OMFG!!!!!! I just had an incredible revelation!!! Tell me what you think!!!!!

My son's downstairs watching Jedi right now, and I walked past, just as Vader throws his saber at Luke-- the now well-known blade-in-the-grip-end shot. I pointed this out to him and we had a chuckle...

THEN, I realized that the centre of gravity of the spinning weapon is somewhere in the blade, just past the hilt.

Therefore, there was a rod in the hilt for the shot.

Not in the emitter end, IN THE BUTT END!
icon_eek.gif

Which is why it was covered up with gunk, washer(s), paint and a D-ring for the MOM exhibit!!!!!

Am I right? Huh? Huh?

Once again, right you are, KD!
icon_smile.gif

Funny thing is, I've known this for over a year now - it's been mentioned in past threads, and there was even a site with a clear screen cap of the saber with the blade coming out of the butt (forgot the URL)!

How we failed to put 2 and 2 together on this point, as you just did, is amazing.
I think it probably covers lots of the "unknown territory" that we've been hitting our heads against a brick wall over.
icon_wink.gif

Still, this doesn't erase the fact that there WAS a blade on the correct end. So, in essence, this is the first double-bladed saber in SW history!
icon_biggrin.gif

Lonepigeon: I would LOVE to see MoM again, but I've not heard anything about the next time it will be returning.
icon_frown.gif

BTW, thanks for the accurate Linhof bracket measurements - I had no idea Blast-Tech's were off, albeit 1 mm.

Yes, Dan...my head is on the verge of exploding.

The more you know about this saber, the more you realize you don't know!

False alarm, guys...
I thought everyone knew the story??

They digitally edited the shots to put the blade on the other end cos the saber didn't land correctly.

So in actual fact, the saber rod was in the correct end in the actual prop.

Sorry...

sounds like after-the-fact hokum to me... the weight had to be in one place for it spin that way... and digital tech wasn't sofisticated enough to do that much back then... I think that story's just there to protect "Mr Smith"

I have to agree, Ron. This issue needs a hard second look.

If for no other reason, how can one explain the lack of a blade where the actual emitter end was??
If it was spinning irregularly, that would be due to the fact that a blade was throwing it off...but since we don't see one where one is supposed to be, it's safe to say that it was in the butt end.

Johnleprekan:

Never trust a cropped pic as far as anything on the outside edges of that pic, we have learned this on the Obi ANH saber when the hole transistor washer thing came up.

Where did you get this from???
I have always believed that it is another hex bolt just like the other 6 that are visible.

Do not jump the gun and have this thread archived, let it end on it's own as this could go on for another month or who knows. Just let it naturally fall to the back pages and then archive it. Or we will have to start a second thread when we can no longer reply to this one. Ya dig?

Not trying to jump the gun, Ken. It just seems that towards the end of the week, it was losing steam and interest, and we were having some redundant posts rehashing stuff that had already been discussed plenty.

Geez...jump all over me, why don't ya?

About the hex nut under the door latch being different? I have no idea where FMC came up with that, either. Maybe he'll reply, I see him online now.

, that should have said " bolt" not " screw"
icon_razz.gif

Nothing new there, just added it to the list since it was brought up in the thread.

not to throw a monkey wrench into this but I think the saber which Vader throws at Luke is not the same saber from the MOM which we are discussing...

the only thing I can assume from the photo is that the silver disc is that object under the shroud, but if that were the silver disc we would be able to see the control box and at least 2 of the black bolts...But they arent visible in the pic..
Also, if that is the silver disc its too far from the shroud.

Im thinking this is a different saber..

throw-saber.jpg

I just watched that scene about 10 times in slow-mo and it does look like the center of spin is in the lower part of the blade.

In the frame right before the one DS posted, you get a fairly clear shot of the top of the saber, where you can see the flat edge of the shroud and the d-ring and there are no bolts near the midband.

Maybe it is a different saber. Nothing surprises me now!
icon_lol.gif

I just e-mailed our resident "screen cap king," Rayra. Maybe he'll be able to toss in some good sequence shots.

(BTW, if this is a different saber, I'm not about to get started on it!
icon_razz.gif
)

John, nope, it isn't the Barbican saber...and I never thought it was, judging from the pics.

Here we go: From Rayra!

...

Does anyone happen have pics of that saber that being auctioned on Ebay a few months back...The one that was supposedly an ROTJ screen used version???

But if it isn't an FX-only shot (ie., adding the blade to the butt-end to accommodate the way it ended up after being thrown), then why oh why would anyone create a saber that has a blade coming out of the butt end???

"er... that does not compute...!"

LOL, yep. I saved them just in case.

There's not much to compare though, as the screencaps of the saber in motion are far too blurred.

To me, I get the impression that there is no blocky shroud like the (regular) ROTJ Vader saber has? The eBay one had the same looking shroud as the regular/MoM saber, so if other people see the same thing, I guess we can rule it out.
