Mad Max: Fury Road Costume Thread

Noticed your Etsy store...I have relatives in Carteret. :)

Been a long time Mad Max fan and with the new film coming out next year and with the Comic Con footage only a 2 weeks away, I figure I'd start a thread where we can discuss and identify costume pieces from Max as time comes along. I'll start with a few pictures that have been released so far...

As you can see, Tom Hardy is wearing basically the same jacket and pants as worn in Mad Max 2 and Beyond Thunderdome, more specifically the Thunderdome version as it has the same stitching simulating repair that has been done to the jacket and pants over time. From what I read doing research, is for the film, production used one of the original jackets from the last movie, borrowed from a collector and basically matched it stitch for stitch. Even though this was done for consistency for the franchise, the jacket and pants match the appearance for the events taking place in Beyond Thunderdome. Supposedly, Fury Road takes place between the first two films where the damage and repair stitching detail on the jacket and pants hasn't been done yet to this extent, so that's a mistake on the productions part.

Anyway, to continue, Max's costume for this film has a few new pieces, he's wearing some kind of long sleeve thermal shirt, a backpack with some type of shoulder rig that has some magazines and other misc items. He's also wearing a different type of leg holster from the other films, looks to be a more modern nylon version.

One item that he's wearing that was pretty easy to identify as a found item is his paracord survival bracelet.

What's pretty cool about this piece is Tom wears this in his everyday life off the set and in the real world. He's been wearing it for years and if you browse photos of him on the net you can see him wearing it. Here's a few...

Now, studying the released movie photos and the ones off set, I came to the conclusion that the color of the paracord bracelet is "foliage green" and is the 550 type paracord. Also, the style of paracord bracelet he wears is the adjustable type. If you're familiar with paracord bracelets most people make and sell them with buckles to close them or with knots and are not adjustable. The one Tom wears slips over your hand and you pull the cord to adjust. I figured out how to make my own and looking at his pictures closely, I matched the same style he wears on and off screen. Here's the one I made..

Update: You can get these now from me at my etsy store at http://www.etsy.com/shop/ORRIOLS which are 100% accurate now. You can find updated photos here http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=233109

That's all I've pretty much identified for now.

Please be sure to discuss and help identify new pieces as more photos and footage becomes available.

Comicguy can you show us more pictures of your work on the vest?
I am still collecting parts here!

I haven't touch it since my last photos I posted. I still need to order the m4 mag pouches. Picked up all the rare stuff first. Was hoping to see more photos from arlo before I continued. Arlo, where are you buddy? :D

OK, I've decided to make some slight changes to my South-Beach jacket before weathering it.

First - I ripped out all double stiched lines that are supposed to be Single stich. Of course that leaves some holes but i hope after weathering it with chems, dirt and fat they will be "filled" and dont fall into the eye that easily

Second - i cut the left arm shorter and sewed that flap on it. Interesting thing btw. on the Road Warrior Jacket that flapped is holded by one rivet -> while on fury road you can clearly see a sewing line that leaves no space for any red ribbon ^^

Third and proberbly final: - i cut away the arms and tried to re-attach them wit a hidden sewing line. - I hope the later handsewing on that line and the shoulderpad will cover up most of the holes.

I also did the first weathering thing and ripped appart the right arm-zipper as you can see on this shot

The Zipper has gone and instead of that there are 16 holes punched through there and kept with some sort of shoeband ^^

Was just 1 hour of work btw. ^^

Rivet and space are still there. It's not sewn. They just went with the Thunderdome look which didn't have the cut piece of red fabric.

Been a while since I've checked in with you all!

As a little update - so far I've made three different paracord wristbands (two prototypes and my final product), attached the two condor pistol pouches, added the two AK mags and have in my possession the two G3 mags. The undershirt is done but needs weathering. I have purchased a jacket which was the most accurate I could find within my low budget. Inbound are a pair of rubber 9mm stunt mags for the shoulder pouches, as well as my knife sheath. I'm working with a commissioner here in the UK to make me the shoulder pad.

Still got a ways to go but I'm making progress.

It's coming together good.

I think I mentioned it earlier but the AK mags do not have 7.62x39 /M43 rounds in them. They're either 5.45x39 AK 74 steel mags or a 5.56/.223 variant. In all the stills they have a much thinner profile case and bullet than the AK 47 .30 calibre round. I believe the bullet farmer is firing some AK 74's in his rampage scene.

The Bullet-Farmer carries an AKM rifle, chambered in 7.62x39. From what I have seen in the images, combined with how the mags fit into my vest, I am confident that they are in fact AKM mags in the vest. AK74 mags and the 5.56/.223 mags have considerably less of a curve to them which in my mind instantly rules them out.

Hey Everyone! So I haven't seen much on the Muzzle from Fury Road, so I decided to be creative and sculpt one to fit my face from water based clay. I've almost finished with how I would like this piece to be, but I've never actually molded and cast anything before. Anyone have any advice on what type of smooth on I should use to mold this and what material to cast it? I need it to hold it's shape, so I'd prefer some type of plastic as a casting agent. Also, since it is my first time molding, I'd like to make it easy and do it with a simple one piece pour over mold. Thanks guys!IMG_4238.JPG

Not sure what you may be try to acomplish molding that, there are garden ford you can use, or better yet go down to the local plastic store or online and buy a piece of .18" white sytrene, make a card board template, draw it down on the on styrene and cut it out, heat and shape it with a blow dryer.

By the time you mold that, then cast it, you have a solid piece, even then you will have to slush around the resin to try to get a wall thickness. Also resin may be brittle by that time and all your work only to keep breaking.

If you have some tin snips you can cut one out of aluminum or steel, just get a thin enough gauge.

Still the best bet is to search ebay or local gardening stores and fine one that looks like it.

In the long run, its a time vs money game, since this is a known found item, it easier to just buy it, create a cardstock template and make make a plastic version.

some started one in this thread

If your wanting to get crafty, try making the whole thing out of heavy weight matt board and paint it, it would light, cheap, and room for edits.

not costume related, but i'm still working on a new Gear knob for my car :D

Does Anyone have an idea wich exact Bolt cutter they used in the movie? Or maybe has a good screenshot from the whole thing?
I would like to Rebuild it with Foam, so i can hit people with it.

Hey guys, so this was discussed about 20 pages back and then dropped because the movie came out and everyone started replicating the actual battle jacket and completed look.
But I'm looking to do the Blood Bag version of Max, so I was just curious about the boots in that scene.
When he's threatening Furiosa with the unloaded shotgun and everything, his left boot is the cowboyish boot replicated from the Mel Gibson Max's costume, and the right boot is the underarmour boot right? Or is it something else?

Nux takes his jacket and Boots in the Beginning and Max got those spare boots -> why they give the Bloodbags boots anyway?

When Max losses his Boot when kicking of Slit, he keeps it and later holds it up in the air: "I got the blood bags Boot!" ^^
And thats definitevy some sort of combat Boot he's holding up. - Maybe it was Nux old Pair of Shoes they put on max so that he have a better stand on the Frontcar? - it would explain why he lost it that easiyl when it wasn't laced by max himself ^^

Later Max gets back his Boots from Nux when he was unconcous - But Nux is wearing his left boot again - Why did Max put on the Boot on Nux anyway when he just planned to get rid of him?

Later when Max get's his new Valsetz Boots he left the Old Motorcycle boots at the bulletfarmer but brough another extra right Combat Boot for Nux. At this point it makes sense that he gave him a boot now that they were all on the same team. But before everyone wanted to kill each other -> why putting them into shoes? XD

Max never wears a cowboy boot in Fury Road. When he is pointing the shotgun, he is wearing weird, zip-up Rossiter boot replicas. They were some kind of stunt boots made for Tom Hardy. You see the good, faithful Rossiter boot replicas only in shots of his legs and feet. The Underarmor boots are only in the last third of the film, after Max takes out the Bullet Farmer's ripsaw.
I have a boot gallery on my site for all of Max's boots in Fury Road. I just posted a great shot of Nux's boot sole - the remaining boot of the pair Max would have worn as his blood bag.

Done it!

Hitting people with it works absolutely perfect. ^^

The Bolt Cutter seems to be the same like in Road Warrior, just another/without colour and leather grips.
