Man of Steel (Pre-release)

I never understood the rationale for a 'ripped' superman. Look at Reeve and Zod and crew. None of those guys were in Mr. Olympia form yet fullfilled the role perfectly.

I mean if you get your strength from the sun having an effect on you, I don't see it 'ripping' your physique in the process. If so, you'd have hulk-ish transformations when out of the sun too long and then returning to it.

I liked Reeve's Superman, but I visually equate strength with muscularity, & my one gripe with Reeve was that I'd wished he had been a little more bulked up.

And the comic books have ALWAYS portrayed Superman as a lot more muscular-looking than everyone else, so I'm actually hella-pleased with Cavill's physique in this roll.

That being said, your reasoning is totally logical & makes perfect sense.

P.S. Rep 1up 4 U!

Reeve was able to exude a believable strength and confidence in the role. You can put some muscle-bound clod in the role, and he may look good in the suit, but just because someone can fill the suit doesn't fill the boots.

I don't disagree with any of ^THIS^. :thumbsup

I just wish they would give a stab at the Alex Ross old and wise looking Superman.... not the pretty boy type.

I imagine its the same reason the BBC are only casting 'young' actors to play The Doctor in Dr Who nowadays, so that they can attract a new 'young' audience.

I always wanted a Ross-style Supes on the big screen. An older, more experienced Superman would have a lot more presence. But then again, you know 95% of the population would be complaining "Why is he so old?" :facepalm

Maybe they could pull off an older version of Supes on cable. It would have to be a darker, version though to pull in any audience unfortunately. Could work though. He'll, I thought it was cool seeing the older Superman on Batman Beyond back in the day.

It's a statue. I would like to see an older Superman. My problem with Ross' Superman is that he's got a gut and double-chin. Yes, I'm one of those people who doesn't want a flabby Superman.

People don't understand what 'ripped' is. Bodybuilders get ripped to show they have no fat layer between the skin and muscle. It's just for more points. They are actually a bit weaker in this state not stronger.

So why does the Hulk have that look now? I'm sure he doesn't care about appearance, and his skin is so thick it can stop missiles, so I doubt the blood vessels would bulge it out.

People think it is more powerful looking, I guess.

Never was and never will be a fan of Ross' Superman. I can't get it, why they like his concept… for me, Superman of John Byrne in the 80's, which Reeve stepped out of the pages.

I agree with 2/3 of this.

I have a strong dislike for just about anything Ross touches. The man is nothing without his models and I just don't like his style.

John Byrne's Superman is the perfect Superman for me. I think he brought a dynamic to Superman is both his writing and artworks that hasn't been touched since.

I just don't see Byrne's Supes as being Christopher Reeve at all. ...and well, that's a good thing in my eyes.

The current DCnu Superman? I find it terribly unoriginal, uninspired and well, if I was Marvel Comics I'd sue for having this new Superman a poor copy of Peter Parker and Spider-Man.

Byrne made the perfect comic Superman (outside of Siegal and Shuster - have to give credit to those who were staring at a blank page). But Reeve portrayed the ideal real life incarnation of Kal-El. Not only did he have the perfect look - but the feel he gave the character, both Supes and Clark was fantastic.

I'll just say I disagree. ...and well, I thought George Reeves gave a much better portrayal of both Superman and Clark Kent.

I'm the right age to know and appreciate Christopher Reeves, but even as a kid - I just didn't get his Superman.
