Marvel Films vs. DC Films: My opinion (POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNINGS)

As a former "scientist" myself I agree that Stark isn't, technically, a scientist.
It doesn't mean he's not bright enough, but an inventor/tech/engineer/designer/futurist is not necessarily a scientist.

Like I said, Tony had the word "genius" in his list of what he would be without the suit.

Well looking at the new Batsuit and seeing as how instead of re-booting him or Superman for the umpteenth time maybe there's a little hope for DC overall.

However I still say they have very few interesting characters other then those I listed,Marvel just makes guys and gals who make you want to watch.

Let me put it this way...

Stark is Wolowotz.
Banner is Koothrappali.

behold Iron Man and The Hulk.

(The parallels are actually pretty surprising.... even Raj's pants are purple!!!)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA :lol

Well my only fear is that, 20 years from now, people will still be discussing:
"Have you seen the new batsuit?"
"Here are leaked photos of the new batmobile."
"Guess who they're casting for the Joker/Lex Luthor."

Enough with the origin reboots and batsuits. Just give us good stories.

I agree with many of the sentiments here. I collected comics as a kid and I've just never been able to get into DC. In fact, I never collected DC comics, despite liking some of the characters. I honestly feel it's an inferior product, both comics and movies. I especially agree with the idea that Marvel makes their movies fun. Prior to the movies, I had no interest in Thor or Captain America. In fact, I disliked Captain America on a ridiculous level. The new Marvel movies have changed all that. I like both of them now. I collected Iron Man comics, but was never a die hard. RDJ and the Marvel Movies changed that. I'm now an Iron Man homer. The Iron Man movies are what inspired me to get into Cosplay and costume building in general. I think it was said best, outside of 4 or 5 characters, DC is lacking. Furthermore, It's an unpopular opinion I'm sure, but I just think Batman, Superman, etc are less interesting and exciting compared to their Marvel counterparts. I do watch the DC movies, but I don't own any of them and don't find them that good. Marvel I feel is way ahead of them.

I was just having a dialog with myself in shower on this very subject.

The conclusion I came to is that Marvel characters are PEOPLE - people we can relate to, super-powers notwithstanding.

DC characters are demi-gods. There's nothing relatable there.
With the exception of Bat-man - He's fascinating, but arguably INSANE.

DC is trying to catch up with Marvel in a spirit of fear, panic and haste.

I'm not sure if they planned it from the start, but Marvel's property is going like a train. They have the potential to keep the narrative going for years without the usual cycle where every third film is a reboot and origin story.

DC is desperate to get their game going. They gambled on Man of Steel being the tentpole, but because it underperformed they rushed in Batman to cement the whole thing. This the big difference with Marvel, they are about to release the almost completely unknown Guardians of the Galaxy and DC is simply fearful that Clark Kent can't carry the next movie, they just bring out they only character they feel they can not fail to score with. So the Superman sequel is now pretty much a Batman film with the JLA loosely tied to it in case the top brass decide to jettison that idea and go back to doing orthodox three-movie cycles featuring mostly Batman.

Also I don't like the idea that DC has to ban all fun and colour from their films and try to appear more sopomophistaticated simply for the sake of being "different" Because misplaced attempts at gravitas and solemnity and mistaking violence porn for drama pretty much ruined Man of Steel for me. I understand that they wanted to avoid what they perceive as the big weakness of Superman, being a "good guy" and desperately tried to make him more nuanced and tragedy driven, but he ends up being a jerk rather than a hero you want to believe in.

There is a small chance they could redeem MoS in the next one, but while I think Snyder is an OK director, he's an awful writer, so I fear we'll just see more of the same, but banking heavily on the crowd being so starry-eyed by Batman alone they will accept any crap they hurl at the screen and call a movie.

Growing up I was a Marvel kid because the characters were written as humans (where applicable) first. The stories seemed more grounded in reality than DC which seemed more fantasy (even with DC exploring psychological noir). As it happens human motives translate better to screen and that's what we're finally getting.

The films capture what is best in the comics because Marvel Studios and Marvel Comics seem to be inseperable. On the other hand I get the sense that DC Comics and Warner don't share the same bond. I imagine Warner to be populated by execs who have no innate appreciation of comics and want to make Hollywood films that feature superheroes. So they look for directors who use superhero comics as a platform for their personal vision... which is hit or miss.

On the other hand Marvel isn't making Hollywood films with superheroes ... they're translating the comic experience using film and television as the medium. To that end they hire directors who already know and love comics.

With that formula Marvel can afford to have films that are varied in tone. DC/Warner's use of Zach for SvB and JLA is a safe choice, but they're all going to be Zach Snyder - styled movies.

That's the difference.

The way I see the current state of things is that Marvel have generally been making better movies while DC have generally been making better animated series.
