Using Aqua before a 2K isn't really necessary. I put urethane based 2-component clears directly over Alclad, Alumaluster, Molotow, etc. (My goto is House of Kolor UC35.) The important bit is to make sure it's urethane-based so that it doesn't dissolve the binder and lift the metallic particles in the chromealike.
With things that don't need a lot of handling, I just do 1-2 coats of Aqua. Aqua goes on so thin that the gloss isn't too distracting, looking almost like there is no top coat, whereas an automotive clear gives a much thicker coating and gives a bit of a laminated look.
