Man of Steel (Pre-release)

The theme will probably have lyrics....

(to the "Spider-Man" song)

Superman,
Superman
flyin' around fast as he can.
In the sky
bird or plane?
It's a flyin' man
I must be insane!
Oh yeah,
here comes the Superman!
:lol That's brilliant. I actually sang it aloud.

Sorry Vivek buddy, I'm very very doubtful, but let's see if the trailer is out
I understand, most are skeptical about Snyder delivering a good Superman movie, including myself. (Though I really enjoyed Watchmen and even Sucker Punch purely for its visuals).

But I don't necessarily consider that Snyder was being disrespectful in regards to the Reeve costume. The pros and cons of the costume was also debated in length in the costume thread. And though I wish they had gone with a more traditional choice of bright colors, Reeve's costume is a product of art of its time.

But as long as I live, I know there is no other incarnation of Superman that will replace the image of Christopher Reeve being Superman for me. For me and many other fans, Superman IS Christopher Reeve. Sometimes even when I read Superman comics, though the art may not resemble Reeve, in the back of my mind I am still imagining and associating the Superman character with Reeve.

He is the one who made that suit work and it worked great 30 years ago. But it certainly may not work for another actor for a modern interpretation. Of course there are many who might wear the Reeve costume and might look good for costuming at conventions. But it may not really translate well on screen for a new movie. The costume will look dated and his comment about it being from a costume shop doesn't really sound absurd nor disrespectful, cause the person wearing it can't carry and pull off that vintage appeal of the costume. It could be argued that then it should be a different actor, but I don't think any other actor will make that classic costume believable like Christopher Reeve did for a movie.

The lack of mask is also what makes a Superman costume a real challenge, not every one who wears it can make it look good even if they have a good physique.

Besides my skepticism, I am still very excited about this movie. Spider-Man is my all time favourite superhero since I was a kid and I loved reading the Spidey comics. But I still consider Superman to be the ultimate superhero and I really want the character to have the proper big screen treatment it always deserved.

Isn't THIS Photo more convincing?

Funny you're mentioning Spider-Man: I think if just the costume would be processed today with the same technique like the McGuire suit (the shaded muscle contures), it'll make a difference! See Chris Reeve did muscles with Prowes, you know that, but then the way costumes were made different.

"Superman footage goes for sombre and legend building over spectacle"

"Wasn't sold on Henry Cavill before this footage, but he really seems to sell the character without calling back to Christopher Reeve"

MAN OF STEEL footage: tone is interesting. More regal and epic than expected. Cavill looks good in the suit."

"What I liked in the trailer: Clark is always a hero, ever since he was a kid. He isn't dark, but he is finding his way."

I actually like that poster. The texture of the suit really looks like chain mail. Odd, but intriguing.

And I'm glad the reviews of the teaser are positive (though I'm not fully trusting of these). The quote "legend building" really has me interested...

I saw the footage... No one should be worried.
Yes it's legend building and batman beginsish, but it's just a teaser and doesn't represent the finished film- we can only guess from it.
that said... It was pretty amazing. The brief glimpse of the ship was almost HR Giegerish, Jor- El looked amazing. We see Clark's glasses. It was pretty amazing.
As a fan I've been very nervous as to what to expect but his quickly quelled any doubts. The only issue I foresee is if Cavil can act.. If he can do it justice

The first part of the trailer consisted of scenes of Clark Kent's childhood, intercut with the grown-up Kent walking around a snowy landscape like Alaska or someplace. The childhood glimpses included blades of grass with the Kent farmhouse in the distance, and then a rusty toy wagon on its side, a butterfly, and a swingset. Then a little kid wearing a red towel as a cape and running in a field with laundry on the line.

A Jor El voiceover says: "What if a child dreamed of being something other than what society intended? What if a child aspired to be something great?" We see the older bearded Clark, looking alienated, as he works at a fishery in the middle of nowhere, struggling with his identity.

And then there is a glimpse of a sequence when Clark is a little kid, and a schoolbus crashes into a river, falling in slow-mo. And then water is flooding inside the bus, and the kids are drowning. And Clark somehow swims up to the emergency door and saves the kids using his superpowers. A woman says in a voiceover, "My son was in the bus. He saw what Clark did."

Kevin Costner, playing Pa Kent, says "People are afraid of what they don't understand." He takes young Clark into the Kent barn with a flashlight. There is a weird dark shape in there, full of tubes and ridges — and like we said, it looks squidlike, or whale-like. "It's not from this world, Clark, and neither are you," says Pa Kent. He hands Clark a small object, like a signet ring, with the "S" shield on it.

And something squid-like lifts up into the air, a small item, levitating.

We see the older bearded Clark saying, "All these questions, like where do I come from." He looks positively grief-stricken and miserable.

Then we hear Pa Kent again: "It was left to you to decide what kind of man you want to be, Clark. Whatever that man is, good or bad, he's going to change the world." ''

And during this, Clark is going into a space in the middle of the tundra — and maybe it's the Fortress? He's wearing The Suit and looking pensive. He closes his eyes for a moment. And then he opens them — and rockets skywards, leaving a little Jetstream behind him. He soars over the clouds like a bullet, and it looks frankly incredible. The flying in this movie looks like nothing we've seen in a superhero movie.

And then there is some weird action with cars and trucks being lifted upwards as if by an anti-gravity ray.

We see a grief-stricken Jor-El (Russell Crowe), exposing the S-Shield on his chest, as if revealing a secret.

And then Clark is in a series of horrible situations — he's being buried in skulls (!) and shouting "NO!" He's on fire and apparently stark naked. He's thrown through the air and through the wall of a building, landing next to a bank vault (as in the photo we've seen.) He's handcuffed, wearing the Superman costume, and being led away by guards. And there's just a glimpse of General Zod, the movie's villain, scowling.

Oh, and Clark is holding a baby protectively, in the middle of a nightmare battle. And we also see Clark kissing Lois, and an explosion on the side of a building, as Metropolis gets trashed. There are also shots of CG blue flames going everywhere.

And Clark says, in a voiceover: "My father believed, if the world found out who I really was, they would reject me out of fear. He was convinced the world wasn't ready. What do you think?" And we see Clark walking into the Daily Planet office, past the famous globe and logo, and putting on the glasses.

There are soldiers raising machine guns to Superman — and Superman walks towards them, fearlessly. Smash to the "S" shield.

Another description...

The trailer began with an almost Tree of Life-style series of shots: grass, an overturned toy wagon, a farmhouse. We see Clark with a bag over his shoulder walking towards the wilderness (it had a First Blood feel to it). There's dialogue from Cavill's Clark Kent, Russell Crowe's Jor-El, and Kevin Costner's Pa Kent that recall the fear of human beings to what they don't understand. We see how the world would really react to a superhuman alien revealing himself to the world. There's a quick series of shots of Jor-El, Amy Adams' Lois Lane kissing Superman, and Michael Shannon's General Zod (not that Snyder would confirm that).

The stirring music was particularly effective in selling the solemnity and majesty of the piece. We see young Clark playing in his backyard with a red towel around his neck as a cape and later saving classmates in a school bus accident. We also see him finding the Kryptonian space ship in his parents' barn. We see Clark "meeting" Jor-El in the Fortress of Solitude, and even a glimpse of The Daily Planet as Clark gets into an elevator and puts on his glasses. And, obviously, some cool aerial stuff of Superman in battle, soaring through the sky and walking across the snow. There's a very Alex Ross feel to the whole thing. The trailer ends with Clark saying something along the lines of "My father always said people would reject me out of fear. What do you think?."

From what I could see with the low-res boot-leg, Nolan has his hands in it much more then Snyder (Thankfully). I can't wait to see the trailer on the big screen. Because what I could see, it looked awesome!!!! The Man of Steel may actually get the treatment he deserves!

Yeah, I saw a bootleg too, and it looks/feels potentially epic. However, trailers can be misleading... :cry

Didn't I read somewhere they were already planning a reboot. Do you think if this movie really takes off they will change their minds?.

yes, it will be rebooted due to the fact, that snyder doesnt want his version of superman to be in the justice league. or at least thats what the DC executives say. what happens in the end, remains to be seen

That Cavill suit really isn't standing out well as a favorite design of mine. I still prefer the brighter colors. Superman and Batman are two different look/feels and it just looks like they're trying to go a bit too dark of a feel on this one.

I still need to see the teaser trailer though... probably tomorrow night with Dark Knight Rises attached, huh?
