Mandalorian Reference Thread

I took a closer look at it. The main receiver when looked at more closely than a quick glance shows a lot of issues as well that weren’t apparent at first. So not only are the proportions wrong, but the general details as well. This is a hard pass for me, that’s all I’m saying.

Fun is just fine, if that’s what you’re going for Ben, have at it, I truly wish you luck.
However, I assume with this being the RPF.. many folks may be instead looking for accuracy. If you wanted that? You’d have to completely rebuild it, and at that point you’re better off starting from scratch.

Well, I think there is a wide variety of collectors here, some of whom will be more than happy with this.

Definitely appreciate being able to make an informed decision though.

Thank you all for the reference pics and comparisons. The differences are much more apparent. My main concern was pick-up-able functionality. I have a fileset of pretty darn accurate 3D-printing files. Comparing them now against the reference here, it's more accurate than I realized. But it's solid and static. The main thing the Nerf has going for it is a rack-able breech and opening top plate. I hadn't seen any replicas or 3D models that incorporate that. If I missed any that have moving parts, do please point me at them? *lol*

I think I am going to get one of the Nerfs through GameStop, so I can make payments over time. I like to have accurized pieces that aren't fragile, and that have interactivity, for convention tables. The barrel and stock are easily replaceable with 3D-printed pieces. The receiver... I'll have to see, once I have it in-hand and disassembled, whether I can maybe tweak any of the dimensions that still need it, depending on the final product.

I love it.

I may pick up a more accurate prop or may stick with this.

I get so tired of $300 for this, 5k for that.

It is fun to just buy something for a reasonable price and have fun with it.
Yup. The 3D fileset was sixty-some bucks. The Nerf is $110 through GameStop, and between payments over the next eight months, and using member coupons to take maybe twenty bucks off that, it's not that much. The rest is just materials I already keep on hand.

Sure, happy to help.

I don’t mean to be the “fun police,” as I said, if that’s what anyone is going for.. by all means. Fun, cosplay, all good, I hope you enjoy it. I would just hate for someone here to fall for the marketing and think they’re getting a better product than they are. As Ben said, informed decisions.. With a stock and tuning fork swap, and a repaint of course, it could be pretty nice.

If I was to separate myself from the accuracy mindset, I could see myself having one just as a Nerf gun. It would be cool to Nerf battle your friends while wearing the Mando helmet.

Cost wise, there is no comparison. Rifle kits alone are very likely higher to start, plus if you have to send it out for paint.. you’re talking some serious cash. To be honest, I haven’t seen a single 3D file yet that has nailed it 100% either, so there is always that to consider.

I think you’re well within your rights to criticize. There are certainly worse fun police out there, lol.
That would be me! :D I've spent my life having people roll their eyes at me grumping about someone or other "doing it wrong". I try to do it from a place of informing and educating. If I didn't care, I'd let people go on being wrong. I mean, in a larger sense, it's utterly unimportant. It's not like I'm trying to point out they're driving the wrong way on a one-way street (which I've also called out people for). And, in fairness, I've been wrong about a great many things in my own life. I hate it. But I'd rather be corrected on something than not. Growth tends to be uncomfortable, and if I'm not perpetually growing and evolving, then what the heck am I even doing?

In which light... Mr Mold Maker, this has been a... bad year, for me. But some good things have happened, and the time to think and have other things come along have helped in a background sense. I've pre-ordered the Hasbro Black Series Din helmet for a friend's custom build. When we start getting all the unboxing in the Spring, I'll be starting a thread, and I definitely would like your insights. Same also with my own HBS Boba thread, once I can find the time to go through, address the things I've discovered since I left off, and try to sort out how to go about doing the things I need to do to get them up to my standards. The Amban, too, but that's a bit further out. *lol*

Thanks to all that pointed out inaccuracies with the actual pulse rifle. I will more than likely cancel my order at this point because it's way off. I just don't get how Hasbro can state this:

At 50.25” inches long, this is the longest Nerf blaster we’ve ever done, and doing this blaster justice starts with getting the sculpt and deco right. Designed at 1:1 scale with details inspired directly from The Mandalorian series, our team spent months in development making sure we got the look just right for Mandalorian and Nerf fans alike.

It's not 1:1 scale. They didn't get the sculpt right. They didn't get the deco right or it wouldn't be white and orange.

Looks like I will be fabricating my own.

They have to make it orange and white for regulatory reasons. They don’t expect anyone to think that aspect is accurate. Sizing is misleading though. Still keeping my order since it still looks like a fun toy.

The sound effects alone might be worth it for me. If I decide to build a more accurate version down the road, I can strip it for electronics.

I know, but don't mention it as a selling feature.

It's weird what props must be right and others that are close enough.

I will mod the nerf, make it look good, repaint, and call it nice. It will never be 100% but close enough for me. I may or may not get an accurate one if a good one is offered.

Other pieces I must have 100% accurate no matter the cost, pain, or trouble.

This is exactly how I feel! And it doesn’t always make sense to me.

Like I wanted the fieldmarshal mando blaster because the IB-94 is a very important piece for me to have right and spend the money on. The Amban? Meh.

Is anyone here planning on doing a run of metal vibro boot knives?

Next to my $700 Dooku saber is my $11 Leia Rubies blaster.
It still gets me how all-over-the-place the good stuff can come from. Rubies, of all companies, managed to almost completely nail the DDC Defender. The wire wrap was too small and the Veyron cylinder detailing was poor, but I took care of that with a barrel swap and one of the Reade Models original engine cylinders. The slide release and magazine base plate are minor enough differences one can mod or not. I'm still impressed by it.

Hasbro, like Kenner before them, are so hit-and-miss. The old Hasbro Vader lightsaber is a great base to work from. With minor sweat-equity, you can end up with something that challenges a high-end replica. Heck, even the old Kenner Stormtrooper blaster can be made to look close to movie-accurate with a few plant-on details.

I've personally always loved the challenge of getting something "enh, close" into something truly good.
