received my custom Aubrey post-captain undress uniform. I received it at work, so I have yet to try on anything except the uniform coat. It fits perfect.

My biggest issue is that it has faux pockets on the coat, the veset and the pants. I'm a bit miffed at that, becausae I spent a decent amount of money on this.

Well, it seems I am the only one keeping this thread alive. But here it is, my finished uniform. To be worn this halloween and for many years to come.

Facial hair has to go. Not in regulation for an officer

Agreed, but I have a Pirate event in New Orleans after my Halloween event, so sadly, I have to keep it at the moment. The good thing is that no one will notice as probably no one at the party will know who I am. They'll probably think I'm napoleon, hahaha

Excellent Aubrey costume....great job.

I'm fortunate to be friends with a fellow who was a "common sailor" extra in the movie (no lines, but he 'looks the part', and in several scenes, and a couple with Crowe), and he said wearing those costumes and being on set every day was like taking a trip in a time machine,...he's a history teacher here locally now, and is always reveling us with insider tales of his time spent during production.

Great job on a great costume. I really like old historical clothing, it's a shame that there aren't more opportunities to wear them. Especially male clothing gets much more interesting and varied than the modern variants the farther back you go, and this one of those great uniforms that are not seen enough in my opinion.

One nitpick:Is the lowest button on the waistcoat unbuttoned out of habit or does it get to tight with the belt beneath it otherwise? If it's because of modern dress code it feels a bit out of place, since M&C most likely takes place before it became acceptable for a man of his position to leave it unbuttoned. He does leave a slew of top buttons unbuttoned regularly though....hmmm...
Anyway, the thing I'm driving at is that he doesn't have it unbuttoned at any point that I can remember, and it feels very 21'st century to me. I'd normally leave such a minor detail be (no I wouldn't, who am I kidding) but in this case the whole getup really sells it to me, and it's largely undone by that reminder that no, we've not been transported back in time after all.
If it's a comfort thing then ignore me, I'm just a perfectionist of the n-th degree.

Another question: Do you plan on adding the hat?

Other than that I can't really add anything beside a tip of the hat for a really wicked costume.

Well Crickets, the buttons arrived. eBay $5

I am going to merge my fabric dye post into this one as I am pleased with the "sun-faded" color.

This is an adaptation for a "Pirate" b-day party. It is a brown cotton/poly trench coat and I am cutting and hot gluing as I don't sew.

I have 24 large brass/anchor buttons on order from ebay and 12 feet of gold trim.
Lots of work to do but thought I would post a pic to document progress for all the crickets...:rolleyes

Edit: Buttons arrive on Mon, but added some of the trim.
Looks that you got a great result.

I'm making myself a regency (female) ensemble and its inpired by the mens naval uniform.
Got blue velvet and gold piping, gold buttons, white lining for the spencer. (need to find some gold braid.)
And to decorate my bonnet (covered in black velvet)
bonnetcover1.jpg
Need to add the gold trim and feather of some kind.
Then once I do those...its onto the dress. No I can't decide whether to do it in white as in the white sailor trousers, or blue like a officer?

Thanks again for all the great comments!!!!

Ladydetemps - Looking great!!! I'm loving all these costumes!
anyone have any good sources for proper boots?

A really great job on the costume! (Wow) A couple of quick notes, Aubrey wore his hat "a thwart ships" as opposed to fore and aft which was coming into use by the RN of the period. in the first book Aubrey was a "Post captain" and only wore one epaulette over the left shoulder. He had two dress uniforms his everyday wear which was slightly soiled, and a little thread bear in places. His good dress uniform, worn only for most formal occasions, visits to the "Admirality" and etc. The last is the circular pin of jewels presented to him by a sultan, which he wore centered in a cockade on his hat. Aubrey's major actions take place just pryor to and thru the war of 1812. "The second War of Independance" for us yanks...

Really good job on the uniform, (Huzzah!) And remember always choose the lesser of the two weavels!

Any tips for making the cockade?
I'm struggling with one for my female interpretation bonnet....http://stitchintimeandspace.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/hsf-2014-challenge-15-great-outdoors_31.html
