My FM x-wing build

Hey all,
Here is my build of the Fine Molds 1:48 X-wing.

This is the first time I used the stock decals from fine molds. The Decal for the R2 body is a custom decal I made. I am no x-pert on the x-wing so chime in and let me know your thoughts.

Thanks!

Weathering is superb, but those decals have me reaching for my sunglasses! :cool

Try knocking them down with some dark colored pastels. R2 almost always gets blue that is too light, even on some of our finest studio scale builds. Darken R2's blue, and wash out that yellow, and you're on a solid path to glory!

I love the speckling effect you have around the canopy, and the overall "degree" of weathering seems to be just right. Also, the paler blue of the canopy itself is nice to see - many folks (myself included) go with a more TIE INterceptor blue, which is too rich.

Here are a couple shots of my studio scale bird showing a darker R2, just so you can compare...

Damn it Rob! Yours almost looks like an ILM model except the nose cone is so clean! Red kirk yours looks good too! The colouring on your canopy is correct. How much to make a few sets of R2 decals like that for me? :angel

Thanks for all the great tips! I will try to tone down the stock decals a bit. I have a yellow oxide that will work for the yellow. I dont know what to do about the R2. Thats gonna be tough to darken and stay in the lines. I knew when I put them on that Fine Molds just cant seem to get R2's color right, It will be a fun challenge.

Here are a few pics of my custom R2 body decals. With some triming it will fit in the spare Fine molds 1:48 R2. The resin R2 is my replacment one for the old larger MPC kit.

Part of it may be just the pictures as to why the decals look so bright. I'm looking at mine right now, and they don't appear that bright in person...well, except maybe the yellow. I dulled mine down with some washes, so I know that's part of why mine doesn't appear so bright, but even out of the box, the red isn't that bright. I think you've got a really great model with some very nice weathering. That's a really fun kit, huh?

Funny hearing this from the inventor of the (in)famous R2 Builders "Krider Blue!"
The x-wing looks great Kelly. Always nice to see your models here!

Do you have decals for the head(dome)too? I'd love to have a set to replace the horrible moulding lines on the 1/48 scale MPC models that I have. I really don't want to attempt making another set of these, let alone a few more sets! The last ones I made by hand were hard enough by themselves!

The process I use is a solevent based cmyk process on vinyl. I cant do a white base on the clear vinyl, therefor the color wont look right unless its on a white base. Also the vinyl is to thick to conform to the dome well and still look OK. So long story short, no I dont mae the dome decals. I could make you the file and you could try your hand at making your own water slide dome decals, but again it would be missing the white base.

Sure! That would work. I'd really appreciate that! I just don't have any ink right now,but I sure would be more than able to use this when I get some! PM sent. Thanks Redirk!

Speaking of R2, why doesn't someone do a machined R2 for these kits? I know I could use one for my SS! As a matter of fact, I'm putting that in the junkyard.:cool

great work, Kelly!

Thanks Nickoli! On a side note, the bio banners. Do they work with the ecosolve type roland printers? I use a Roland vp-540 versa camm printer at work. Thats what I printed my r2 decals on.I might give the bio banners atry if they are solvent compatable.

I'll need a model,or the dimensions of the one you have for me to machine these, and make a proper size the Salzo scale X-wing. I can sculpt an original from that, then cast copies that are LOT more accurate than the ones that come with kit! Is this what you're looking for Robiwon? If there's an interest for these,I'll gladly make these for $12.00 each minus shipping.
Please forgive the hijack! Kelly, how much for the body decal with shipping? I'd love to have one of these with the old dirty(relic)look, and one with the new look,as well. If you could send me a file of the dome decals,I can print them up,and send you some completed samples. Thanks!
