I would add that I have always thought of of the prophecy as a two parter. The chosen one is to:

1. Bring balance to the force
2. Destroy the Sith

I don't think they are necessarily the same thing. Cobalt's thinking aside, I always it assumed it meant:

1. Jedi in power, no evil, imbalance.
2. Anakin and the emperor create a formidable evil.
3. All the jedi killed, but Anakin and Emperor = Obi Wan and Yoda, balance
4. Anakin kills Emperor, Destroys Sith
5. Man creates Dinosaur, whoops, wrong thread.

I won't get it into the whole, "prophecy misread, could have been" line of thinking, because it muddies everything.

A much BETTER explanation of what a "Protocol Droid" is is a droid who's knowledge base focuses on aliens and customs, offering translation services and explanations on etiquette for people of influence and power.

So again, WHY DID ANAKIN MAKE A PROTOCOL DROID TO HELP HIS MOM WITH CHORES?

I guess the answer is the protocol status is not his "type" but just his programming.

My impression was that it wasn't until the time between Ep2 and Ep3 that Threepio began doing what he was actually programmed for. I got the impression that he was mostly created to take care of things around the house, like a glorified maid, to free up his mother's time for other things.

As for C3P0: if I'm a kid that has the capabilities to build a droid, and I build one to help my mom, you KNOW that it's going to have a lot of stuff that she'll NEVER need. t's a hobby, you know? Not always useful. As if I have to tell this on a forum like this one.

I was under the impression that while Anakin 'built' 3P0, the bulk of the droid was scrap, and he just put it all back together. If a protocol droid is what you're given to work with for a chasis, logic processors, etc, then that's what you end up with (plus or minus some creative extras like storytelling mode).

Yeah. He didn't have a lathe or anything. He found scraps and stuck them together. Still an amazing accomplishment for a kid.
It's like building a race car from junk.

I guess he later did all the maintenance on his suit.

Well Leia didn't think he was her father. She thought he was happy to see her though.
