Lightsaber Contests of Old (Lots of Pics)

yeah i think that sounds good, not sure about the casting of a saber you already own though? for example, you could cast an MR saber, and paint it, and it "might" look as good as an MR (doubtful, but maybe), and you wouldnt really have put any effort in (you wouldnt have designed any part of the saber yourself). nothing wrong with casting parts to build the saber, but i think casting a piece not bought from a dollar store would kind of be cheating wouldnt it? eg. you could cast expensive parts and have them on your saber and you could still say it only cost $20 as thats all it cost to cast it. maybe casting shouldnt be allowed?

other than that it all sounds good to me :)

Well, I do think the idea of molding, and casting using items found at the $1 store, is in it's own right pretty clever, I do see your point though. It would be very close to recasting, and we know how well that goes over around here. So maybe it should instead be that you can use $1. store items to mold, and coast, but only items you yourself made.

I guess we could further narrow it down, to you can only cast things that you make from $1. store stuff, but then there wouldn't be much point in casting at all. (I.e. if you can get the part for $1. why not just buy another one, rather then spend $5. in $1. store supplies to cast that part.)

I mean, your right, not only could they recast other members stuff, or MR stuff, those that are dead set on machining there own saber for this contest could do it, and then just cast it in $1. store supplies.

I don't want to discourage replicas though. I mean, the winner, of the last $1. store contest built an outstanding replica of Vader's ROTJ saber (sorry, I guess we're supposed to call it the Luke/Vader shared stunt saber now.) I though that, that was quite bright. I saw a toy saber at the $1. store today, that would make a great grip section for a replica of Obi's EPI/II saber.

Well, I guess, they do sell clay, and other sculpting supplies, at the $1. store, that in, and of them selves, would be awful for use on a saber, but could be sculpted, and then cast, to make a very nice part. So, Ok, you can cast using $1. store stuff (and only $1. store stuff.) and whatever you cast you have to also have made from $1. store items.

(Darn, I was really wanting an accurate chocolate saber to eat. :lol)

I'll update the the above post later, after others have had a chance to chime in.

New thread started, just for hunting for prizes. I would like to keep talking about the rules, and all here. I just wanted a new clean, less cluttered thread, looking for prizes. (I thought it might bring in some of those that aren't reading this one, becasue they don't konw we are looking to do a new contest.)

Jason, should we all wait till Sunday to purchase materials or is it ok to buy before hand?

If you can hold off, I would like for everyone to wait untill Sunday.

When I originally decided to do this, a few weeks ago, I was going to just surprise everyone on November 1rst, so everyone would be finding out about it, and starting at the same time. I decided to post in this thread, and start the other prize thread, early though, because I wanted to gather prizes, and work out the rules a head of time.

I know it's hared to hold off. I was at a $1. store yesterday, and saw all sorts of cool things to make sabers from. But,you'll just have to wait a few more days. :)

Thats fine, just wanted to check before they start putting all the halloween goodies away.

So what does everyone think. Should I offer prizes, to 2nd, and 3rd place, or should it all just go to the 1rst place winner?

Oh, and we have had, enough very nice folks offer up stuff, so I'm going to wave the entree fee this year. (it was a good idea, but we ended up with way better prizes, thanks to some of our members here. :) )

What we did for the Blaster Builders Club contests was to offer prizes as what black powder shooters call "blanket prizes".

Basically, whoever wins first place gets to pick one prize of his choice from the entire lot; second place gets to pick next, etc. until the prizes are gone. This way, people can get something they might really want (or need), even if it's something smaller than "the big prize".

Just a thought :)

We do that at the Indiana prop party each year, and it works well. I'll have to think about it, but that does sound fare.

I 'member that, wish Kapowwe had lightsabers... :lol

I'm thinking about trying my hand at this but I need a clarification on a rule. I know everything must come from a "dollar store" and the total must be under $20. What if there is an item I want to use that comes from a "dollar store" that is more than $1? For example I live near a Dollar Tree store where everything is $1 but I also live near a Dollar General store where alot of things are $1 but they also have many items higher than that. Can I use an item priced higher than $1 if it still comes from a "dollar store" or does each item have a $1 limit in price?

I'm afraid places like "Family Dollar", "General Dollar", or "Dollar General" (I think those last two are the same thing but some folk flip the names. ) are out. We are talking about places like Dollar Tree where everything is $1. I know that seems a bit strict, but that's the way the old contest used to be, and i think it's an ok rule. Though I admit there used to be a lot more "Mom and Pop" .99$ back when we used to have the contest in the past.

Oh, Yeah, if the "$1. store" in your area is still called a ".99$ store" that's fine, we are not going to fuss over a cent. :)

quick question, If there is a cap on the amount that we can spend on materials say $20 and we live in the uk does that mean we can only spend £12 (rounded down)? due to currency conversion.

sorry not being pedantic, it was just a thought. I wouldn't want to cheat and spend £20 which would be $33 (rounded up).

Good question, but seems kind of obvious. It should be the same currency exchange amount.

Thats what I assumed (but you know what they say about assumptions) I just didn't want to enter and then find out I could of spent another £8. Cos lets face it the £8 could buy a whole lot of stuff to stick on to a saber:lol
