Key to Hamunaptra

Youtube Video sorry about the quality. I used a point & shoot digicam and really need to look into better lighting.

I completed the mechanism Saturday afternoon. It works consistently and reliably. I still need to clean it up, paint it and add the glyphs.

For anyone interested in a copy;
I am considering having the pieces laser cut. Nothing in the design lends itself to casting. I believe I have several laser cutters in town. I have yet to get any quotes because I need to draw up the parts sheets. Depending on the response, I may offer a kit, allowing you to do the assembly and finishing yourself. I would obviously be asking less for a kit.

I've noticed other threads as old as two and three years mentioning screen caps of the glyphs. Did anyone get anywhere with this? I watched the movie last night and am beginning to suspect there are really only two sets of glyphs and they repeat around the perimeter.

Cheers,
JM

Seriusly, that's impressive!(y)thumbsup:thumbsup

so you attach the spring with a pin to the white parts? how does the center part move?

I edited the photo to make it clearer. the brass is just a bushing to keep everything aligned. The center cylinder spins, the ends are fixed. The springs compress/ expand when the center is spun, and return to their natural state when released.

Feel free to PM me.

Great job! How is the main tab/petal piece stay closed without it springing out?
I would assume it's a magnetic catch like the original, but I don't see the same kind of catch they used on yours...

well thats freakin sweet. i was going to ask the same question as relicmaker but he beat me to it.
i think he said that hes using a magnet.

Great work. I'd be interesting pending on the price. Any new progress pics?
Again impressive work.

Tenno: Thanks! No word on price as yet. I need to draw up the parts sheet and get quotes from laser engravers/ cutters. I may offer kits as well as finished replicas. Naturally the kits will be cheaper and will ship faster. The video is from Sunday, I didn't work on it Monday . Now that the mechanism works I can look to cleaning it up.

RelicMaker & Zoin: I had planned to use magnets from the beginning and up until Sunday I thought it would work. Since the mechanism is between the inner and outer walls I had little space to work with. I even tried N50 neodymium magnets but there wasn't enough holding force. This was due to placement. If I moved the magnets inward, like the original, it would have worked just fine. One of my design criteria, however, was to hide the mechanism. I almost succeeded. I did have to make one compromise...

There is a tab inside that locks into the hinge. I still think it is possible to use magnets, perhaps weaker springs inside that specific hinge. Maybe next time. I will post more about the mechanism when I am prepared to sell kits.

JM

I like your way a lot better! It makes it more like an artifact with that type of mechanism, since I doubt the ancient egyptians were using magnets!:cool:thumbsup

Just so everyone knows I am still working on it.
My vector skills were rougher than I thought and I am using a program new to me, Inkscape.

I will be casting each engraved surface, and having the rest laser cut. The parts sheet is done. The image below was my warm up for the glyphs.

Thanks again to division6 for the scans.
