Started the episode last night and finally finished it today. I think it's ok, certainly better than Arrow that's for damn sure. There's so many quality shows on cable and this doesn't even come close, but for network TV it's watchable. Writing felt forced at times and I'm still not sold on the casting. I find only Gregg to be engaging and even then, I think he's being stretched thin in the lead role. I thought I'd find Bennet extremely annoying but her annoyance is milder than I anticipated, she's actually coming off more endearing than I thought. Budget is impressive for a network TV show, I'm hoping there'll be some episodes down the road that really blow the FX wide open. It's also a Whedon pilot, plenty of room to improve over the first season.

I agree with your concerns about Gregg as a lead character. I feel the same about a Cobie Smulders, actually.
In a pilot I accept that it's difficult to really give each character their due, and most often it takes a few episodes for the actors to really settle into character. It's the rare show that is so well cast (or prepared) that they're solid from the start.

I'm a little more forgiving for this series - it's successful in that there isn't a single character that makes me facepalm so far. I feel like they still have room to grow. Considering the frantic rewrite that happened before the table reading I say they pulled it off well.

I kind of have mixed feelings about this show. On the one hand, it's neat to see some things carried over. For instance, I only saw Iron Man 3, an hour before I saw this show, so it was cool to see the extremis project brought into play. On the other hand, I didn't need every connection to The Avengers movie, thrown in, in the first ten minutes. It's almost as bad as "Previously on..." after every commercial break during Face Off.

Now, I know this is a Whedon show, but is he going to bring back every one from his past productions? So far, there was Shepherd from "Firefly", and Gunn from "Angel". How long before he brings in Xander, Buffy, or Fred? Also, is he going to rely on his classic "freak of the week" to carry the story line, or are we going to get actual plots and story arcs?

*sigh* Only reason I mentioned race is because you did. You could have said "I can't believe they cast someone over 50 for that role", but you didn't. You brought race into it. Might not have been meant as anything other than you thought you think someone younger (and I guess better looking) should have been cast, but it didn't read that way to me. Thus my statement. And as for you being asain...so what? This is the internet where all you are is font on a screen.

I have to admit for me anyway it didn't live up to the hype. However it was the first episode and they had a lot of introductions to do. I am definitely going to give it at least a half a season before I declare it one way or the other. As far as the Whedon thing goes I wonder which week we will see Richard Castle reference (both ABC).

I thought it was entertaining enough but nothing spectacular. IMO they need to slow down the pace a bit and stop trying to have every line be incredibly witty.

I wish they would just tell us what the deal is with Coulson and skip the whole attempt to drag out the mystery for a few seasons. He's either a clone or an android or some variation, it's all been done so who freaking cares?

Frankly, I am surprised no one here yet has put together Shield going after a "rouge computer group" while the next Avengers movie centers on a rouge computer system by the name of Ultron. ;P I think they have the story line leading up into the next set of heroes and plot just fine.

I wonder if they'll have some rare occasional cameos by the Avengers cast to bring together the whole franchise more. I know it's not probably a necessity, but would keep people watching anyway to catch a glimpse here and there.

It's not a bad start to the series and it pretty cool Disney is able to make all this happen. They sure have a lot of money invested into all this and are doing a very decent job at keeping things rolling along.

It's his way. Look at Firefly: Mal, Jayne, River and Zoe were all in his Rolodex from Buffy/Angel...

Now I'm not a huge comic book guy so if things are wrong I won't notice them. I do like the movies though and I thought this was pretty good so far. The first episode felt like and episode of Heroes (when it was good...) when they were searching for people with powers. I didn't dig the flying Corvette though; that came off a little cheesy. I did like when the guy mentioned the sweaty cosplay girls outside Stark Industries. :lol The dude shouldn't be knocking them because some of them I've seen are better looking than ScarJo!

My other beef with shows about people having super powers is about the fight scene with the hooded guy in the train station after Skye kicked the guy in the balls. He picks one guy up and throws him across the room, yet another guy still tries to attack him. Now even if that guy was my best friend, if I saw the guy throw someone across a room, I'd say "Bye, good luck!" and run off! They still attack him! I've lost count of the shows/movies where they do that. It's not what a real person would do.

Ming-Na is 50?!?! Still would.

I'm still looking at doing a SHIELD guy gear up (since it matches my interests outside of prop stuff) and am just curious. Thanks.

I'm kind of conflicted on the show. On the one hand, it was cheesey as all get out, and the character archetypes were horribly shallow, even for a premiere. It felt like a checklist of Marvel references and Joss Whedon show tropes. On the other hand, I think it'll expand the mythology of the MCU and I enjoyed everything involving Coulson and Hill.
