Let's talk Mandalorian Era New Republic Flight Jackets

Apologies if this has been posted already but I think some of you will find this new jacket interesting!

I always love seeing what’s new at Heroes & Villians. This is great looking mix of the Hera and Sabine jacket for daily wear.

My last 3 patches are finally on their way! I should have two of them in hand and sewn by next weekend the other is moving through customs.

I seee Carson is wearing a black version of the Hoth pilot gloves.. give or take a small detail or two.

The Hoth gloves are basically just a wielding glove (which I think was the general belief). The only similarity is that they added the comlink which was also first introduced in The Empire Strikes Back. The Carson glove along with the additional of the com link appears to be the similar or exact to the version introduced in Rogue One.

Yep, that glove type is the standard for the Rogue One pilots (X-Wing and U-Wing not sure on the Y-Wing), along with the glove type Cassian wore with his parka. Similar stitching, but a few different panels and a lighter color (grey or tan).

So I wanted to talk about what I would do is I was able to have a say in what goes on the jackets in the show. This is sort of what I am used to on Navy flight suit and/or flight jackets so it is an influence but some ideas are based on just traditional perceptions of how we think about these jackets. Below are my ideas and just my opinion. The jacket is just a generic design for the sake of placement. Although I have not been thrilled with the style of jackets they have created at this point I actually like the idea of individual designs.

Here is an example of the name plate idea I mentioned in the image above. However this one has a callsign under the name. I would probably put a small square embossed rank badge in the bottom left or top left. Also, I would love to have an emblem that represents pilots, if not something that looks like traditional wings then maybe something totally unique in the way they did badges in the NuBSG. Also, this is obviously 3D printed, I would expect better show quality if done.

Here is a blank if anyone else wants to play along.

Awww.. well that was never my intention. I just want to generate discussion and ideas.
I know, I know, choices.;) But for sake of discussion purposes, if "we" developed a "quasi-standard" I'd be up for another purchase to be somewhat dress-right-dress. One can never have too many jackets.

I was bummed not to see any flight jackets on any New Republic pilots on Ahsoka.

I would really like to see these being worn in flight too, not just while walking around.

My original thought is that they would be worn under the vest and chest box like the orange Hoth flight jacket. But the more I thought about it, the more I like it as they wear it on the show.

I dunno, it makes sense to me the way they're doing it. In 1939 "bomber" jackets were an essential part of a pilot's flying gear, but by the mid 1950s they were just in the way and persisted more as a badge d'honeur than anything practical. And while Star Wars snubfighter tactics have a distinctly World War 2 style to them, the actual kit feels more 1970s than anything else. So especially in the rather small starfighter cockpits - an X-Wing is tiny compared to a lot or real-world fighters! - I feel like the jackets would be horribly impractical. IT might have nice to see Carson wearing his whilst wandering around on the planet's surface, though.

Pilots still wear flight jackets today in flight, summer and winter weight Nomex. That is because for the most part they are safer in the event of a cockpit fire. Plus they are easier to replace when needed. It is a pain in the ass to get a replacement leather jacket especially if it is lost or stolen and you do not have a one-for-one trade in. I know I spent at least 2 years on paperwork dealing with replacing a stolen jacket. It's funny because the navy spends more money on Nomex jackets than on a leather jacket but because of the prestige of the leather jacket and they tend to get abused more often when it comes scamming the navy out of them. Also, there are more rules about what is and what is not allowed on a leather flight jacket.

But anyhow, SW is a fantasy movie and it has always relied on visual elements that strike an emotional response to the viewer instead of making sense. It's different from the sci-fi of Star Trek. I think if we start talking about what is reality and comfortable, and makes sense, we are going to start picking apart a lot of Star Wars elements.

But that's ok if they don't let them wear the jackets in flight, I'm just glad to see them out there.
