My Eleventh Doctor costume Series 5 and 6

Re: My Eleventh Doctor costume *Magnoli Series 6 Tweed pics!!*

Thank you for your input on this.
I have sent Magnoli an email with a link to this thread and I am confident he will be willing to make things right. And you are right though, having the right fabric is only half the battle so I am hoping things can be ammended.

Please accept my apologies as i didn't mean to appear rude or judgemental. I think that is my problem and the problem with the internet. You cannot really express yourself correctly and others sometimes take things the wrong way. So again if that is how I have come across, I apologise and it is not how I intended it to sound.

Re: My Eleventh Doctor costume *Magnoli Series 6 Tweed pics!!*

I just got my reply from Indy.
The problems were indeed an oversight not made by him and we are currently tossing back options to remedy.
The two main points to focus on is the buttons and elbow patches. The jacket is also missing the defining "roped" shoulders, which should also be ammended.
The placement of the stripes, in respect to having to buy another round of fabric, are not a big deal to me. Even die-hard Who fans (who don't do costuming) would have to freeze-frame the show and deliberately look for that.
It sucks, but that is the way of the world. It could be worse...Magnoli could be really bad at customer service/satisfaction so I am fortunate he is one of the best.

I want to ensure everyone that Indy Magnoli is one of the best vendors I have ever dealt with in this hobby and am proud to wear anything I purchase from him.

Re: My Eleventh Doctor costume *Magnoli Series 6 Tweed pics!!*

Honestly, when you go through Magnoli you can expect a well made item, but you should never assume that the eccentricities of the item will be honored because he doesn't make the items himself. Only a fan would care about the tiniest details, which is why Steve does a good job there. If that jacket were mine, and if it fit me (from looking at it I can tell it would be proportioned wrong for me but I don't know how you measure up so couldn't judge for you) the only thing I'd do is swap the buttons and have the patches replaced with smooth leather. The darts and stripe placement can't be fixed this late in the game without starting over, and let's be honest, 3 people would notice the inaccuracy of the stripe placement and one of them has already b****ed you out here.

Like i said I didn't mean to be judgemental at all. It is a nice jacket, but for those who know me I always strive for accuracy. However accuracy is not what everyone wants and are happy with a well made item, which I agree this jacket is.....

Agreed here, but what do you mean about it not fitting proportionately? Does it not look like it fit's me?
I wear a size 38R jacket, I am a slim 165lbs soaking wet, 5' 10". I like long walks on the beach and pillow talk.

Re: My Eleventh Doctor costume *Magnoli Series 6 Tweed pics!!*

OK, the official word from Magnoli is everything will be made right.
That being said, I think we can lay this one to rest until I get a new one.
Thorneyboy has laid out the problem areas, and if Magnoli can fix them for me he will.

Re: My Eleventh Doctor costume *Magnoli Series 6 Tweed pics!!*

You most likely have much smaller hips than me. For a jacket to fit me properly it has to flare back out a bit at the bottom. Yours looks straighter down the sides. Basically if you can close it and the back split doesn't flare open and you don't look like Frankenstein's monster, you're golden.

Let's just say I don't have "Baby Makin' hips":lol
Yes, when I button her up it fits me perfectly with no flaring.
Im excited to wear this to the con this weekend and thankful that Magnoli will take it back to make the revisions.

Re: My Eleventh Doctor costume *Magnoli Series 6 Tweed pics!!*

I have checked many screen images, especially regarding the stripe positioning of the jacket and except for an inch move here of there they are all pretty much in the same location. I agree that the stripe positioning is not "as important" but for a pricey jacket you want as close to screen accurate as possible. Unfortunately this is not whereas Steve Ricks' version ticks hell of a lot more boxes towards accuracy. Shetland tweed is not something you can make mistakes on and there should have been alot more research into the jacket befoe IM had a go at making it.

I think you are overlooking the obvious fact that this jacket is tailored for General Frosty. Unless he is the exact size as Matt Smith, the darts, seams and stripes will be a little different. Having seen Ricks' jacket there are an equal number of inaccuracies there too. I think General Frosty's jacket looks great and I wouldn't change much about it. It's your jacket tailored for you. Enjoy it.

This is actually a good point I think.
Different sized people with alter the placement of the pattern. In any case, the big problem areas are going to be taken care of and I should have some pics up early next week on my con trip with a few fellow RPFers.

Re: My Eleventh Doctor costume *Magnoli Series 6 Tweed pics!!*

The only thing I could offer is, the sleeves are a bit long. Matt's jacket fits him very closely, to the point of almost looking a bit small, and the cuffs of the sleeves ride a bit high, showing his shirt cuffs.

EDIT:
Now that you mention it, yes the sleeves are shorter on Smith's jacket.
My Series 5 tweed has the shorter sleeves which is about 1" shorter than the new tweed. You can see me wearing the Series 5 tweed at the start of this thread.
Since the sleeves on the 6 have to be changed out anyway for the buttons, I will ask for them to be made 1" shorter. That should do the trick.

I'm compiling a detailed list of the changes to be made, which Mr. Magnoli has been really great in working with me on this.
-Swap out elbow patches for smooth leather
-Shorten sleeve length by 1 1/2"
-Three buttons on sleeves
-Roped shoulders
-Decrease shoulder length by 1/4"
-More curved bottom of jacket front.
I am not going to cause a stink over the placement of the stripes as this could be due to my specific measurement requirements and in all honesty, this is MY tweed jacket and not Matt Smith's. So long as the pattern is accurate and of course the fabric, I am happy.
I am hoping the last thing on my list, the curve on the bottom, can be ammended without compromising too much or any at all on the existing model.
If anyone has any additional feedback please chime in so I can give Magnoli an accurate list of changes to make.
Thanks for your support and help.
Of course fit is the more important thing. Decreasing the shoulder width will give me a more tighter look as it appears to fit on Matt Smith.
As Risu stated, at this stage, there are some things that cannot be changed without having to start from scratch - and those things are all related to the stripes.

This bears repeating.

Jacket looks great dude - once you've swapped out the buttons and elbow patches it'll be a winner. Have fun and enjoy it!

Thanks dude. I'd give you some rep, but I keep getting that "you must spread rep around before giving it to e-wan again"
So how about a thumbs up instead?:thumbsup
make it two:thumbsup
and one of these;)

No worries! Sometimes people forget it's supposed to be fun. :thumbsup

Re: My Eleventh Doctor costume *Magnoli Series 6 Tweed pics!!*

I've purchased from Magnoli before, his customer service is great. Can't wait to see the new jacket. This thread is making me motivated to perhaps start my own DW costume. I'm almost a twin of Peter Davison, so I'd have to do the 5th Doctor.

Does Steven Ricks have a website? I'd like to check out his work and while I can find references to him, I don't see an actual site.

He has a blog that chronicles his work, not sure if he has an actual website. I can try and find his contact info for you...
His work is really great - especially since HE makes the items personally and pays close attention to detail.
He has a wide variety of "Who" related clothing and can custom make pretty much anything you want.
The only drawback is that his stuff is more pricey than Magnoli, but you do have the luxury of knowing he is personally making it for you.

The patches do also need to be smaller to match the real Doctor jacket. I imagine the best way to get the size right is to use the horizontal orange stripes of the tweed as a guide. The spacing between every stripe is not regular because it goes wide gap, narrow gap, wide gap, narrow gap and so on. Easy method to work it out is

Pick any orange line and measure to the fourth line above or below. That is the length of the patch.

I will be taking a few pics of me wearing the jacket with the sleeves pinned up at the new length I will want - I will post them here for approval, but it's looking like they need to be about 1.5" shorter.
