but then Abbyshot had to go and lower the price of theirs by $100, so...

Does anybody think if I go outside in the snow and start running around with my coat flapping behind me that my neighbors will think I'm crazy? :lol

The coat pretty much finishes off the entire ensemble. It's a nice quality coat, I think I'll start wearing it to work now and again so it'll be worth the cost. I was worried about getting a size small, but now I'm glad. When it's buttoned, it fits nicely, but when its open, it does seem a bit large. Anyway, my suit should be finished by the 26th, so my anticipation only grows.

I know, right? Was not thinking about getting another 10 coat, but idly checked Abbyshot and found they had it at $185 - how can you resist that? I'm waiting for mine to arrive still - what size category did you fall into, and which size did you order? This is going to be a work coat for me as well, and I'm a little worried about it fitting over my suits. Also, are you happy with the pattern and the construction? Tell me the good news!

I'll throw up a few quick photos.

I'm a thinner guy, and not too tall, 5'10" and 145 lbs. I generally wear a size 36 slim when I buy a suit, for reference. I ordered a small because the thing I was most worried about was having too much excess fabric billowing around. I have another double breasted coat, a London Fog trench coat, and it looks a bit big when it is unbuttoned, which is how I wear it. The Abbyshot coat fits very well, and I'm happy with the size I went with. I personally think it would be worth the price tag even if it wasn't a replica coat. It's very well made, and not at all just a "costume" coat. I unbuttoned the buttons on the kick pleat, and it looks great when the coat flaps around. I've also gotten compliments on the blue inner lining. It fits well over the suit, but because it fits so well, I find it easier to not button my jacket until I have the coat on as well. This might also be because the three button suit gives less range of motion than a more modern two button suit.

And for length reference:

It's by far the longest coat I own, I have to be careful when I get in my car.

I'm really happy with my suit and coat, I'll have to get some actual good photos of everything, but until then:

Looks good on you! Thanks, glad to hear it, that's exactly what I was hoping for when I picked this up - my micro-suede Ebay coat, although really nicely cut and looking good over a vest, just doesn't feel durable enough to wear daily to work, or to survive dry cleaning, and the sleeves are cut too slim to comfortably fit a jacket under it. One more question - which glasses did you go with from Zenni? I'm debating on Magnoli's frames, but yours look pretty solid too.

I went with frame #620525. The frames were $25, and the Zenni "brand" version of transition lenses were $20. I paid about $50 in the end for them, and they came in a couple weeks. They're pretty solid, and I like the Magnoli frames, but it looks like they're sold out of the sunglasses version, and I like being able to wear these indoors as well.
