The second picture shows one of the hinges. I have looked all over the net for more pics and just cant find anything else.

I want to make this in the worst way! I really like the measurements you came up with.

I've been working real late hopefully if I come home early tonight I'll take a picture of my mothers great great grand fathers sea captains chest

though the chest is much larger then TFA chest it's the first thing I thought of when seeing it on screen

another thing I liked was the visual dictionary said the saber was in the box with a historic sextant the early space explorers used. that really makes me think of it being a "sea(space) captains chest"

I can't wait to see your progress. anyone here with 3D printing skills who would like to tackle making the latch/lock mechanism?

i could have a go at 3D modelling the latch based on the dimensions in this thread

I am thinking I will have to have some of my shop guys at work fabricate this to a piece of sheet steel. Make the plate and retainer one piece. Looks like a cone from a stationary pen holder with a washer welded on top.

unless as stated above and someone wants to volunteer to print one :):thumbsup

As i dont want to take over the thread with loads of screenshots :lol here's my progress so far:

maz kanata box_progress.jpg
I decided it would be easier to 3d model and scale the latch onto a box; so I made a rough box shape.

Its slightly smaller compared to what previous posts suggest as it didn't look right when I overlayed the original image.
(I still think its slightly too tall)

Dimensions (in metric:rolleyes):
Width:400mm
Depth: 203.2mm
Height: 180mm

I will now have a go at scaling the width back up to 20 inches as described in the first post.

When I saw this in the movie I immediately wanted it to display my ESB/TFA saber. I have a table that has been in my wife's family for over 200 years and the wood looks just like it

that looks awesome!

Re: Maz Kanata Box Containing the "Skywalker" Lightsaber Build

I did some real life scaling with cut wood and my final dimensions I came up with will be:

24" L x 11" W x 10" H

Because of some awkward board widths I have the following:

Front and Back is a 24" L x 6" H board & 24" L x 4" H for a total of 24" L x 10" H
Sides are the same but cut at 11" lengths

Top is made from plywood and pallet wood. the larger piece is 7&1/4" x 24", the second piece of is 3&3/4"
Bottom is all pallet wood cut to fit at 24" x 11"

The wood I used is just over 3/4" thick for the sides, the pallet material is roughly 1/2" thick for top and bottom.

If you have some good screenshots, share them please. We have very limited screen views of this so far.

I really like the concept you have here, I will have to look at a conversion of your dimensions.

I would really like it if you could give this a go. I altered my dimensions slightly by going with 24"L x 11" W x 10" H I will be using 1/16th x 1 1/2" aluminum strips for the metal support strips and carriage bolts for the rivets.

I did some looking around at the lock protrusions and it could be something else, but I think it may be a cut down Victor acetalyne torch tip with a washer added to it. This could prove difficult to make, the brass/copper will but easy enough to cut down, but securing the washer could be tricky.

That is a very cool idea! I wouldn't be surprise though if it's a found part. Even the side handles look like old hand made handles

Been a little busy over the new year to carry on with the 3d model.

Im guessing its a found part too, I even started looking at the tips of airbrushes but I think they may be a little too small.

I think the spout is from a vintage oil can as used in a machine shop. Some of these were made with the ring to hold it directly over the spout, like we see in Maz's box. The type is generally very squat and small, the perfect size for the box. Downside is many older ones have been modified or messed with in the shop they were used in, therefore it's likely that the ring addition was not there originally but soldered or brazed onto the spout by a machinist back in the day to modify the oil can and make it easier to use in whatever application or job they needed it in.

I was at some antique shops today looking for materials and saw a similar but smaller one of these. I thought the same thing, dimensionally it looked like it would be very close. I believe this was the smaller oil application can for doing chains and such.

i wish we had better pictures of this thing... or they put it on display... so so curious

Here is my start on the top. Not screen accurate per se, but close. Still a lot of matching in the bottom and top to go, just thought a update was due.

Updated to a better picture. This was also done with 1/2 plywood at 23" length. Top piece is 7 3/4 bottom is 3 1/4 for an 11" width. I know I keep changing the dimensions, somewhat.
