Kialna's 2014 Halloween Costume Contest Entry - Smaug the Magnificent

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent

so this weekend I did some *big* things...I think.

I noticed a lack of spikes near the eyes, so I added them. I also added clay around the horn bits and got it in the mold.

I finished the toes on one foot. Next week I'll do the other. Well except the painting.

Started painting the gloves. Here's a dark wash *which is still drying*

Checking if the scalemail colour fits the fabric I used for the legs and tails. It DOES!

So yes. Tail.

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent

Ma'am, this is incredible!!! Especially considering you are throwing in such a wide variety of techniques that you all seem to have mastered! I'm highly impressed!

You mentioned a con you are making this costume for? I really would love to see this masterpiece in person! :)

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent

Several cons.

AnimeCon 2014, The Hague, the Netherlands 13-15th of june.

Elfia Arcen, The Netherlands in september

(Hopefully) london comic con in oct. England.

And I will try, maybe, to get it to the hobbit premiere, depending on where it will be. Rumours say London. I'd love Peter Jackson and Benedict Cumberbatch to see it.

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent

That is some impressive work! Would be fun if we could meet in June!!

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent

Yep. I'm competing on sunday and saturday is usually a bit of rehearsing, but not a lot. Less than an hour or so. I expect to be photographed a lot. Might walk around in the lobby most of the time. I miss Almelo, but this venue is much bigger. Which was definitely necessary.

Some fresh, new, clear eyes. In case some fail...

dcGCIn1l.jpg

We're getting closer to a colour match.

Casting the skin for the upper part of the head

65dEVGIl.jpg

Painted the skull black for drybrushing some parts.

jsO6jxKl.jpg

Skin from the mold on the skull. Unfortunately, some plaster was absorbed in the skin, but (not pictured yet) by painting it over, it seems ok.

AeBwFjFl.jpg

Some wiring

Cdjw7F0l.jpg

Some firebreathing effects that work.

zbli43Pl.jpg

The eye lights work too.

: > I am enjoying this. I'm getting to the last stages now and it's 4 weeks until the con. I hope I'll make it.

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent

Oooh this is looking amazing! I can't wait to see what else comes next, there are so many different techniques and materials at work here. (I hope you get to London!)

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent

Really impressive Kialna! So many different techniques crammed into one costume! I am sure you will finish it, and it will be bad-ass!

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent

Thanks! Suddenly it goes so fast! And oh...man. I am looking forward to wearing it SO BADLY.

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent

This is getting more and more fantastic every time I check in. A great build to follow. Looking forward to see your full costume when it's finished. :)

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent

I am going to scrap these wings. After testing they turned out not to work as well as they should. Partially because some parts weren't available in the Netherlands and not to mention the tutorial used imperial and I had to convert to metric. Which turned out not too well.

I'm going for a simpler option now, which is also more movie accurate: Add them to my arms, with two rings with a 'bone' attached to them, in which I can put my fingers and move the wings, but also be able to get out of those rings (maybe hooks even) and just let them hang from my wrist while I eat or talk.

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent

Kialna it is of a rare occasion i am lost for words but in this case i am truly gobsmacked as us Brits say. You are doing a tremendous job on this and my one wish would be to be standing somewhere as you walk by wearing it. The ikkunibated eyes are incredible. You star you.

New wings! I like these more. They're more movie accurate, more flexible and easier to transport. Not to mention the relief on my back.
