Well, I wonder if Widmore brought Desmond to the island so that Desmond can travel back in time to the point at which Jacob and MIB arrived--maybe that's the only point in time where MIB is vulnerable, before he became a god (if in fact he was once a normal human). Desmond's ability to alter time (as opposed to just traveling through it, unable to change anything) is surely his reason for being there.
I think the structure of this last season is a big ruse. I don't think the Losties created the sideways universe by detonating Jughead--it was always there, along with myriad other universes all existing concurrently. My guess from the start of this season was that this particular sideways universe is the heaven/hell universe where our characters get their just reward/punishment based on their allegiances on the island. If you go with Locke, bad things happen in your sideways existence. If you work for Jacob, good things happen. Until you make your choice, your sideways fate is uncertain (like Ben in the episode where he had to choose, that choice determined what he did in the sideways universe--he picked 'good' and so in sideways world he helped Alex at the expense of his own interests). Likewise, Sawyer seemed perched on the edge between good and evil on the island, and so in sideways world there was a chance he was going to go for vengeance instead of asking Miles for help--how he plays the battle on the island will determine whether he has a happy ending or not. We can safely assume Hurley will be good--he's the good-est guy there is--and in sideways world he's lucky, rich, and confident. Even sideways Locke seems to have come to peace with himself, which would seem to be a fitting reward for having done good service to Jacob and the island. Meanwhile, Sayid sided with Locke on the island and was offered the typical evil/trick deal: Sayid said the only thing he wanted in the world died in his arms and he'd never see her again. Locke says 'what if I told you you could?' Sayid signs on with Locke. Too bad Locke's offer is just that--in sideways world, Nadia is alive and well and Sayid can 'see' her, but he's not with her and as a result he's miserable--welcome to hell, Sayid.
My guess is that the candidates will do battle and most all will die (which is ok for the audience because we know they're going to continue on in the sideways world), and in the end Jack will somehow be granted a glimpse into his own sideways world where he has a son that he loves, and he'll have to sacrifice his own happy ending in order to take responsibility for the island. It's a very Abraham/Isaac sacrifice, and fitting with the show's Old Testament flair.
My question (and something I thought would be resolved last night) is, of all the Oceanic Six who returned to the island on the Ajira flight, we saw how each of them got there--Jack and Kate via Eloise at the lighthouse, Hurley because Jacob visited him in the cab, Sayid because he was captured by Iliana--except for Sun. The last time we saw her back in the real world, she had seized control of her father's company, she blamed the other Oceanic Six for leaving Jin behind, and she went to meet with Widmore to discuss his intentions for the island. Suddenly she's on the plane with no explanation for how she knew it would bring her to the island. Seems to me she struck a deal with Widmore and when she comes face to face with him (I thought this would happen last night), the truth will come out--she led him back to the island. Jin will be completely betrayed by Sun's actions and the whole thing will blow up in her face--she'll be lumped in with the baddies and something bad will happen in the sideways universe--like her losing her daughter...
