I could be wrong, but that looks like the hidden city of Gondolin ( showing my nerdiness ). Are they going back to the stories in the Silmarillion?
I pray that they don’t make a mess of it. After the Hobbit Trilogy.......... oh, brother - don’t get me started.

Hopefully the Hobbit Trilogy was lesson learned! With a budget of 425K per episode, they`d better not f"/$%*g it up:p

425K per episode is actually on the cheap side these days. It's not unheard of for effects heavy shows to cost around a million per episode and this was years ago. Granted, LotR probably won't be quite as effects heavy as something like The Expanse and Trek, but it's not exactly a sitcom and is going to require extensive custom costumes, lots of custom props, and unless they plan on shooting it using the same Unreal tech that they use on the Mandalorian, it's going to involve a lot of location shooting which is a lot more expensive than shooting on a soundstage.

Apparantly, it appears to be an image of Valinor, the two trees just about visible to the right. They really are going way, way back in Middle Earth history.
That figure of 425K per episode does sound cheap for what is supposed to be a very expensive series. I mean Amazon reputedly spend over 3 million on each episode of “Top Gear.”

I’m not sure 425k is correct. Amazon paid $465M for season 1 and is reportedly spending $1Bn on the franchise overall: Amazon’s ‘The Lord of the Rings’ to Cost $465M for Just One Season
If the $465 million for season 1 is correct, then $425K per episode, assuming a 10 episode season (to make it a nice round number), that only works out $4.25 million for all of season 1. For comparison, season 1 of Game Thrones was said to cost a grand total of 50 - 60 million dollars or 5 - 6 million per episode. Since LotR is going to be a similar sort of show, in terms of theme and probably scale, I think it's safe to say that the $425K figure is probably more like at least $4.25 million per episode.

Believe this series is set in the Second Age, so i'm guessing a lot of action takes place in Numenor

Would some actors reprises their roles? The Elfs for example ;)
Couldnt be the exact same. Different rights and likenesses contracts/copyrights/images etc. for the LOTR Jackson films versus this means it legally must look different, so dont expect the actors playing the same roles nor Rivendell or Minas Tirith etc to be identical to the LOTR films. A shame since Howe and Lee's artwork really gave Jacksons films a specific look.

Not sure the maths add up here either. If we’re at $4.25 million a episode and a 10 episode season, we’re at $42.5 million. A 20 episode season, $85million. Is the sum quoted a PR gimmick?, you know” the most expensive television series ever produced”.
It’s quite possible that because production values in television are so very high nowadays, the cost per episode is something ridiculously larger . But if you work back from the $465million, that’s $46.5million each for 10 episodes, $23.25 million each for 20 episodes.

Head-wrecking sums of money.

That is definitely Valinor, with Telperion and Laurelin in the background. That might also be Galadriel in the foreground, as a younger actress was cast to play her in the years during and after their destruction.

While I didn't think they'd ever get rights to use anything from the Sil, Christopher did pass away and the rest of the remaining family isn't nearly as hyper vigilant of the usage of their father's work, as he was. They are apparently working with production "closely".

I've been a fairly big Tolkien fan for a long time, and though the LotR trilogy had some hangups if you wanna go technical, they are the ones to beat. The casting, the design, the cinematography...it was impeccable.

And then the Hobbit came along...and while Unexpected Journey stayed pretty close to what I'd envision a live action Hobbit to be, the other two were GIANT disappointments. I even went to the premiere of Desolation...such a bad taste left in my mouth.

I'm super cautious about this endeavor. There was talks that they fired their Tolkien scholar to pay for the Game of Thrones nudity counselor...Unless we're watching the birthing of one of the species or the Hobbits being told to frolic, nude, by Tom Bombadil...that doesn't bode well.

Yep, thats Tirion, looking through the Pelori to the 2 Trees. I have a feeling this is probably a prologue/flashback image.
Since this is supposed to take place during the Second Age, I was thinking myself that this would HAVE to be some sort of flashback.
