Maz Kanata Box Containing the "Skywalker" Lightsaber Build

Thanks! I started by drawing the cracks on, then carving with small sharp bit. Afterwards I used a jigsaw to make some plunge cuts, gouge deeper areas and random cuts on the end. I also used some golden oak and dark walnut stain, with a little flame burn on ends.

That looks pretty good. When you're done, it won't even look like plywood.

I've been thinking about doing one of these, but not at 1:1 scale. Maybe something in size not much bigger than a converted Graflex.

Here is my start on the top. Not screen accurate per se, but close. Still a lot of matching in the bottom and top to go, just thought a update was due.

Updated to a better picture. This was also done with 1/2 plywood at 23" length. Top piece is 7 3/4 bottom is 3 1/4 for an 11" width. I know I keep changing the dimensions, somewhat.

that looks awesome!! what did you do to weather it!! did you carve all those cracks?! thats awesome looking!!

Wow that looks great! The top two boards look perfect, your weathering is spot on :D
I've used the flame burning before and am always surprised with how good it can look, but I haven't tried creating cracks like that, definitely on the list now.

Great job so far!

Have you thought about using furniture board instead of plywood? It will look like the real thing, finish easier and look more authentic to what the object is meant to be. (plywood will always stay like a sheet). You can coax the cracks by getting some "green" pine and drying it out, hell the hardware stores I always go to seem to always have poor quality dregs on the shelves already cracked (or liable to go - look for wide grain spacing on one side) that I usually have to sift through. Where are they when you need them?

Even pine could easily be finished to look exactly like Maz's box!

Getting experimental, you could soak the pine until it absorbs a lot of water, cut the joints and assemble and let it dry out. You might get the shrunken dove tail joint event that way.

I wonder what theatre design tricks there are for something like this? this box looks just like the stuff the theatre people were working on when I did art at university.

i dont follow when u mean furniture board?

I think he is referring to rough cut pine used in most furniture construction. Because it is already rough cut is seems to age well from what I have observed.

I am going to experiment with some pine as well. I was having trouble finding the correct width and thickness material, but I have several samples I just cut to size to begin experimenting on.

Here are some updates using pine for the tops and the aluminum strips for the iron reinforcement

Re: Maz Kanata Box Containing the "Skywalker" Lightsaber Build

While NOT definative in any way, here is some information from this ancient tree species, which supports the idea that it is "pine"; http://swfanon.wikia.com/wiki/Wroshyr_tree.

"The tree borrows elements from the fictional wroshyr tree while incorporating other elements from some of the tallest real–world trees such as the California Redwood, Sequoiadendron, Douglas–fir, the Coast Douglas–fir and the Western Redcedar, among others."

Alrighty. A quick and dirty question of all you "Experts"

I read on one of these "10 (or so) secerts of..." sites that Maz's box is the same exact prop used in a New Hope. Where Obi Wan pulls Anakin's lightsaber out of.

Truth? or fantasy?

I do not have pictures from fabrication of the hinges, but I can take some of what I did. Keeping in mind that this is a crude type box, I used a dremil and sheet metal cutters and wrapped/beat it into shape.
