Mad Max Interceptor Build Project

This is kind of a return for me, again. The old timers will remember my original name, Lucasberg without the "2", but I cannot get into that account. I have tried for years.

I am building a 1:1 Mad Max "Black on Black" Interceptor with an Australian XA Fairmont that I imported from Australia. It had all of the parts on it to make it look like an XB Falcon so it fits the bill.

I have about 7 videos chronicling the build of the car. This spring it will be partially blasted and partially chemical stripped and painted in epoxy primer.

Here's the first video and you can easily find the rest from there....

YouTube - My Mad Max Interceptor Project: Part 1

The car arrived in September 2004 but I either didn't have the time or the money to work on it. Finally put it in the garage to start on it in 2006. Been hit and miss for a while but I'm making progress.

Always love to see another one of these either bound for or on the road, congratulations.
If your interested, i am thinking of selling my original Max Rob steering wheel and the most accurate replica of the fuel gauge used in the mm2 car you can find.

This is going to be fun to watch. I wish I lived closer to Ohio so I could drop in for a visit every few months to see your progress. This has been a dream of mine since I saw the sequel then searched for weeks to find a VHS copy of the original Mad Max to see what I had missed. This is going to be awesome!

Very cool project. A few years ago, I very seriously looked into getting a Falcon XB imported so I could do this as well. I even met a guy here in the Pacific Northwest who was nearly complete with his Interceptor, and offered to help me secure one for myself. It was quite impressive. Once it's lifted, that car is a lot bigger than I'd imagined.

Thanks guys.

Mr. Webber, yes, I am very interested in the Max Rob wheel. PM me with details, please.

I also have a website that tells my whole story about how I got into this, how I got the car from Australia, and the parts I have acquired to build the car. There's also info about the movie car, Aussie Falcons, and more. it is XAXB Interceptor

The site is a free site and I maxed out the available space so it is not up to date and I need to build another site to continue the info.

I also wrote a screenplay of a story involving the Interceptor. I am currently re-writing it as a novel as I take a "Script to Novel" course.

I am also shooting a short film that features my wife's custom 1966 Mustang, which I built, and a 1972 Monte Carlo SS454. That's another topic though.

I used to be a regular here long ago. I have stopped in a few times since, but now I can't access my account. The board says the username is still taken so the account is still there.

I've built a Stormtrooper E-11 with a real demilled Sterling L2A3 submachine gun. If anyone here has a hyperfirm (hard rubber) replica of a Sterling/E-11 from Sci-fire it was molded from my gun.

Lately I have put real wooden Mauser grips on my DL-44 Han Solo blaster. I have also finally finished a Luke and Vader ANH lightsabres made from a real Graflex hilt and a Heiland. I had the Graflex sitting around for years and years. I got 2 off ebay long ago when prices were still crazy.

I just remembered, I also have the music box toy that Mad Max finds and plays in Road Warrior. That's sitting next to my 1/18 scale die cast Road Warrior Interceptor

Many of the pictures and references to other Interceptors that people here have linked to are people I know. You get deep into things when building one of these cars.

Neat. I read Weiand is going to start, or has started, to remake the old blower snouts. They even advertise 'as used by Mad Max'.

They should be availabe this month. Yes, it is great news.

I machined my own swing arm that holds the tensioner pulley for the blower out of billet aluminum. It mounts to the front of the Weiand cover. I got dimensions from a friend who has an original. After I machined my own I had a small lot of them machined too. I sold some to old drag racers who had built reproductions of their old cackle cars that they raced back in the 60's. I also sold some to others building this replica. I have a couple left.

I do have an original vintage Weiand cover. I am going to use it.

When I have time I will stop back in with pictures. Gotta get to bed now. Going to scout a location for shooting a short film in 6 hours!! I work afternoons and had computer probs when I got home so I am up too late.

Are you talking about when Murray Smith was builing it or when it was being worked on for Road Warrior (Mad Max 2)?

It's nice to see madmax chimed in with his approval. lol!

This is my car 6 minutes after it arrived at my house on September 24, 2004.

Here is the correct vintage blower cover I got for my car just last year! It was polished when I got it so I had to sandblast it to make it look original, like in the movie.

Seeing it beside known cars I'm surprised how small it is. I thought it was as big as a Torino. It's just slightly bigger than the SN-95.

Yeah, it is only about 1 1/2 to 2 feet longer than my wife's 1966 Mustang.

A lot of people think it is an Aussie version of a Torino but it is not. Of the Torinos it is closest in shape to the Gran Torino, but the Gran Torino has entirely different sheet metal and a lot of contours in the panels that the Falcon doesn't have.

The Aussie XA-XB-XC Falcons were only ever built in Australia and don't share any body parts with any American car. The front bumpers are virtually identical to some of the 71 - 73 sportsroof/Mach1 Mustangs but I am told by others in the US who own these cars that they are not a direct swap. Also, the inserts in the hood scoops do not directly interchange between the Mustangs and the Aussie Falcons.

People in the US who own these cars are TOLD by others that it IS a Torino and that the owner doesn't know what kind of car they have. Even after you show these idiots the I.D. tag on the firewall that says "Was Manufactured by Ford Motor Company of Australia, Ltd." and "This Plate Is Affixed with the Approval of the Austrailan Motor Vehicle Certification Board" they think you faked it all, unable to believe you have a car from Australia, or that Australia ever made cars like these.

I've been told "Nice Javelin!" People ask me if I moved the steering wheel to the right side of the car myself. I tell them no, it was built that way.

It's funny to see people who just cannot believe they are seeing what they are looking at!!

Thanks! Glad you're enjoying it.

Here's what the car looks like with the steering wheel on the right side. Pardon the sloppy seat cover.

Here's a finished replica that belongs to a friend of mine. If you think you want to be me because of MY car, I want to be HIM.

Here's a little quick video we did of his car.
