Here's a project I started a couple of months back that is nearing completeion. Been really busy so I never got a chance to get a thread started, so I'll try and get you up to date as quickly as possible.

Mass Effect 3 - M-358 talon Pistol.

Most of this build so far has been really straight forward, so i won't go into much detail explaining the process, but if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Plans were drawn and templates used to cut the body and details from various thickness of MDF. Should have really used sintra or foamex for the thinner stuff, but price and availability was more of a consideration at the time.

All the fillets and rounds were marked on with pen before all the pieces were fixed in place. The vast majority of these were done by hand, I felt I hand far more control using a scapel, file and sandpaper.

The handle grip and trigger on these (and apparently all other ME weapons) is quite small, my giant man hand would have trouble pulling the trigger.

Again, the rounding here was all done by hand.

All the pieces were glued with PVA and clamped in place then the final rounds were made. For these larger pieces I was able to use a router.

Next up was creating all the roundy, curvey, sticky-out barrel pieces ( I have no idea what to call them all, just look at the pics and you'll see)

Combination of PVC pipe, styrene, MDF and filler x 2 :)

Next up was the handle type piece on the top, above the barrel.
Similar as before, MDF body, styrene and PVC pipe add ons the rounded.

Then the internal section of the barrel.

And last but not least, the muzzle of the barrel (oh yeah!! got the name right for this bit) These were machined from ABS, one piece was stupidly cut wrong, always remember

MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE!!!

A few little finishing details, then a coat of sander seal and primer and then pain staking task of sanding this bad boy smooth.

Ha! I've got one of these in progress too but you've set the bar high - nice job!

Mmmm. I have to say, I just love smaller weapons, especially ones with curves and clean finishes.

No promises (not with the lack of work I've had lately!) but I'll be looking for this if you manage to post a run in the Junkyard.

Thanks for the interest guys. A run in the Junkyard will be happening soon. Just need to finish the paint job on a couple and I'll be good to go. watch this space :)

Very cool! Great job on doing all of the work by hand. I'll be looking forward to the Junkyard run!

Great! I'm still working on my own so I'm probably not in the market, but there can't be enough ME gun projects and runs as far as I'm concerned. :) Incidentally, is it just me/my project, or is this gun super uncomfortable to hold? I scaled mine as big as I dared, despite having only medium sized hands, and it's still cramped. :lol

Yeah all ME weapons have really small handles/grips when properly scaled. Not sure why, though I suppose they were never designed to be held by real people.
My build is slightly bigger than it should be, I can just about get my hand in.

now, where were we??

Ahh, yeas, molding.

First off, the top handle section. Simple 2-part box mold. Should all be pretty self explanatory.

first you make the box. (don't fully seal the top/bottoms on, you will need to remove during the process. wait til the silicone is set, then fix in place)
8360924191_c085f794e0_z.jpg

Then you add the clay (this takes patience)
8360929419_d4896ef584_z.jpg

They you pour the silicone
8361993806_e9720dffed_z.jpg

Flip it over, remove the clay and pour some more silicone.
8361996100_40ab59cb0b_z.jpg

Once its set, carefully de-mold and hey presto.
8360935351_b6cf2cd01f_z.jpg

I then cut a pour hole in one end and took a cast. I slushed a layer of resin in each half first, to coat the majority of the mold, limiting the possiblity of air bubbles once the full pout happens. results were near perfect.
