My Iron Man Mark III Helmet 3d Print Files (V3 available in post #1 now!)

I have some questions about the V3 files.

1. It looks like there is a system to lock the back piece into place. How does that work?

2. When I printed the V2 files, there was a problem with the faceplate and the top vent fitting together. The edges on the V-shape were hitting each other. Is that fixed in the V3 files?

3. How do you suggest to scale it?

--edit--

I saw that it is scaled to fit a 24 inch head.

4. Any particular ways that would work well to split it to fit on print beds?

5. PLA vs ABS, is one recommended over the other?

Hi,I have some pictures of V3 helmet.

Appreciate the awesome work that drumguy560 did,and I have one proposal about the parts of helmet-top.

I think the blue area should be connect together because the forward of the top's weight is only support by the red area, and it's too weak to support the weight.

I hope the suggest is helpful for the V4 files, thanks!

not sure how you download the files either. the links take me to a page full of ads. seems pretty dangerous. which "download" button am I suppose to use? their are about 5 on the same page. most clearly being ads. thanks

I feel you man! 4shared is top ten most shady sites I've ever seen.... If you have a few minutes, I made a fake Google account (ABSOLUTELY NO AFFILIATIONS WITH YOUR REAL ACCOUNT), and then made a fake Twitter with it, which you can download with by clicking the download button by the "share" button under the file name. U will be brought to a page with two options: priority, and to the right a different one, click the latter, and then sign in with your fake Twitter. Then download with that same button and enjoy bro!

Also, I'm printing this starting yesterday and I'm soooo excited

Great thanks for sharing your files and your work. I would like to download a V2 files but there is a problem with faceplatebottomV2. Could you upload the files an other time please ?

Thanks from a french guy

angellight - at this point the V2 files are obsolete, I'd suggest downloading the V3 files. The V2 files are also on thingiverse.com if you are having trouble with the ones hosted here

you can see in the pictures how the helmet is split up. The eye frames, and eye pieces are made to be mirrored and printed twice, once for each side. the helmet is scaled to fit a 24 inch head, which seems to be the most common!

Ok, so all the back helmet files are too large to fit inside of my schools Makerbot Replicator 2, I am unable to slice them and really starting to get worried about if I can finish by the end of the school year. I know this is probably a real pain in the butt, but does anyone have the original, 24in-head scaled, 3 back helmet files, sliced in half for printing. Again I'm so sorry for the inconvience but I just don't have the knowledge or software to accomplish this, let alone in two weeks. Thanks.
also, does the jaw really need supports to print correctly because I did print it out, but supports got into the small details, and obviously, uses more filament. Thanks again. And drumguy you're helmet files are awesome, I fit the faceplate into the jaw today and it wa the cleanest seam I've ever seen in a piece from that printer

Bumping this, since it's been a couple months. I'll echo the joy over the v3 files. I hope you've had a good summer and haven't stalled out on these. And, as much as I like the new helmet files, I'm curious where you are with the neck and chest-substrate files. I haven't seen mention of those in ages. I'll also echo a desire for hinges and mounts and such. I'd suggest a thin one-piece liner for the faceplate, so the faceplate can be printed in two parts, then bonded to the one-piece liner. That will solve any weakness issues, and also can be used to create a detailed interior (greeblies, eyeframes, mounting spots for padding, etc.) for the face, and can incorporate mounts for the hinge arms. The nice thing about th eidea of a liner is that it doesn't involve modding the existing v3 files any -- it would just be an addition, using the inner surface of the v3 faceplate as a starting point. ;)

Hope to see more soon. You've been my greatest hope for a full, accurate v3 3D-printed suit since you started this thread. I'm in no rush, so take your time. I'm still over a year out from having access to a large-format DMLS printer (I'm hoping to be able to do it in titanium, but aluminum in a pinch), and having all the pistons and braces and support arms and bolts and other bits, all articulated, all interlocking... *happy sigh* I'll probably still start with the head anyway, though. *heh*

Wow, sounds like quite the project. How will you get access to a DMLS printer? And wouldn't that add up very fast, especially with titanium? Maybe you should start looking into 3D modeling if you're going to make the whole suit. ;)

That's why I'm spacing out the build. ;) A plate here, a piston there, as I'm able to afford the medium. There are several places in my area that offer it -- more all the time, and the prices are starting to come down. 3D printing in metal powder is more expensive than plastic, but far cheaper than custom milling out of billet aluminum or -- heaven forfend -- titanium.

As for doing the modeling myself... It'd be nice, but between the needed computer upgrades, the needed software purchases, the time needed to learn balanced against all the Real Life Crap™ that keeps distracting me from the Truly Important Things™... Well, it'd be at least as many years before I got to that point as waiting for others who are already working on it. *shrug*
