Movies you thought you'd love but wound up hating..

Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Arthur (any version)
Batman and Spiderman movies. To be honest I hated the first movies of both, so I never even bothered to see any of the follow-ups.

The Batman. What a boring, stupid turd. My screen name is bwayne btw, so OG BatFan. And the scene with the wingsuit. What so the Batman can't even have actual cape wings now. And that
" Batmobile", can't even articulate the hate for that thing. Frakking stupid !

The Joker. Another piece of dung. People go on and on about how great and groundbreaking. What the hell did I see then ? Did I see a bootleg copy ! LoL. Every other Joker version I've seen had at least one redeeming quality. Not this Clown ! I should have taken 3 antidepressants before watching this steaming pile.

I thought 'The Batman' was a mixed bag. That Batmobile wasn't a bad sci-fi vehicle but it belonged in a different movie. I'm so ready for everybody to get over the half-finished exposed hardware look when it comes to Batman.

'Joker' simply wasn't a Batman movie IMO. They used the name and draped it over a Scorcese imitation. Joachim Phoenix's character in that movie would never pose any threat to Batman or Gotham. He would not come up with mastermind schemes. Harley Quinn would not fall for him. There's no resemblance.

I know they are making a sequel now with Lady Gaga. They will probably change Phoenix's character in implausible ways (raise his raw IQ level, etc) trying to shift him into the conventional Joker. They might also make her the mastermind. The latter is a strong possibility because of gender politics lately.

Never watched it, don’t ever plan to.

Back to the Future 2. What a confounded mess!

Back to the Future is still my favorite movie 40 years later.

I never found BTTF#2 confusing, even as a kid.

I think #2 was an interesting way to handle a no-win situation. Zemeckis & Gale were pushed into doing a sequel. But they didn't want to spend a movie in the future and they didn't want to remake the first movie. So they came up with a way to subvert the expected storyline and get out of the future pretty quickly. Then they dived into a storyline that was only possible in a time-travel scenario. It was a pretty fresh take for a sequel in 1989.

Yeah, the first one will always be the best.

I never said it was confusing. I called it a confounded mess!

I missed this thread back in 2016. Just read through it and 2 standouts for me personally that I am floored about being on the list: Captain America:winter soldier and Blade Runner. I am not calling anyone out or saying they are wrong, but I am genuinely perplexed on these 2 in particular.

I understand Blade Runner isn’t for everyone. I love Blade Runner and @mugatu’s post #33 in this thread describes a lot of reasons why. The first version I saw was the 1986 CBS TV edit. I was young and the voice over helped me follow the narrative, that’s my personal reason for liking the voice over version better. Loved the atmosphere and I vividly remember thinking at the time when Batty says “time to die” he was going to kill Deckard. So thought provoking -I had to watch it over and over from that point once it hit VHS, eventually digesting and understanding it- mostly.

Winter Soldier. Can’t understand this one. Admittedly I am hugely biased b/c my kids and I loved it, and to this day is still one of my favorite marvel films. It’s even the reason I found the RPF.

Just about every M. Night Shyamalan movie.

His later ones? Yeah, disappointing.

But 'Unbreakable' wasn't bad. And 'The 6th Sense' deserves the praise it gets IMO.

(Anybody who says the ending twist in '6th' was predictable . . . they probably watched the movie 3 weeks after it opened to see what all the hype was about. That's not a fair test. On opening weekend nobody had ever heard of Shyamalan. It was released without much fanfare in late summer. It totally looked like a mediocre movie being dumped off during a low point in the schedule.)
