Metal Movie Cap Shield on a budget **DONE!! FINAL PICS ON PAGE 4

Any advice on trimming the rolled part of the sled off? What's the best way?

DISREGARD, JUST FOUND THAT PART OF THE POST. ;)

Hi,

This thread is amazing and I'm hoping to build my own shield using these methods. I do have a few questions though for anyone kind enough to answer.

I ordered a sled off ebay, but it's not perfectly round and it has a few dents in it. It was supposed to be brand new, but I haven't had any luck finding this sled anywhere else for a reasonable price and don't know if I can get one in better condition. I've attached a few photos so that you can see.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to handle these dents (i.e., how to get rid of them)? Or do you think I should try to return the sled and start with a new one? This is my first attempt at anything like this, so advice would very much be appreciated.

If I should start with a new sled/shield, does anyone have any recommendations on where to order/purchase an aluminum blank (ideally with grooves)? If so, please PM me and let me know. Thanks a lot!

Kirks,

Use a sand bag (or just a bag filled with sand) and a nylon tipped mallet to get dings out. Anyone with a planishing hammer or English wheel can smooth it out as well.

Have fuN!

I've been having the damnest time removing the paint. I've used two different extra strength removers, and it hardly takes any paint off, it's driving me crazy!

Try using citristrip. Most strippers in general don't work as well in colder environments. Not sure what it's like where you live

Vancouver. T shirt and shorts weather right now. I'll give it a try, thanks.

Thanks, JPH. I ended up ordering a shield blank, but I still have the sled. I'm thinking I may make it into a comic book version if the shield rather
than movie, so your advice will be useful. I'll have to give it a try.

On a different note, has anyone figured out a way to minimize/eliminate the hole in the star while making the spun effect? I tried pushing the metal back down after poking the tiny hole, but it doesn't look great. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for all the advice i built my own this weekend using the method did not come out as well as yours some issues with the painting my rings are not perfectly round. I am very happy with the results though may try to do it again in a few months and make a better one thanks for the awesome thread.

Re: Metal Movie Cap Shield on a budget

Okay, stress test! One of the things that I (and other members) have wondered is if the heavy-duty adhesive foam tape will be up to the task of holding the harness to the back of the shield. I decided to install the brackets and run an overnight test. You can see from the first pic I'm not being shy with the tape. I wanted major coverage. Then I rigged a quick harness (with a couple old belts) and hung it a mere 2 inches over a thick comforter. If there's a fall overnight from a tape failure my shield will have a gentle landing. I'm not worried, Cpt. Rogers is overseeing the entire experiment .... stay tuned :)

So, from reading this thread, this worked really well, but...can you swing it around and play with it and not worry about it flying off? I'm, uh, asking for a friend and in no way do I mean me. Because I definitely don't want to play with it. :D

I've run a 5k with my sled shield slung to my back or in my hand using the mounting tape valor suggests in his thread. It is very solid.
