Music Today: What happened? (Short Rant)

There are no Anti-Government statements being made with Mainstream Music in today's world

What about Rage Against the Machine? Sure they aren't as active as a group now but they had a lot to say. Tom Morello's new band The Nightwatchman is very political as well. I suppose System of a Down was pretty political as well, although they spoke more about raising awareness of issues in their own country rather than the US government. I think its just not a hip topic anymore so you aren't seeing many bands focus on it.

I'd say that Muse is mainstream enough and does have some protest-songs.

Like... Uprising and the resistance are downright anti-government. And damn popular.

I don't understand a word of icelandic, but Sigur rós is also gaining popularity.

The point I'm trying to make , is the lack of inventive kind of music in Mainstream nowadays, it's like it's being made in a factory , there is no exeptional distinctiveness in music being made, it's all about the great dollar sign. All these Idols, The voice programs , it's too politically correct , as if it's all controlled by the Government being fed to the masses, that's why I don't watch TV, I watch my stuff on the internet or via Download.

The Freddy Mercury-Beyoncé comparison is a great example, of what I mean,The Effort being made to create something Original by yourself or with a group, being creative enough, to make something Truly yours.Like The Beatles, The Stones, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Sex Pistols, Nirvana, Franz Ferdinand, Queens of the Stone Age, even the Kaiser Chiefs had some originality to them, but where has the Originality gone to today, lack of inspiration, too much Government influence?

Ofcourse there are enough great bands or other kinds of music out there , but are they mainstream? Are they allowed to become mainstream by the Government?

I'd argue that it has been this way for pretty much since music was first invented. Mostl of the mainstream stuff is going to be, by and large, tame and probably very bland and uninspiring to lots of people and people who don't like that kind of music gravitate towards the fringes of the music scene to find the music that they like. Think about it, every generation brings about a change in the kind of music that's popular with the mainstream and, for that matter, with a particular segment of the population or part of the world. For a while there what we now call Classical Music was the mainstream but I'd imagine that your average peasant farmer of the time had no real appreciation for it and probably greatly preferred their own folk music to, then as time moved on and music tastes and styles changed people who grew up on Classical thought that whatever it was that replaced it was crap. Another example of this would be the change from the Standards (Sinatra, Crosby, etc.) to rock, a lot of our parents grew up on that stuff and when they got older and rock started to become more and more mainstream they, for the most part, thought it was all crap and longed for the good 'old days of "real music". It's the same thing now, we've grown up but our music tastes haven't really changed since we were young and we don't/can't appreciate a lot of the music that's out today. I can pretty much guarantee you that the kids growing up on the music of today will think the same thing 20 or so years down the line when music styles/tastes change again, they'll be complaining about how lousy the music of "today" is compared to when they were young and will long for the good old days of Beyonce and auto-tune.

I took a long time to find what music sounded good to me,listened to everything from Buddy Holly to AC/DC and I still have a few from that wide selection that like.

But my soul is in metal, the more odd and violent, disgusting, evil the better! if you want something "else" go look in the murky corners and find the death, black, doom, industrial et cetera types you'd be ether surprised or shocked at what some of these people are singing about,or go find the folk metal guys and gals who are bringing back the pagan ways.

And I ain't talking about Slipknot (please what a joke) I'm talking about people like The Monolith Death Cult,Satyricon,Skyforger,Six Feet Under and such.
