Marvel Movie Rights and Future Marvel Movies

Didn't know if this was the appropriate place to put this, but I figured since it was about the future of Marvel Movies I'd thought I'd take it here.

I was chatting with a friend of mine the other day and he was crushed to learn that Janet van Dyne (aka. The Wasp) wasn't going to be featured in Ant-Man as a prominent character. For being one of the founding members of the Avengers who was 'this' close to actually being in the first Avengers movie (She was storyboarded in the ensemble shot), I thought the same thing. And since it's looking like Janet died before the events of Ant-Man ever took place, how do we bring Wasp in that has the same level of involvement with the Avengers?

Well, nothing in these movies has to be 100% in line with the comics. Ultron for example was originally created by Hank Pym but switched to Tony Stark, so maybe a different character could take on the role? Than he suggested "Maria Hill", and that got me thinking. Here is a character who was involved with the Avengers since their beginnings, was one of the few people that Nick Fury trusted 100% and has a personality that isn't as cold or manipulative as Natasha. Plus the image of Cobie Smulders buzzing around in the battle field about 1/30th her size would just be all kinds of awesome! Unless everyone is satisfied with her role being the exposition dumper and receiver who fights with pistols (A trait already held by Black Widow), where else can she go? She can't be head of SHIELD since Nick Fury is still there and pretty much gave the title of director to Coulson (Boo!). Maria Hill is kind of stuck.

So we kill two birds with one stone. We get to have Wasp and Cobie Smulders/Maria Hill in on the action as an Avenger. What do you guys think? Appropriate direction or over-reaching?

Maria as Wasp is a great idea. Some would argue that only Janet should be Wasp. But I think if they acknowledge that she was Wasp briefly during Hank's tenure of Ant-Man, most would be on-board with the idea of Maria taking over the mantle of Wasp for the modern age.

If they connect her to Scott Lang in a way that it makes sense, sure. Just don't make it a "here have a suit because you're redundant otherwise, Hill" kind of moment. Ant-man is a legacy identity in the comics, and in the films too so why can't Wasp be as well?

Same reason Pepper Potts cannot be Rescue. The folks at Marvel seem to have little if any interest in characters outside of telling the story of the title character, or when it comes to group stories, the most bankable. If you looked at any of the deleted scenes and pre-production work for the original Avengers movie, you can clearly see that Joss Whedon was trying his best to give the women of that story a larger role but ultimately failing to properly execute it. The whole film was essentially going to be one large flashback from Maria Hill's point of view during her debriefing from the world council after New York. This was changed in post-production so that the film could be told in a 'real time' structure and, despite the loss of Maria Hill's role, was definitely the right choice to make. Or how about Captain Marvel, the first female character to get her own movie in the MCU originally showing up in Age of Ultron during the climax? They decided not to go that route and instead chose to let her own film give her character the proper introduction. Again, the right choice to make, but you can see how this all boils down to the same thing. These characters, whether they're male or female are given roles that from a filmmakers stand point are considered expendable. I've been hearing of stuff from people who have seen Age of Ultron and the one thing I'm dreading the most from what I'm hearing is that the elimination of scenes are very obvious. One being Black Widow. If you recall, we've gone through two whole movies featuring her character where the villains set up her "dark history" again, and again, and again but nothing ever really comes from it because someone behind the scenes is saying "We'll get to it later. For now, focus on the title character". Sadly at this point, Black Widow doesn't have a title of her own so all those hints regarding her history and how she's going to deal with it head on is all set up but with no clear pay off in sight.

This is why I think Maria Hill is a good fit for Wasp. Thinking about what would make her want to change roles would be interesting and, hopefully with good writing, essential to the story. If she's just some action girl with a gun who reports to the head guy, that's an expendable role and a half.

I believe Evangeline Lily's Hope Van Dyne is slated to become Wasp.

In fact, Hope is already the Wasp in the cartoon series. I guess the baddie Red Queen is a very real option too.

Ant-Man 2 and other Marvel Cinematic Universe movie announcements

Sorry if this should be posted in another thread.

Marvel Studios Phase 3 Update

Marvel just announced "Ant-Man and the Wasp" (now the first movie with a female heroine in the title, and the only one where the heroine has never had a male with the same name!) for July 6, 2018 (formerly Black Panther's date). That's moving Black Panther UP to February 16th, 2018, and Captain Marvel BACK to March 8, 2019.

They also announced 3 as-yet-unnamed movies for May 1, July 10, and November 6, 2020.

Wouldn't some of that be phase 4?

I thought phase 3 was between AoU and Infinity which starts in May 2018. Or are they using the end of Infinity in 2019 as the end of Phase 3?

Okay, I've heard this Phase stuff ever since the first Iron Man and I still have no idea what it all means. Can somebody please explain it to me?

The movies leading up to the first big team-up movie (and said movie, The Avengers) are Phase I. The movies then leading up to and including the second Avengers movie are Phase II. And so on. You see the pattern. I think both Infinity War films will be Phase III, right? *looks around to those who would hopefully know for sure*
