Millennium Falcon Gold Dice

I heard some apocryphal rumor that they were the same dice as used in some car from American Graffiti.

A cursory Google Image Search yields nothing definitive.

...Anybody wanna watch American Graffiti?

Star Wars (1977) - Trivia - IMDb

A small pair of metal dice can be seen hanging in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon as Chewbacca makes preparations to depart from Mos Eisley. Set designer Roger Christian claims he added the pair of dice hanging in the Millennium Falcon cockpit (briefly seen when Chewbacca bumps his head on them as he first enters) because there were dice hanging in Harrison Ford's car in American Graffiti (1973). However, Ford's character had a skull hanging from his rear-view mirror. Ron Howard had the fluffy dice. They don't appear in subsequent scenes, because they were stolen from the set and not replaced.

So we can neither confirm nor deny...

I think as it stand, it seems confirmed that Roger Christian hung dice in the Falcon because he hung dice in one of the cars in American Graffiti. I guess he got the character's cars mixed up. I believe a lot of people are jumping to the assumption that they are the same fuzzy dice. But the claim is that he simply hung dice. He is not saying they are the same dice from American Graffiti or even that they are fuzzy. Just dice. We know there are dice in the Falcon for the one scene (and at least one publicity shot) before they were stollen from the set. We can tell they are shiny metal. It is hard to tell what color they are but all color references for EU states they are gold. Other than that, I cannot find a LFL reference to the color of the original dice. According to reports, dice will be in the Falcon of Eps VII and those will be gold and are meant to represent the dice we saw in Eps IV.

I was going to buy on Amazon as they has as set I could get shipped for under $8. However, I noticed a store on eBay (GameNerdzCom)selling the exact set for $2.52 + $2.00 shipping. I purchased on 25 June and got them today (30 June).

All the references have them as gold. I don't really doubt that they are gold but I also understand anyones doubt since all those references are EU and they could be built on an assumption and its hard to distinguish between gold and silver on film at that resolution. I don't know that i ever heard a LFL speak of dice color.

You can tell they are some sort of reflective metal. Take a look starting at 45 seconds in:

However what we do know is that JJ Abrams thinks they were gold and the new trilogy will have gold dice hanging in the Falcon.

Ya, its difficult to say... they look gold here in this screen grab but a silver metal could reflect the color of Chewie's hair and the lighting conditions in the docking bay and appear to have a color cast...

The dice in the Falcon for the Vanity Fair cover don't match the ones from the guy that said he sold to Pinewood... so maybe pinewood bought a bunch of different versions for the prop guys to choose from. Seems picky, but who knows....

Look the same to me.

Same as the ones you bought, or closer to....

The ones the guy posted on his listing had an enormous single dot like this:

So that is the version I was looking for.... But when I got my Vanity Fair cover, I noticed the single dot was quite small (at least I recall thinking that)

Here is my question. When did you get that image. Recently? Or back when I started this thread?

Here is my question. When did you get that image. Recently? Or back when I started this thread?

That pic I just grabbed from an image search, but I'm 99% sure it's the same image the ebay seller was using. I stared at that giant "1" side many times in my search for a matching dice.

I have no proof, but I just do not think that was the same image he had on his listings back then. I find it hard to believe i would not have noticed such an obvious detail because I went through various other vendors looking for identical dice at a better price. Also, I think such a detail would have been mentioned by someone in this thread when it was first discussed.

You will note that the seller is using a different listing title. I also note that he has already sold 54. I believe that this is not a grand total since he also has separate listing and I am willing to bet he had to relist the auction so he sold more in those. My point is that he keeps saying that the dice are from the same stock. I doubt that because I find it hard to believe that before he sold the dice to pinewood, he had a huge number in his possession. It is my belief that he sold out of his original stock and as is common, the original dice are no longer made or at least not in the same way. Just my theory.

I can say without doubt that his original listing had a big center dot... the pic may be wrong, but for sure it was big. I'm surprised *I* didn't mention it...

I can check my home computer when I get there. I'm pretty sure I saved it somewhere for reference. I looked through tons of listings, specifically dismissing any that didn't have the large center hole.
