More details on the Vader ROTJ saber - Please archive

Steve would it be possible to post or email me those pics???

Im mostly concerned with the black bolts on the saber which can be seen on the second saber (on top right) screen caps that Rayra posted...
Those look like rounded black bolts...If Im not mistaken that is what was on the Ebay saber...

Sent them over - let us know what you think. Don't get eyestrain from squinting at the screen though

My son and I were watching it too the other night, freeze framing on all the sabers...and HIS idea was that since Vader's saber is a sith saber, then obviously it was a double bladed saber and it was just the other blade activated...

Makes sense to me

My son's downstairs watching Jedi right now, and I walked past, just as Vader throws his saber at Luke-- the now well-known blade-in-the-grip-end shot. I pointed this out to him and we had a chuckle...
THEN, I realized that the centre of gravity of the spinning weapon is somewhere in the blade, just past the hilt.

Therefore, there was a rod in the hilt for the shot.
Not in the emitter end, IN THE BUTT END!

Am I right? Huh? Huh?

I'm gonna go one further and say that MOST of the time we see vader's saber in the film is NOT the one in the Mom pics...

As I said before...we froze the pic on every shot of the sabers, frame by frame...and I didn't see one hex bolt on the thing...lots of silver, solid silver...but no black dots...the only ones I did see were on the thrown one and they line up with the Graglex port plugs on either side...

It looked like Luke's Graflex (no ears)with a black midband at most times...the curious thing is that the port plug, or glass eye or red button was missing too...it was pretty smooth.

I didn't see the shroud either on most shots...you only really see it on the hand getting cut off scene...you can see the top D ring attachment there too.

Go frame by frame as Luke kicks Vader down the stairs(he somersaults)...check it out.

I'm really thinking of making a "hero" version of the saber, same as usual, with no bolts...

I forgot what the Barbican looked like...but could this one be the real hero saber?

I also noted that Lukes hero saber is really the black version 2..the only shot where we see the "Hero" with brass vane and control box, is in Vader's hands..."Constructed...etc".

We now joke that THAT one is Vaders...Luke's is the black one.

not to throw a monkey wrench into this but I think the saber which Vader throws at Luke is not the same saber from the MOM which we are discussing...

Yup, looks like a Graflex with black midband to me...

</TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE><SPAN CLASS=$row_color>

Maybe they needed one end of the saber to be somewhat pointed towards the catwalk beam, to synchronize with the expplosion, but didnt know which end until the footage got to ILMs FX dept....When the FX dept finaly got the footage they find out the grip end is the only end they can stick a blade in and still have it synchronized with the explosion and rotation of the saber..

hmmm,
I don't see any bolts that match this saber anywhere in the screencaps. I'm with Steve on this one. I don't think this is it.

</TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE><SPAN CLASS=$row_color>

Once more I see this saber being pushed as an original---It's not! I have one that was Identical to that before I started revamping it. I believe I finally found out that they were made by Mark Worly about 10 years ago. So ditch those photos!

Cyland,
The only reason this particular saber resurfaced was it was noticed that the saber visible in the screencaps of Vader throwing it didn't have any visible hex bolts in the normal position and it was thought (for a very short time) that this one might have had a similar pattern.

I don't think the consensus on this saber has changed.
Still not a screen prop.

Can anyone tell me if the shank of the "tire valve" is flat on one side or two?

None of the shots I have show the front edge to any degree better than this one from earlier...

Brevin-Vader-ROTJ-3b.jpg

Judging from this shot, I'm saying it's only flat on the one side. The way it curves to the front, if it is flat there, it's a very small area.

Does anyone else have a shot with a better angle on this?

Yes, just flat on the one side.

So, does anyone think these 2 sabers are the same, or were the same at one point?

Actually, isnÂ’t there another pic of the stunt ESB saber that had a blade in it and the mid-band is black, or did I imagine that?

Kenny, you didn't imagine it!

no, your not crazy...I believe the pic your talking about is on the POSW site..The saber seems to have a big black thick clamp...

Yes, they look like the same thing to me.

Something that clinches it for me is that they both have a wide grip spacing or a grip missing.

With the way the grips are spaced on both images, that stunt saber appears to have only 5 grips. ...but now I'm going off topic.

Agreed, Steve.

Hey Ken, I was thinking the same thing the other night when the first pic was posted (saber w/o blade and black midband). I could've sworn I saw it somewhere! Nice catch.
