Kylo Ren Soft Parts.

After talking with others who are working on the costume, I've been told I'm doing this correctly! It still bothers me a bit because now I'm LOOKING for it and I can't un-see it, but as my model put it "You can't out-sew the movie's costuming department, you can't make it better than they did."

So I'll stop lollygagging and move onto pleats tonight!

... Well said, you definitely are doing a fantastic job! We can pick apart everything, but in the end, we are just barely going to be able to scratch the surface of the original designs. I'm amazed by what you have already created! Everyone on here is doing such a great job of breaking it all down. ... Keep up the great work Astralrayn!

Commenting so as to be notified of updates to this thread :D Thank you for all your research on this Guys and Girls.

Horse hair braid 50% Poly 50% Cotton. Its' almost $19.99 a yard. AHH (Bought it anyway) Outer Tunic
Inner tunic used Duck Cloth (100% cotton as recommended by 501st.) 2015-11-23_21.52.03.jpg

Sooooo on an FB group for Kylo we've came to a new stunning conclusion that the outer fabric has not just a lining layer but a separate layer under that seems to be tacked to the outer

I've been tracking down that fabric after i uncovered a 21MP shot from vanity fair

close up on the part in question:

then i finally after a tonne of searching found the correct name "Plisse"

i believe what we see here is thin fabric pressed on the weave giving an illusion that it some kind of special fabric. also seeing that it is pushed against heavy wind.

this gif show IMO a test of the costume maybe, not an edit as suggested, and or costume malfunction. gif to right shows to be outter to flap and be transparent while the under lining either unstitched flys up after giving the appearance of two robes as the 501st suggest on there approval. second gif on right shows perhaps a properly lined tunic. we can tell its different take as per hood and upper head movement and not an editing.

I don't know if I can post pictures of my progres here or if that would be unwelcomed but I'll do it anyway.

So here you can see the pleats on the sleeves but not on the rest of shirt. Also, lower parts of under tunic are sewn lover parts of pleated segments. there will be no whole undertunic from the same reason there are no plates on the shirt - comfort of wearing it. There are no zippers on the sleeves because there shouldn't be ones. The 501st CRL is somewhat... inaccurate on that matter.

Here are lower pleated segments. Oh yeah, sleeves will be shortened.

And finally, alpha version of outer tunic and hood, made out of entirely different material (to not waste target material). Oh, and improvised belt. Don't mind the helmet, I know it's... well not good.

This is an awesome thread, and you guys are all doing awesome work! You solved my pleat problem; I'm not doing a full Kylo build, but I like the look of his sleeves, so I was just going to add them to a shirt of my own!

Also, regarding the overcoat, has anyone looked at upholstery fabric? I live in LA and was in the fabric district earlier and I saw several that had a similar weave.

Oh, and tip for dying (didn't see anyone else say this): Rit isn't the best, and dying black is tough anyway. That said, the trick is to use BOILING water. Like, rolling boil on the stove. Stir it constantly to make sure everything gets evened out.

Ok, I'm going back to looking for an Obi Wan saber. Laters!

This was an awesome thread. I'm really sorry people saw fit to harass you, but I hope you can re-post your guide; it was all incredibly useful. Thanks for your help!
