My Portal Gun Build

Hahahaha

Seriously though, I really liked this game and the designs in it.

Good luck with the build!

Wonderflex plastic vs Paper Mache Clay

I'm going to be covering a foam carving to make it hard and plastic looking. I'm deciding weather I should go with paper mache clay (Paper Mache Clay Recipe | Ultimate Paper Mache), or Wonderflex plastic. If I used paper mache, I would then use Apoxie Sculpt to fill in the low spots in the mache. If I go with Wonderflex plastic, I'd use the Apoxie Sculpt for definition on the edges.

The object I'm modeling out of foam will be split down the middle, and then re-attached together with sculpt, so I can add an indention down the center. If I use mache, it will be heavier than the Wonderflex plastic.

Ah what the heck:

Does anyone have the unfolded portal gun?

The best model I have seen yet was the one that our member "DungBeetle" (see pepakura sticky in the costuming forum) made. The link I found for it unfortunately isn´t working anymore, so you might want to contact him about that pep file.

More updates!

For the rear casing I put together a rough shape out of Styrofoam plates.

I then added foil on the inside to get the shape of the walls.

That was then covered with expanding foam. Note: you need to get the stuff that is for cracks, not big spaces. The stuff for cracks is much harder once it dries, and it costs less.

I carved it up after it dried, but it needed some more foam added as it wasn't tall enough on the top. After the 2nd coating of foam dried, I carved and sanded it into this.

The foam part will then be covered with paper mache clay, sanded, then covered with apoxie sculpt. I did some experimenting with the paper mache and apoxie sculpt, and I really think I'll be able to get a nice smooth surface on the casings.

In this picture I have sanded the apoxie sculpt, and covered it with a few layers of primer.

I *was* going to use a pep file, but I didn't find out about them until after I had done this whole process. Since it's for video, and not being worn, I think it will be OK.

Okay, those are hilarious... "Here's the framework, and then I puked on it." :)

WIPs are such fun sometimes. :)

Looks like the Flinstone version at this stage. :)

It's amazing what a little bondo and sandpaper does.

How do you keep the paint from dripping down? Paint in small portions?

I think I am finished sanding the rear casing...I might have to add a few layers of primer to get it even, we'll see. I might still have to add some more clay to the barrel though.

I ordered a sheet of styrene for the claws, but it was too thin. I did get the toilet plunger handle for the light up part in the barrel, and still need to order the 3'' clear acrylic tube.

Ok, a lot of updates since the last pics. The barrel parts are complete. The rear casing would be complete, but I messed up the final white gloss application, so I have to sand it off and redo it. I'm working on finalizing the front casing. The claws just need to be painted, and the faux screws applied on the outside. I finally got the clear acrylic tube. Hoping to have it completed next Friday (not sure if that include electronics).
