Judge Dredd 2012 is gonna rock

All blood no bite according to this review:

'Dredd' Review: This Reboot Is All Blood, No Bite - Fandango.com

"The fact that Urban’s face is almost entirely covered the entire film exacerbates the fact that Dredd never feels human. Unlike most superhero or superhero-like films, Dredd doesn’t get a backstory. He’s simply thrown into action. Without knowing a single detail about where he came from and without having any access to Urban’s facial expressions, it’s impossible to look at Dredd as a person and, therefore, also impossible to feel for him."

"With no threatening villain and a hero with the emotional range of a block of wood, all that’s really left to the film are the visuals."

-ouch.
Number 1, this is the ONLY review I've seen that takes such a view of the movie. All the other reviews I've seen are from FANS that have READ the comics, and they LOVE IT!!!

Number 2, further proof that the Fandango reviewer knows nothing about Judge Dredd is the fact that he doesn't understand WHY Dredd is never seen sans helmet. It's an essential part of the character concept. Judge Dredd IS the Law, so much so that he is the physical embodiment of Justice, and Justice is FACELESS. You'll notice that statues of the Lady Justice are always BLINDFOLDED. There's a reason for that. ;)

Wasn't it that he had no eyes or something??
Nope, he wouldn't be much good at his job in that case! ;)

The comic has only ever shown Dredd "unmasked" twice. One time he'd sustained injuries to his head and had his head wrapped up in bandages rather than wearing his helmet. The other time, he went on an undercover assignment and his face was SURGICALLY ALTERED to make him look like someone else, so you STILL didn't see his true face! :D

One of the 2 Judge Dredd figures that's been made since the Stallone movie came out may have been sculpted with no eyes, as there would have been no point having that feature sculpted in when it would be covered by the helmet visor. That could be what you're thinking of. ;)

The other figure actually DOES have a full face and a head of hair sculpted on, for no apparent reason, since the helmet is permanently glued onto his head. But someone that pried the helmet off anyway discovered the face, which really just looks like a cartoonish Sly Stallone to me, and the hair was "flesh colored" since the factory didn't bother to paint it. But still unanswered is one simple question: Why even bother?!? :confused

He did show his face during "The Dead Man" story line. But he'd been burnt and disfigured by the sisters of Death at the time.
After seeing the trailer and the clip I can't wait to see the film.

Yeah must have been disfigured around the eyes and nose area that I was thinking about..
Which would be why his head was wrapped in bandages! ;)

And boy, did it ever take a LOOOONG time to find this scan from the comic! Been using my Google Fu for MONTHS just to find this one scan! :wacko

You see what they did there? Awfully crafty, how the artist STILL only had to draw his chin! :lol

EDIT: Here's another one, clearly from a different comic. Different artist, and in full color, so this may even be from the short-lived American Judge Dredd comic published by DC Comics back in the mid '90s.

In one of the very early issues he is forced to unmask by perps:

Actually the movie costume is a lot like the early version of Dredd with the smaller pads.

OK it looks less preposterously cheap than in the early photos. However, I still dislike the bike, the costume, the contemporary vehicles, the sadly ground-hugging city itself. There was one thing I enjoyed: the cityblock with that giant shutter coming down over the face of the building. Hated Dredd's voice. But then I'm a Dredd purist - or rather a comics purist, and I have never found a comic-to-film transition ever even remotely successful. Superman did work for me because I'd never read the comic, so maybe this film will work in film terms in its own right but given its revered source material, all it can do for me is irritate.

Going through the thread, I WAS heartened to see one reviewer make mention of satire - an essential Dredd ingredient - but was disappointed to discern none in the trailer.

Empire magazine this month says that if the film is sucessful the next installment will take Dredd into the Cursed Earth (Angel Gang) with the third film of the trilogy seeing him return to fight Judge Death.

Just saw the trailer....seems like Die hard mixed with the beginning of Stallones judge dredd.

From what I've heard, the city blocks are actually bigger than the trailer makes them look.

I'm not crazy about the contemporary vehicles either, but I do like the Lawmaster. As much fun as the comic book version is, it's totally unrealistic.

I reckon give it a chance - and be there opening weekend!
