I thought the pilot wasn't bad.
I'm probably in the minority, but I really prefer the series not focus as much on the “superhero” aspect of the franchise. S.H.I.E.L.D. is more than just the support team for the “real” heroes. It would be more interesting if they showed the broader range of responsibilities (e.g. espionage, MIB-stuff, etc). The series has the potential to enhance the world in which the Marvel characters inhabit. The early Nick Fury comics were more espionage and less costumes – and that’s where I would like the series to go.
I understand they need to do some superhero material, but too much supe-stuff risks saturating the audience to the point of fatigue. It also would risk derivative comparisons with shows like, Heroes.
My wish is less of the supes and more of the espionage. Right now it's a possible hybrid of Heroes, X-Files, MIB and Mod Squad.
Colson is just a LMD. I don't mind so much except I wish they hadn't made it so obvious - "He doesn't know, does he?"
Some of the exposition and tie-in references were a little heavy-handed and awkward, but it could have been worse.
I don't like dialogue that interferes with my suspension of disbelief - the worst line: (before leaping out a window) "This is an origin story."
Verdict: Hopes are high but guarded. Given the supposed last-minute (literally) rewrite it's still relatively cohesive and the actors are uniformly promising.
