Ladies can be Iron Man too (everything but the shoulders, pg 35)

Re: Ladies can be Iron Man too (chest, abs, neck, bicep done))

This is looking really good! I've always been intimidated by pep files but you make me want to give them another chance. Go Lady Iron Man, go!

Talk about coming late to the party. This post has been going for awhile. Nice to see that girl in the Cap uniform is a true builder and not just another pretty face. Great work so far. I just finished painting a pre fab Iron Man helmet to resemble the Caps colors. Kind of an in between project while I build the Avengers Cap costume.

Side note: Natasha Stark is the Iron Woman in Marvel universe, her and Steve Rogers (Captain America) are actually married which stops the civil war from happening.

Her armor had no male or female shape to it and she was married in it.

Again great work in general, man or woman.

Oh god I remember that! She had the veil on the suit and everything, it was hysterical!! I really like your idea of painting helmets with different schemes by the way (and are you going for Iron Patriot or just Cap-Iron Man in general?), I really want to be able to crank out a few oddly painted ones for myself one day :] Oh and thank you!

You know, I have to be honest with you, I'm not sure I would ever go the pepakura route again. What you make up in prep time-- ie actually doing the pep-- you lose in symmetry, accuracy, and time finishing it.Every place that paper meets, there's an angle that has to be sanded down and has possibly warped upwards. It ends up being a LOT of work just fixing the errors that pep created! However, I can't say enough about working in foam! It's quick and dirty but it's fun as hell and most importantly things get done. I really really reccomend it. There's a member on here (can't recall the name at the moment) who makes pieces out of foam, coats them with pva until they're ridged, casts them in resin, and finishes them that way. Much prettier and easier! Thanks for the encouragement andgood luck on your projects!

I'm going for the Iron Patriot the Norman Osborn type from the Dark Avengers series. The helmet is just a pre-cursor to the actual build I want to do. The star chest piece is the main reason I want to build it. I may stick with the more blue than red color scheme, maybe blend both versions together. Thinking of a more industrial look to the shield as well with a arc center that lights up.

No progress today (first week of school) but I DID put together this little video of me working on the helmet. I really hope I can keep up and do this vlog thingy even if it means the content is a little behind where I actually am! Ladies Can Be Iron Man Too THE MOVIE!!

can't see it, the video is blocked here in germany because of the music it contains...:cry
i hate youtube! (sometimes)

Think you can remember who this is? I'd like to do this myself, but I'm afraid that gigantic pieces like the chest plate would weigh a ton and be really difficult to wear.

Awesome vid! Could "On the Laam" be back? ;)

I had absolutely no idea the maddening amount of work required for pepakura. Holy crap.

Please, in the name of Zeus's thundering butthole, get yourself an orbital sander! You'll be there weeks!

For the finer details on the helmet, an orbital sander is akin to a bull in a china shop. It's absolute overkill, and is going to do far more damage than good. I believe the trick to doing fiberglass/bondo work when you're going for detail, symmetry and smoothness is simply to apply bondo VERY conservatively. If you watch the sped up parts of the video closely, you'll see Laam practically sculpting with the stuff, leaving only little bumps and details to sand down.

Don't get me wrong, and orbital sander definitely has it's place in a builders arsenal. But for work like this, with all kinds of undercuts, sharp details, and tiny parts, it's not the right approach.

Re: Ladies can be Iron Man too (chest, abs, neck, bicep done))

Well, yes, for the detail bits (for which you might equally use any of the many variations on a dremel that exist). But for the larger, more open areas... by the time poor Laamberry is done with the file technique, she'll be 70 years old, and I'm not sure that Bandy-Legged Pensioner Iron Man is quite the look she's going for... :confused

I dunno dude, I've got an orbital sander (and have used it) and it does more bad than good, honestly. There just isn't enough bondo for it to work with and I end up with a bunch of asymmetry :/ It makes sense in theory but not so much in application. On top of that, they're too heavy for my wrists to support very well! I end up dropping it and junk. Don't get me wrong though, I appreciate the concern :]

I was actually just writing out a script for some OTL, good call :) and yeah, pep is a really obnoxious process.

Found him, it's Xrobots on here. Gorgeous work he's done <3 but i feel like rigid suits are best for display, not wearing!

Re: Ladies can be Iron Man too (chest, abs, neck, bicep done))

i agree with matt and laam, a orbital sander on this kind of piece will not do you any good. it might be a PITA to do it by hand, but the result will satisfy you more :)

I don't do any pep work with a orbital sander anymore. If you do the bondo stage right, You shouldn't have to use an orbital sander. I do all my sanding by hand.

weeell it depends on the piece you do

i did a cap america shield in pep, i wouldve loved to have any mechanical help to sand that :D i did it all by hand and it took like 2 weeks of sanding :D

Re: Ladies can be Iron Man too (chest, abs, neck, bicep done))

Yeah it's definitely highly dependent on the piece. I was able to use a random orbital sander for a lot of the rough sanding for my Gray Fox helmet but that's because there wasn't any undercuts. I still did finishing sanding by hand but having that orbital sander for a lot of the initial rough sanding definitely helped a lot.

Re: Ladies can be Iron Man too (chest, abs, neck, bicep done))

Seeing Laam using flat file on sanding the helmet really amazed me... its totally new to me... I've never thought of that technique and I think its really clever...:):thumbsup I only used a piece of plyboard (1.5"x2.5"x3/4") wrapped in sandpaper on our helm...

But on finer details, Mr. Popsicle is the best...(y)thumbsup

Keep building Laam...

cheers!

Re: Ladies can be Iron Man too (chest, abs, neck, bicep done))

Yes, the sandpaper+popsicle technique is a time tested winner for sure. on REALLY crazy parts, I will sometimes trim down a popsicle stick, and glue sandpaper onto it with contact cement. The advantage over a file is that you can select the grit that you want, and can shape it however you need.

Looks great, can't wait to see Iron Woman!
