Hey SofaKing, how does the finish hold up? Can you mask over it okay?

Hey R,

So far so good. But the pieces I've painted are more decorative and not handled. Also, I didn't have a reason to mask anything so I can't really help there. However, it's one of those few paints that says to buff after it dries. I can only guess that it might hold up to masking so long as you use a good primer? Dont hold me to that!

That is one of the advantages to Alclad - pretty tough once applied. Chrome has always been a problem for modeling, but I think the vacuum plating of aluminum provides the best results over any paint system (for 'model' parts, not so much for 1:1 stuff like you're doing.)

I think most (all?) chrome 'paint' finishes rely on aluminum flakes since the coloration is close. That is, flakes or 'dust' Al, where the 'flaked' products can allow for "induced planar co-orientation" (aka getting all the flakes aligned by buffing) to give a much shinier finish than is possible with granular Al particles. The toughness of the finish is then up to the paint's base compound (that which 'holds' the Al particulates.) So, something akin to, say, an epoxy base would result in a much tougher finish.

I have looked at several options for a costume build Im working on now and I got the spazstix stuff. I got both the spray paint and the airbrush versions. The only way I got a mirror like finish was to use it as directed which is specifically designed to be applied on the inside of clear plastic then backed with a black paint. Here is an example of the results.



In the end this did not work for me as I needed to chrome things on the outside for accent. We applied it to the outside of the trigger on this ray gun and as you can see, it did not turn out chrome.

You can find the Spaz Stix in the RC car department of your hobby shop. It's marketed for Lexan RC car bodies. I painted the bells on my Deluxe Eagle with Spaz Stix over Tamiya gloss black. This is from the spray can.
