Ladies can be Iron Man too (everything but the shoulders, pg 35)

Re: Ladies can be Iron Man too (brand new start, page 24)

You know, It's just foam. Don't be afraid to modify the part once it's built.

if the part is the right length but is too big on you in terms of "bulk"

why not cut a slit out of it and slim it down?
You can just reglue it back together in the end.

I hope you get what I mean

good luck.

I made a Thor breastplate for Halloween out of foam and tried to make alterations this way after making the main shape and had some trouble with the seams holding and the foam not matching up; is it easier if you're using wider foam? (the foam I was using for that had to be 2mm tops, I just picked up a roll of it in a craft store) Or does it more depend on the piece itself (a forearm is easier to slim down than a chestplate, etc)?

Re: Ladies can be Iron Man too (brand new start, page 24)

I admit I didn't read every post so it might have been answered, but do you have a female torso for this?

Re: Ladies can be Iron Man too (brand new start, page 24)

I hope you're able to finish it! I love that you're doing it and it looks really nice so far! It's too bad that method takes so long, it sounds very arduous!

Re: Ladies can be Iron Man too (brand new start, page 24)

That looks great! Don't worry about time, I haven't gotten anything prop related done for a year...

Hmmm, it sounds like your foam was just too thin to me. I'm no expert though.

Nahh, I'm not into the whole girl-armor thing. I have to believe that in real life nobody who does armor work would be short-sighted enough to put two big pointless boobs on their breastplate so that everything gets deflected through the middle of their chest. It isn't practical and I also like the idea of being able to put on the helmet and just be regular Iron Man. Without a girl-themed breastplate it would also look odd to change up the rest of the torso so I'll just leave it as-is. Lol this is all just opinion of course...Tony Stark would probably make it as girly as possible if we want to go there (I mean just look at Rescue).

I hope you're able to finish it! I love that you're doing it and it looks really nice so far! It's too bad that method takes so long, it sounds very arduous!

Thanks for the support, it means a lot! It's super tedious work but by the end of it you know every inch of the damn thing. It all pays off :]

Thanks! Ahhh props take up so much time, nobody can really blame us..

Looks great!
Prop projects never get done do they? LOL, I have been working on Vader since I got here and it has a long way to go.

Vader Helmets are a doozy, huh? Keep it up though, it'll be perfect one day!

Laamberry, all I can say is keep it up, don't get discouraged. Everything worth doing well will take time.

Now saying that I will say that what I've seen shows that you have the start on developing a LOT of native talent, and please keep it up.

Aww thank you so much, Mark :] that was really inspiring stuff just then, I feel all rejuvenated!

Re: Ladies can be Iron Man too (brand new start, page 24)

And now, some progress.

So my plastazote foam (6mm, medium density) FINALLY came in and I got straight to work using it all up this afternoon. I hunted down Stealth's Robo3687 foam mod and started cutting parts out like a madman. It only took an hour or so to end up with a little pile of foam pieces-- which seemed a little daunting to me.

Thankfully though all it took was some gluein' and bending to get it looking like something good.

finished, the chest looks like this.

it needs some fixing here and there but overall, I'm pretty happy with what a single afternoon's work got me!

edit** I have some broken images, they'll be fixed later

It looks very good, could I ask for a few detail photos of the inside? I'd like to see how the bends and folds mate up. I already do some work with the thick floor mat foam, but this looks like it might be a little easier to work with.

Thanks for the comments, guys!

sure, I'll take some tomorrow! I have to warn you though, it isn't super pretty. I coat the seams inside with hot glue to keep the bonds strong.

Re: Ladies can be Iron Man too (finished foam chest, page 26)

Awesome!!!! So where exactly did the templates come from? I don't recall ever seeing them anywhere.

here ya go!
honestly, it's hard to tell that it's not as clean as the outside. I tried to take some pics of angled pieces put together as well, but it just looks the same. I actually line my seams with more hot glue on the inside to keep them strong.

because my foam can form with heat so well, a lot of the template pieces can be combined to make a more accurate/smooth piece. Here's a pic of some work I did on a bicep.

ironmanprogresstemplates.jpg

drawn out on the foam. The big blob is for as piece that was too complex to trace on flat foam.
ironmanprogressdrawnout.jpg

The solution is to cut out the piece, bend it with the aid of a heat gun, THEN trace it out, cut, etc. It's a lot easier.

as you can see, this is actually six pieces. My thought was to cut it out as one, then seperate the six individual pieces so that they would match up perfectly when put back together.

honestly, the results are only -ok-. I'm really not happy with how mess the bicep ended up, I think I'm going to redo it.

anyway, thats where I stand right now!
