Lightsaber Contests of Old (Lots of Pics)

i'll offer a piece of toast :D

i could offer a tdk two faces coin though. but how would it work with prizes? would the winner have to pay the shipping costs? or each person pay to ship their own item to the winner? either way it would work out an expensive contest. I'd be interested if all you got was the glory nevermind a prize :)

I think everyone should pay to ship their item to the winner.

That's cool! you should cast it up.!
Indeed, id love a copy of a blaster like that.

How about everyone just paypals the winner $2 bucks? That'd cover a good chunk of materials cost, and be easy and convenient for the contributors.

Well, I just signed on today, with the idea, that maybe the winner should get everyone else $ store entrees, but after reading this post, I think this is a much better idea. And, I think anyone stumbling on the contest thread would understand, that the more people who play, the bigger the prize would be.

$2. isn't much by itself, but it could add up, if we get a good number of people in on this. We could just call it an entree fee, and charge it at the start of the contest, and then at the end, the total sum could be sent to the winner. You could even have it to where there is no limit to how many sabers a person can enter as long as they pay the $2. fee for each saber, they put in.

So are we going with the dollar store idea or normal ol' saber making contest of all kinds?

i vote dollar (£) store, as everyone can join in then as it wouldnt cost a lot and wouldnt need any kind of machinery to make (unlike a machined one!). as said previously, there should be separate contests, dollar store and machine/hardware sabers

I'm thinking about it for next month. I was hoping that someone else was going to host it, so I could get in on it, but I have too much going on this month, to host or participant. Next month looks to be a little slower, so I'm think about doing one. (though I would be more then happy if someone else would like to take the ball and run with it.)

I'm think of something like. giving folks, a couple of weeks, to maybe even a month, to work on there sabers That way newbes, and late comers, will stand a chance against, the experts, that get in right off the bat, and get theirs done quickly. I'm thinking of charging $1. for each entree, with no limit on the number of entree's a person can enter . Of course the money will all go to the winner once the contest is over. I would also like to see if there are any other prizes that folks would like to offer up for the contest. I would actually like to have at least a 1rst, 2nd, and 3rd place for the contest. With the 1rst placer, getting the money, and maybe a prop prize, and 2nd, and 3rd places getting a lesser prop prize, but still something nice.

For example if there where 20 entrees , and we get 3 nice props donated. the 1rst placer, would get $20. and say a helmet. The 2nd placer, might just get a prop that's worth $15.-$20. and the 3rd placer, might get something worth around $5. - $10. (just to say they got something for there trouble.) This just an example, I have know idea what the prizes will be, or there worth just yet, as that depends on what folks are willing to donate.

I may start another thread to ask for donations, the folks offering stuff, would of course hold on to it, until after the contest, and then just ship it directly to the winner.

So, though? comments? Would you want the props (if I get any that is) to be lightsaber related, or will any props items do?

I'll let this post set for a couple days, and then if no-one else wants to do there own contest, I'll start posting, and looking for those prizes.

I've never entered before, but would love to. My vote is for found items - Dollar Store or any other store, but a price limit of $20.00 and receipts need to be used also to prove that no one went over. I'm excited so I hope this happens soon.

i think it should be only 1 entry per person to be honest, you sound like you're talking about a contest with no price limit either? i'm more interested in doing the dollar store contest, would be more of a challenge i think to make something from stuff you can buy in dollar stores.

i dont mind starting the dollar store/£ shop one going, i dont think charging for entering is the best idea either, $1 would get eaten up by paypal's fee's in no time.

i'll start a post if and when people have said what they want the rules to be (rather than starting a post then changing it).

so, the dollar store/£ shop lightsaber contest

how's this for rules?
1. can only buy supplies from dollar stores (£ shops for us in the UK) - not including paint and glue, just the parts
2. spending limit of $20 (£20) - only for parts (glue, paint can be bought on top of the limit, most of us will have paints and glues in our house anyway)
3. 2 week build time (after we have agreed a start date)
4. receipts needed as proof of purchase and photo's of the items prior to building

do we think prizes are a good idea? money doesnt seem very good as paypal will take a good chunk of it, maybe donated prizes? maybe a prize as an entry fee? whats everyones thoughts?

Well, yeah, I only forgot to mention that if I hosted it, it would be a $ store contest, with a max of probably $20. And I would try to cover the paypal fees myself, so that the winners don's loose out. I would fare rather have prizes like the days of old, but things are tight for a lot of people right now, and I really don't know what kind of prizes we will be able to get for the contest, so asking $1. per entree sound reasonable to me, so that we can have something to offer the winner if we can't get a prop prize. Also, I don't think there soul be a limit on the number of entrees per person. I think if you have 10 great ideas, and you can get them all done in the time allotted then you soul be able to enter them all.

I mean, imagine, you do have 10 ideas, and you get them all done in time, but your are only allowed to enter one of them, you pick one, and loose, you would always wonder if you would have won, if you had been able to enter one of the others. plus, those entering more then one, and paying for each of them will just help the pot, for the prize money grow.

But again, I would rather props be offered too. I just can't see anyone offering up a $300. helmet, or a full set of trooper armor like in the past. Not that I would n't love to see that kind of generosity again.

I myself, have had a very ruff year, and have had to sell off just about everything extra (prop wise) I had. I'm down to pretty much my most beloved pieces. (there are plenty of them, but they are all my most beloved.) I would have loved to been able to offer something cool from my own collection, but as I just said, I don't have anything left I'm willing to part with, and even if I did, I could use the money it would bring at sale. :(

But, hey, like I said, if you, or anyone wants to take this over, more power to you. I just want to see these kinds of contest come back again. I'm willing to host if need be, but I would be more then happy if someone else did it. :)

If there will be another contest, I’m in. I don’t think money should be a big issue.
I don’t need to buy parts to make a lightsaber, I got tons of stuff here at home to build one.

ok, as many entries as you like, but you have to pay the fee per entry. still not keen on the $1 entry fee though, we might aswell just send a cheque to paypal now lol, the sender will pay a fee to send it in the first place, then the host will pay more fees sending the prize fund out to the winner.

i dont expect a full set of armour as a prize, to be honest i'd just do it for the fun of it, i dont care if there's a prize or not

This is the RPF I missed.

Simple and fun. :thumbsup

I might even dig around my basement for some cool old parts and try one out.

can there be a rule about only using pieces bought from a dollar store for the spending limit and not the use of other items that could be found or were bought previously? This way, it would eliminate someone using "old" pieces that really makes theirs stand out and thus make it less fair.

yeah that is one of the rules i set out :)

graflex 3-cell flash unit

I'd be happy to contribute an old graflex 3-cell as part of a winning prize. It's not pristine. I was going to use it as the base for a Ranch Sabre, it's perfect for it--already rusted up around the ears, the midband is grainy and would look better with the scored silver tape, etc. Already weathered enough that I wouldn't feel worried about drilling into it or distressing it more.

It's not fancy and not a grand prize, but for someone who wants to tinker around with a real graflex, it might be fun to have as part of a winning prize.

What do you think?
