Making Back to the Future "Flame Trails"

To blatantly steal from one of your competitors.... I was flipping channels and hit some other cooking (No offense intended), but there was a guy on there doing water and ice in pulled sugar. I don't know the name of the technique, but they were mixing up a thick sugary substance that had a taffy like consistncy and then dried hard that they could pull and shape, coloring it and then hitting it with a blowtorch to give it a glassy surface. I imagine that with a little experimentation you could mix up a red/orange/yellow fade that would look like fire trails.

lol, none taken, and no worries - we all know who was on the scene first. Yeah, we do a lot of sugar work - here's the aqua "ocean" on the LOST cake which was really melted sugar:

I would actually strongly recommend staying away from anything napalm-y, whether it be dish soap or polystyrene. I learned the hard way that home improvisation books are d-a-ngerous if you don't have a chemistry background, and posts like the one on rotteneggs fall into the same category.

Be extremely careful where you use napalm, make sure to keep yourself and everybody around you out of harms way. Napalm usually causes severe 3rd degree burns as it sticks to the skin. You could experience 2nd degree burns if the quantity of napalm is really low. 2nd degree burn causes unbearably excruciating pain unlike 3rd degree burns where pain cannot be felt because napalm burns out the nerve endings. Keep safe distance from burning napalm as the combustion produces large amounts of Carbon Monoxide and Carbon Dioxide, which if inhaled can cause a person to pass out or in extreme cases die. Never use it on another human being or animal, it’s not only extremely cruel but also illegal.

I believe he's referring to the gallon sized pickle jars and the small regular sized bottles of dish soap. I would definitely stay away from that stuff, very dangerous and would melt a hole not only in the cake but probably the table below it as well if it's anywhere near as strong as the foam peanut method.

Thanks Alan - just got back to the hotel. Here's a quick clip of what we ended up doing at the reveal:

And here's a quick photo of the cake under construction - I'll put up some completed shots - complete with fire and lighting effects sometime tomorrow...

I have that licence plate from the back of the car. Needed a souvenir for my wife, she loves those cake shows!
