Re: Luke on Tauntaun Stop motion replica?

Well I got to say the work being done to produce this masterpiece just goes from strength to strength. The claying up of the molds has begone & although I am no expert on this process my guy is copying every part of the making of the molds as per the original molds to ensure it is a total replica in all ways.

The plaster work should be starting at the weekend.
Its hard for me to get on line at the mo as I'm on a round the world trip so I will update when I can. I'm in Sydney today & my brain is very mashed from jet lag.

What's the clay mould underneath?

Re: Luke on Tauntaun Stop motion replica?

Hey Guy,out of curiosity...what was it decided that the figure be cast out of?Did you decide on silicone or with the industry standard foam latex?

Re: Luke on Tauntaun Stop motion replica?

Its going to be Foam latex but with a special coating that is used in animatronics to block out moisture & UV/ozone. It will help it last much longer than just regular foam latex. The silicone was proving to be too stiff on the lager parts like the thighs. We both want it to have as much movement as possible so the Foam latex route has been chosen for this reason.

This is a direct quote from the artist

"The process is pretty straightforward, it's just tedious, time-consuming work that takes a lot of patience and a steady hand. The clay walls going around the sculpture is the separation line between the mold sections and this is going to be a 3 piece mold. There will be a section for the underbelly and inside of the legs and arms and then the other 2 sections will be what is left which is what the flat walls separate, the outer two halves which include the outer body, neck, head, and tail."

The clay used is an oil based clay as with the body.

Re: Luke on Tauntaun Stop motion replica?

You'll be the first bud, don't worry. Its a long way off yet but this is one of the most time consuming parts so its onwards & upwards from here. I'm really chuffed as I'll get to meet Jim in La La land over the next few weeks.

Re: Luke on Tauntaun Stop motion replica?

Looking stunning mate!. Can't wait to see this baby finished as I,m sure you will be even more eager. If you ever get as far as New Zealand in your travels you are most welcome dude, I'll even let the Taun stay as well lol.
Lovin the updates:love

Re: Luke on Tauntaun Stop motion replica?

I had the great pleasure of meeting Jim Davidson the creator of this master piece today at his home in California.
I cant describe how amazing this beast looks in the flesh, the head detail is just incredible. It will hopefully have the first lot of plaster added for the molds in the next few days & then the ball will start rolling very quickly indeed. The molding process is very long winded for this prop but we are getting there.

Jim dont forget too send me the details on the history of your X wing hull?

Re: Luke on Tauntaun Stop motion replica?

This is absolutely wonderful!!!

One thing I never understood is how you guys can add a clay-bed/ dividing wall to a clay-sculpture without destroying the sculpt itself? :confused
How do you add the clay and remove it later on (for poring the silicone) w/o messing up the area the clay attached to?

To be honest I'm as clueless as you on this but I'm sure its down to skill & talent :confused

At last the long job of blocking up is completed, the first plaster step starts tomorrow so we are getting ever so close to the first cast, I really cant wait to see how well the latex cast comes out with the armature inside it. Once this is done the fun will really begin:cool

GOT IT, I DO NOT have sufficient skills and/or talent :lol

But you can´t be clueless, since you´re actually DOING IT and I´m really wondering how you can free the blocked areas from the CLAY dividing walls w/o messing up the CLAY sculpt :confused?

C´mon...what´s the secret? :cool

Re: Luke on Tauntaun Stop motion replica?

The original sculpt will be destroyed when they pull the plaster molds, its not going to be saved. The molds will be keyed so they fit together like legos. They'll be using some type of dental stone as your average plaster won't stand up to being baked and it will warp when curing on the sculpt.

Markus, sorry I didn't realise you thought it was me that was making this. This is a work that I have commissioned & am not making it myself. Hence the lack of knowledge on my part, but I believe that JP is very correct.

Re: Luke on Tauntaun Stop motion replica?

I'm actually curious about when they start to run the foam.As I recall Guy,the outer skin was to be your industry standard latex foam, but what is to be the core material?Or did I misunderstand and it is to be all foam latex?

Re: Luke on Tauntaun Stop motion replica?

Thanks for the clarification :thumbsup

Re: Luke on Tauntaun Stop motion replica?

Another quick update.

The first wall of plastering is done & the second starts today, it is a long process as each coat is left to dry before the next coat is added. This adds strength to the mold & also hemp is added to the later coats to add strength also. The first coat is a very thin wet coat also.

I must say, as jim is using very traditional methods with this it has a real vintage feel to it already. The patience involved is immense to get this done to the standard thats been achieved, not too long now before the first cast is done.
