Kandy Apple Red Ironman Mark XLV (45) 3D Printed Build Thread

I feel your pain! Building is only part of the battle After its made it needs to be finished and then figure out how to assemble it! Lol I've been planning my assembly the whole time I'm building and I don't think I'm even close to a plan haha

Yeah assembly is a very difficult part of the process that nobody really talks about. It kind of falls into the same bucket as the brackets for the face plate, no two suits are identical and it requires some customization for each suit and there's a bit of a sense of keeping the secrets to themselves by the people that painstakingly figured it out. Ultimately leading to a lack of information about how people do it.

For me it's lot's of problem solving and trial and error. It's especially difficult to try and figure out a system that you can put on yourself without a helper. I'm no longer convinced that's possible, but I'm still striving for it as I'll be at SDCC next year with nobody to help put me in my suit.

Look great! I'm really eager to see (and hopefully learn) how you connect it all. I'm still very much in the design and prototype phase of my own suit, and haven't wrapped my head around how the arms, bells, and chest pieces will all be buckled together.

I know you mentioned that you were waiting to get some ABS in October, were the parts that broke printed in ABS or PLA? Or did they break in places that was thin enough it wouldn't have mattered?

I also look forward to seeing how I attach all the stuff

I do all my printing in PETG to avoid issues with warping and ensure the durability of the completed suit. When I mentioned abs I was referring to the anatomy of the suit (abdominals) not the material I was printing in :)

Man thats sick. im currently working on a modernized IM Model 04 (the classic armor) . I achieved a candy red color on eva foam with 5 layers of plastidip, 2 layers of metalic red and 2 layers of some kind of special metalic red enamel that I forgot the specific name.

Oh, lol. That's what I get for skimming the text!

I've wondered about cannibalizing a hiking backpack (the kind with the metal frame and the waist band) to act as a frame to connect everything to. It might work, but it might be too rigid and bulky for anything newer than a Mk 42.

A frame like that wouldn't fit in the mk 45 I can tell you that much. I think it's safe to assume the same for 46, 47, and 50.

Yeah I'm trying to figure out how to get the whole arm assembly to connect together lol I have 2 part shoulders too. Oh the joys

I'm planning to have the entire arm from shoulder to gloves as a single unit when I put it on. We'll see if that is possible or not soon. My concern is that once I get the first arm on I won't have the range of motion or finger dexterity to put the second arm on.

I'm thinking straps to tighten up and then tuck the tails away... Or buckles...

Don't mind me if I copy you!

Like you said, very little info about assembly after creating

Yeah the current plan is to permanently attach the glove to the forearm, clip the forearm and upper arm together, and clip the shoulder to the main harness with an elastic band that retracts back into the shoulder. We'll see how it works.

Hey!

Wondering if you have any good hand files worth sharing? I'm now in the printing game and figure it's a good way to go!

Like files of the gloves? I haven't printed the hands yet. I'm using files purchased online not my own.

I got worried about some of the scale for the suit so I got a 3D body scan.

Found some issues, I'll have one reprint but nothing too terrible. I was able to prevent one scaling issue I would have ran into later also. I didn't like a gap that was in the collar area so i modified that model and will re-print it a third time... Overall after the scaling it looks like it'll be a good fit.
